All I can say after seeing the Cubes is that I hope MANY artists will want to
put their sets on Jazzfest Live, to help us deal with the pain of FOMS.
I hope the powers that be, encourage them all to do that- and that we all support them like crazy by shopping til we drop.

since i cant stand the blues tent and can rarely squeeze into the jazz tent, it eliminates those from FOMS.
and if you want to see half the acts listed on any given day, you know before the cubes come out that it aint gonna happen. so i make a plan based on who i want to see and a feasible physical path. then i abandon the plan. day of, the w3@ther could greatly alter my plans, before, during or after it is abandoned.
usually i want to be in 10 places at the end of day on final sunday. this year its only about a half dozen. i think Amanda Shaw is talented, and i know she has been getting a lot of play on XM radio - but closing out Fais Do Do? non-foms.

Fortunately, what has mitigated the FOMS for us this year are the night shows, Crawfishfest and other shows we've taken in.

It makes it easier to so no to Sonny, Tab, the Rads, Rebirth...

Our biggest right now are:

a) the Mahaila Jackson tribute overlapping Dumpsta and Santana
b) the Marva Wright, Stevie Wonder and Clifton Cheiner tribute conflict
c) Tower of Power vrs C.J. Chenier
d) Sheryl Crow vrs Burning Spear
e) Robert Plant vrs Leo's Funk
f) Dr John vrs Cowboy Mouth
g) Santana and Nevilles vrs Keb and Derek

The first one I see is Rosie vs Paul's Rolling Revue. I didn't see Rosie last year and I'm not sure she's forgiven me. I can't miss her again. Then again Paul will have Susan Cowsill in his band. I have a month to do some soul searching.

Here's my foms(not too bad)
4/26 Astral proj vs James Cotton vs Bobby Lounge (Leaning to James Cotton)
4/27 Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint Vs Al Green
VOW vs Shamarr (will see Shamar so leaning to VOW)
5/1 Tower of Power vs CJ Chenier
5/3 Diana Krall vs Nathen & the zydeco cha chas
5/4 Santana vs Diana Reeves vs Keb Mo vs Bella Fleck (have no idea )

The one must see for me is 5/3 Ruthie Foster

I'm thinking PBS versus Kermit versus a tribute to Nat King Cole in the Jazz Tent is my biggest one at this point, but a great point was made about how night shows can lessen that problem to some degree.
Diana Krall and Steel Pulse is also a tough choice. It will definitely depend on our mood, but we have never seen Krall before -- and don't be surprised if special guests come out.
Since we saw Santana at the fest a few years back, it should free us up nicely to catch a little Rebirth and Keb Mo before seeing Bela' Fleck in just about the last place I would imagine: The Fais Do-Do Stage. It is a testament to Bela's versality -- on the banjo, no less -- that he could play music that fits any of the stages.
Two quick obervations: Interesting how Amanda Shaw has worked her way up to closing Fais Do-Do; she has earned it, based on her last two performances there. And look how far Dumpstaphunk has come, taking the main stage before Santana. Great decision here.
Overall, I really like the way the cubes are put together. Great job, Jazz Fest!

CJ Chenier vs Kirk Joseph is one of my biggest foms issues since I won't be around for the really painful decisions on 2nd Sat/Sun. Won't even allow myself to look at those.

Sure would like to see Kirk Joseph pick up a night gig while I'm there. Wonder if he'll be playing w/Anders on Frenchmen whenever? I've never seen Backyard Groove though. Da'um I wish I could figure this icon stuff out.

The cubes show the thought that went into the placements this year and I thank Festydave etal for that. For example, I love the way the Gentilly lineup flows on first friday and saturday-- a wimmens day and a rock day. I'll be at jazz and heritage on first saturday and first sunday for the most part but great job, jazzfest!
Speaking of first sunday, the jazz and heritage lineup is just soo sweeeeeet: Paul Brothers Brass, Golden Star Hunters MG Indians, Shamarr Allen, Midnite Disturbers Brass, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and the Golden Eagles, and Hot Brass!
Plus the parades start at the Jazz and Heritage Stage and we've got 4 good ones that day!
Aiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeee!!

I'm curious to see what they've done with the place. It is my understanding that this is the place that used to be the Matador, which I really liked. I read somewhere on the bored that it no longer has the cool bar in the middle. I don't recall the place ever having a balcony though, so I have no idea what the name implies. I think it did have a few steps leading to another area into which I never ventured, so perhaps they have converted the space to make it some sort of raised viewing area.

In terms of talent, I totally agree. But I would imagine the feeling is Crow's music will be a bit more upbeat, probably better known to more of the crowd, and there will a progression in pacing that way.
I absolutely love the Plant/Krauss CD, but I have no doubt most of those subtle songs will play much better in a mid-size theater than at main stage at Jazz Fest. Taken in that context, I actually think they got this right, and I am really not much of a Crow fan at all...

one year, they had Ben Harper follow Robert Randolph, based on name recognition. so RR worked the crowd into a lather, and then poor Ben didnt stand a chance.

"Raised viewing area" -Big Gulp! I think I might have it confused with another place I was in very late-night to see Skerik several years ago. It did have steps to the second floor where the music was and I believe an outside narrow balcony that was somewhat scarey. The band was set up in the center of the room if I recall but it was very late-night. I believe it actually fronted on Esplanade but the balcony overlooked Frenchmen. But did I mention it was very late night? (smiling)

If the Balcony Bar doesn't have steps, that is wonderful news. Especially two nights after Mooney at Rock n Bowl. I believe he might be the only act to get me up (and down) THOSE steps this year.

That sounds like the Dragon's Den - a great very late night joint! ;)

There's only one small step to get into BMC, and there are plenty of chairs on the floor level to see the bands - so very little steps are involved. :D

OK as only second weekend this year my FOMS list is easier to handle than in prevoius fests.
Thinking that Thursday 1st May ( my birthday) is looking at one of those great days to wonder around and take in as many stages as possible. Seeing Kermit and Bonerama at R 'n B on Friday so could start with Jonny Sketch walk over to see Topsy Chapman back for Porter Batiste Stoltz then perhaps Betty LeVette before finishing with either some of WSP or Decon John. ( At one stage WSP were on my must see list but at two and half hours that is too long).
Major FOMS Friday Art Neville vs John Butler vs Trombone Shorty. Fnish of with Stevie. Tuba Woodshed could be a good starting place.
Saturday, another wondering day starting with Liilian Boutte onto Dirty Dozen catch the dudes before FOMS, Diana Krall vs Steel Pulse but well away from all the Parrots!
Sunday, easy camp at Acura but start with Sonny then Galactic before collecting beers for return to camp.

N.B. All choices subject to change when Mrs. BD sees cubes and puts in her requested see list!!:)

Feel free to ignore these suggestions, but you might not want to miss these additions to your plan:

May 1 - Start with Jackson Travellers and check out Melody Clouds if time permits. After Bonerama, stop by David & Roselyn at the kids tent if you have time (they're as NOLA as you can get). I'd also check out the Lee Boys (Sacred Steel -- not the Campbells, but still good). If you get itching to leave WSP, you can't go wrong with Kirk Joseph or Billy Iuso.

May2 - Bluerunners would be my choice to start. Then grab a taste of 007 (rocksteady). You're right on with the Tuba Woodshed. I'd add Papa Grows Funk, Richard Thompson and Zigaboo if you're passing by. After Stevie, a quick dash to Fais Do DO for tribute to Clifton Cheneir or John Prine.

May 3 - I like Lillian, but Chappy and Feufollet have something to say too. Tribute to Max Roach sounds good if you like drums, but don't miss Ruthie Foster or Geno Delafose. Perhaps after the dudes you can walk by Michael White for a last song or two on your way to Congo or Gentilly. I'd put in a plug for Joe Krown, but that last slot is a tough one already.

May 4 - I'd make sure I saw me some Kenny Neal - such a nice and talented man. Bingo is on my schedule, but I don't see a way for you to squeeze it in. The rest of your day seems pretty set.

Looks like a great 4 days!

Weren't Mr. and Mrs. Chas. P at the Threadhead auction last year? In fact, wasn't I sitting with them? And weren't you there?!?!?

Yes! And IAC last year too :)

That wasn't us; it had to be imposters. We usually go to sleep by 9:00. :D
