Anyone going to the Bonerama, Kermit, Jon Cleary show at R 'nB on Friday 2nd May? I have just booked for me and Mrs. BD.
Share cabs from the quarter anyone? (Staying at Astor Crowne Plaza)

that's probably a good show to pre-buy for.
i cannot commit to night shows in advance on a fest night.
staying in metairie, so cant help you with the cab.

but am interested in this show, and its likely i'm there.
so assuming i'm there,
i would love to share the expense of a bowling lane for the night.
rents by the hour. bowling optional. gives you a place to dance and sit.
not sure what the rate is these days. its pricey, but if split among enough peeps, it gets affordable.

Any chance the show will sell out? I don't like to pre-order any tickets if I can help it, but I've always wanted to see a show at the Rn'B and this seems like a good one.

From their site, it looks like the lanes rent out for $18.00 an hour.

Never having been there, can you fill in some gaps?

I'm assuming you only hear the music from the lanes. I also gathered from other posts on another thread that even if you go in the hall, or wahtever, there's not always a good view anyway.

If you want to get a lane, do you reserve ahead of time? Maybe I'll try to organize a meet-up for the 26th Kermit, Sonny and Cleary.

You can hear the music fine from places other than the lanes; there is an area right in front of the band for dancing, standing, etc., but it gets crowded as the place fills up, and the lanes are a lot more fun with a group imo. I do not think you can reserve lanes ahead of time; you need to be there and put your name on a list, and they announce your name when a lane opens up. It am usually pleasantly surprised that the wait is shorter than I expect. If I remember correctly, there are also some counters that you can stand at and eat/drink in the back of the room, where the shoe rental desk, food counter and bar are.

I'm going on Sunday night to hear Tab and Sonny. Never been there before so if you don't want to bowl, is there not an area in the place for the non-bowlers? A friend purchasd our tickets so I just assumed that was to secure us a place in the concert/music area, if there is one. What can you share about that. We are looking forward to the show.

No worries, the stage faces the main room and the lanes are to the side of the main room. Without the lanes it would still be a good size club. Enjoy...

I picked up a ticket a couple of weeks ago. It's going to be a great night of music. I'm thinking of heading to Mandina's for dinner before the show; otherwise I'd love to share a cab with you and your wife.

I like the idea of sharing a lane so if anyone is interested, I'm in. More room to move around. Plus I lived in Milwaukee for a while and learned to bowl.

We always get a lane whenever we go to Rock 'N Bowl. It's nice having a central place to hang and room to dance. You can always squeeze up front by the band if you want.

Whoever gets there first, just go to the bowling counter and give them your name, then they call you when one comes free. If you are there at a pretty early time, say 7 or 8pm, you can get one pretty quickly. But even going later usually works.

It's a blast!

I ordered my tix a couple days ago and will be there with the wifey.
I'd like to get a good meal beforehand but always run into time constraints. Getting back from fest, up to hotel room, getting wifey out of hotel room (major stumbling block) and then to restaurant always poses a difficult challenge.

Put me down for 2 on the lane, plz.

We're going to that show & the Sunday show. I love R'nB!!

We're at the TH Frat House - cab sharing is always good! (our friends from LA are at the Astor as well but don't know if they're going to this show). Drop me a line - ckobrin at pacbell dot com.

That is a good sign, though. At least it is worth the wait. Although I hate the long lines when I am really hongry.

Sounds good Chas,. If there are enough takers we may be able to organise a Taxi Van to get us there and back.

It's a small enough place that you can hear the music from anywhere. It is a bowling alley - nothing soft to absorb the sound. ;) You can even hear the music in the bathrooms - they are next to the stage.

you may be able to get everyone there at the same time, but folks may want/need to bail before the end of the night. you will probably end up leaving in waves.
this is one of the few places that starts on time. 9pm.
i would guess each band to play 60-120 minutes, with 30 minute breaks.
so the last band may not end until well after 2 am.
when they used to have 4 bands, 2 upstair, 2 downstair, they often played until after 3am. i've left there as late as 4am one zydeco night.

if you pre-buy tickets and plan on arriving later, make sure this guarantees you get in and not have to wait in line for people to leave.
also, i believe they are still a smoke free venue. so i dont know how it works to go outside to get a smoke - do you have to wait in line to get back in?
i am assuming this line-up will sell out the place at some point during the evening. this creates the line.

food is edible. they have a limited, special fest menu. cheap enough.
beats going hungry. i suggest grabbing dinner on the way out of the fest that night.

renting lanes enhances the experience. you can squeeze up front for a while, then come back to the lanes and cool off. even sit for a minute.
and if you have the proper shoes, dancing on the lanes rocks.
you can see the band from some of the lanes, but its really loud up there.
i like the lanes about 2/3 back.

bring earplugs.

Me three.

I'll probably have to go twice. I can't decide between the oyster artichoke or the turtle soup. I hope they have the soft shells meuniere; otherwise I'll just have to "settle" for the catfish. (Yeah, settle my butt. I just had pizza for dinner.)

Man, I miss them too. Them were some fun times.

The food topic was a drift down Canal to Mandina's. We went last year right after they had re-opened and it was as good as ever... Which is very, VERY good my friends.

Two things not to miss at Mandina's:
Turtle Soup
Shrimp Remoulade

'Nuff said!

Mmm mmm.

The first time Joe and I went to Rock N Bowl we stumbled into one of these contests. What a great introduction to the Rock N Bowl! Those sure were big fun. We went to a couple of other years after.

Me either, he looks like a yungun in that video. I Sure miss him. Caught him at fest my virgin year (98) and he announced he was playing Rock n Bowl that nite. We had been talking about checking out that bowling alley we had heard of, so that was it. Great great memory of discovering new music and venue in New Orleans. Oh, to be a virgin again.

I am proud to say that I carried Boozoo in the chair and that I saw him throw the strike. The Rock n' Bowl will always be my favorite venue in a town where there are so many fantastic spots.
