New Orleans loves a parade! If I knew nothing else about the city, I'd love it because of that.

Is it time to go yet?

Hey, picture 5 (I think) is the face painter lady. I forget her name. Very sweet woman.

It's funny you mention this--I found one thing really strange about this parade (and the photo gallery absolutely reflects it): it was really segregated by sex. The first part of the parade was very nearly all men, then the floats came, and they were peopled almost exclusively by very young women and girls. Finally, the last group, the members of the "marching club" who were actually marching, were all men (that last part is expected). Just seemed weird to me. It's like the floats were bastions of female chastity...

I'm breaking out in a cold sweat thinking about St Joseph's Day 2 years ago when we were parading along with the Indians, everyone having a great time when suddenly we turn the corner and there are tons of cops. Driving a high speeds up onto sidewalks, taunting people, sirens blaring. Then it became a showdown of chanting vs siren, I think the chanting won. It felt almost like a National Geographics program, one guy strayed from the pack and was beaten down by cops, we stood with jaws hanging open saying stop, stop but these cops kept beating up the guy. Went to Banzai Bill's salon afterwards and could barely speak, still shocked from the experience.

Chief Tootie Montana went to city hall later, had a heart attack pleading "THIS HAS GOT TO STOP" and passed away, pleading his case for the Mardi Gras Indians.

Sorry for the story :) GREAT PHOTOS!

Yeah not sure what that's about... just tradition I suppose?? When the big floats come by with the young girls, it's time to go in and get a coctail!!

Great pics, David, and Steve, that's a beautiful pic of Big Chief Tootie. Do you know who took it?

I hope that that business with the cops has been sorted out for this year! Much as I love my wiseguy relations, ( a proud Italian-American, here,) New Orleans needs its Injun Parade Culture much more!

Well, we appreciate the compliment! The flower of young Italian maiden hood on the floats and in the marching groups is something to see as well!

Not sure who the photographer is, found the photo on a Google image search at:

Gambit had a good story (just searched and it's still online here (http://www.bestofneworleans.com/dispatch/2005-03-29/news_feat.html)).

I even get nervous when I'm in the K&B aspirin aisle as I pass St Joseph's for children. Oh wait, not K&B, that's Rite Aid

Don't apologize for that story -- it's a very important story to share!
Inside the Grandstand at JF, the last year or two, they've had a MG Indian and Backstreet Cultural Museum exhibit, and part of the exhibit was a video of Big Chief Tootie's tesimony at city hall, which includes footage of him being attended to after collapsing. His wife is crying, his tribe is chanting.

It is one of the most emotional, moving things I have ever seen.
