View Full Version : A Challenge to my fellow threadheads

Okay y'all.....

it the day after the patry tix went on sale...some are feeling bruised, some are feeling elated, and some are bewildered.

I flew to Dallas today and found that my iPod wasn't working...grrr.... because I am a moron and forgot to charge it. So, I had a lot of time to think on that cramped 4 hour flight...... I thought about lots of things - but this is an idea that I really worked on......

Here is what I know.
I'm happy that a lot of threadheads got tix. I am happy that new people may get an opportunity to join the patry.... I'm a little sad that I didn't get tix - I am on a waiting list - but it's really a great thing, on balance. Who would have ever thought that a charity based patry would sell out in seconds? Seriously? That's fantastic!!!!!! How many other 'causes' do you know that enjoy an enviable base?

To the threadhead krewe that I know is on the planning cmte - Corona, Ibjamin, 2forthefest, CBH, Swag, and anyone I don't know - which is the remaining - or those I may have included inadvertently....thanks. VERY seriously... To plan a patry of this size and complexity is HARD. It doesn't matter why you do it or how much you love it - it's hard. Many others have said it before me - but I'm adding on another thanks.

For those who didn't get tix and are angry, bruised, or otherwise hurt..... Here is what I have to say..... take that feeling that you've harbored over the last 12 hours and multiply it by 12 years. We have the "luxury" of being disappointed by not spending $65.00 - $130.00 for 10 hours of music and fun in someone's backyard. We don't worry about a roof over our heads (most), food on the plate, or a tremendous amount of violence in our lives. Mind you, I am not judging anyone. there are some threadheads who have shared some tremendously difficult and life altering experiences over the last two years, at least, on this board.

Some of you had a shit of a year last year, and not getting tix to the patry was just frosting on an otherwise crappy cake. No doubt - and I can't say anything to make that better - but I will sympathize. To do anything else would be patronizing.

However, I'd like to get on a small soap box and challenge my fellow threadheads to think about their anger, frustration and disappointment in a different light. i'm throwing down the gauntlet - as they say -

How do do some of the kids who participate in the Silence as Violence clinic feel on a daily basis? I'm not generalizing, and not stereotyping - but I'm asking all of us to consider that.... What you may have felt over the past 12 hours with respect to the patry (I'm not talking about other serious issues that may be affecting your life)....is what some of these kids feel every day. Every g*#damned day.

So - let's turn a 'negative' into a positive.... please consider this.

Why not alleviate that feeling of frustration and disappointment from someone else's life for 10 hours ? Why not offer the chance that you could actually change someone's life? Sure, call it pie in the sky, or whatever, but I really mean this....and to show you how much I mean it - I'm putting my money where my mouth is.

For everyone of you who donates the cost of the ticket you WOULD have purchased for the Patry to the Fest4Kidz event, a link to which can be found on threadheads.org - I am going to match that money to a certain level. I will e-mail Jenn with the details. I'm not kidding around and I'm not being funny. I'm hardly wealthy - but in my little pea head, I think I have a clear set of priorities - and making someone else's life better than mine is pretty freakin' near the top of my list.

please think about it.

What happens if in 10 or 15 years we hear this INCREDIBLE musician on the radio - being interviewed by WWOZ or somewhere else, who says "
I was at this place, in New Orleans, part of this organization, and one year this bizarre group of people - they just sent a bunch of us to JazzFest. Can you imagine a bunch of strangers just wanting to send a group of kids they didn't know to a festival??? "
And then that musician goes on to say something like "I grew up in New Orleans and heard about the Fest, but I couldn't go. Well, I got there and I saw so-and-so...and that just changed my life.... I knew I was going to be a horn player, or slide guitar player, or a whatever....."

Sure, you can chastise me for thinking that could be a reality - but you know what - it is....for a kid somewhere and maybe we're the ones to make that happen.

So take that temporary hurt you feel - and make it into a positive. THAT's the threadhead nation that I know................

Donate the cost of your patry tix, or some other amount, and I will match that donation to a set amount that I will e-mail to Jenn......When you make the donation, be sure to fill in your threadhead name so that Jenn will know how to tell me the total.....

Okay, I'm climbing down from my soap box....but please donate and I really am going to match y'all......

Jenn, I'm sending you a serious e-mail.... open it up - please.

Peace out Threadheads.

Michele that is a VERY generous offer!!! You obviously have a huge heart.

I was not in the number of folks trying to get tickets, so I am not affected.

But may I add that there is soo much out there folks can do to help that doesn't involve money at all. How about donating a day, or a half a day to Habitat for Humanity??... or I believe there is a volunteer link on the main page.

I think sometimes it is a easy for us to donate money to say a "party", or go sling beer at Jazz Fest and feel like we've done something good for New Orleans, but it is a lot more difficult but fulfilling to give your time and physical energy to rebuilding New Orleans.

I think Fest4Kidz is a wonderful thing, but there are indeed many other worthy causes.

Jolie, you are right. But each of us are trying to make a difference in our own ways. Some HAVE donated time and effort to Habitat and a multitude of other efforts. Some of us are a world away and do what we can to help... whether it be designing T shirts, donating to F4K or rounding up things to raffle off to benefit NOMC, etc.

The main thing is that we haven't forgotten the city. And many of us are giving back the best way we can...

Michele, I read your email before I read your post and I am completely speechless, I really am. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
The reason I got involved with SIV and Fest4Kidz is that a lot of people are building the musician's village with Habitat, many church groups give generously of their time working in the lower ninth ward, but the children are being forgotten. Their schools are not up to par, they've lost many of the school music programs, hell, they are struggling just to find teachers and supplies.
The violence and the drugs are taking our kids, one at a time and I believe one of the ways to stop it is to give kids a reason to believe in themselves and something to do besides hang on the corner. The way is through music and our rich musical cultural heritage that MUST be passed on or it will be lost.
I believe we can save New Orleans, one child at a time.

Thanks to you and all the people on this board who love New Orleans and give selflessly, over and over again of your time, your money and your hope. It's the hope we need the most.

PS, There have been 3 TH donations since you started this thread. :)

O.k., so........I've never had a dog in this fight. My sorry azz won't be in NOLA for the 'tween week" for many years to come. Gotta' wait 'till the baby souls grow up a little. BUT, I have been obsessing a little about the "dis-harmony" on the board the last 24 hours. I do know a couple of the organizers (not well, but enough to know there was NEVER any malicious intent on their parts) Plus, this is the time of year we very rarely see negative stuff on this board. And me, I'm a lover, not a fighter.......But I just thought, "Well, give it some time, everyone will feel better about it soon"....Kudos to you Orleansnj......figuring a way to make something positive out of something negative. That's the type of reaction that changes the world. SO, I'll be heading over to the link you provided and doing my part to promote peace & harmony. AND, when I see ya' at fest, I'll buy you a dink....or give you a ride in the r*&n......whichever you prefer!

Maybe I am not as articulate as some in getting my point across somethimes. I have been on the board for almost a year now and know you all give SO MUCH and in MANY WAYS and know how much everyone here LOVES New Orleans and help in any way they can.

I was only trying to point out that there are many other ways folks can help as listed on Threadhead.org page

I have managed to keep my mouth shut so far, and will go back to doing so.

Michele,
Your selfless generosity is inspiring. I remember back when many of the New Orleans schools would bring their students on the 2nd weekend thursday. It was always fun to watch and interact with the kids when ever possible. They would always draw a big crowd when they started dancing and enjoying the music.
I work with inner city kids in a similar capacity as Papafrog and I love exposing them to new experiences, museums, documentary films, ect. Things that they may not have the opportunity to do in their family life. These experiences really do make a difference and can change a kids direction in life.
Thanks for matching offer. I just sent in my contribution.

These are all really wonderful sentiments and I think this is a terrific suggestion, but Michelle has a non-functioning Ipod, and that's kind of sad in it's own right! Here's a tip or two to get that jukebox working again...

1. Make sure the hold switch is fully in the unlocked position. Toggle it back and forth to make sure.

2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

I've been faced with the horrors of a "crashed" Ipod a couple of times, and rebooting it works wonders! Good luck...

LMAO! I remember one of the early photos... there were a few kids with electric (I think) guitars, and one precious little one with a banjo or somesuch. The look on that kid's face just screamed... oh man, how come I get this dumb ol' thang and the other guys get those cool guitars! You will be a hero to one kid I'm sure. :)

ROSS...she said she forgot to charge it....

Hey all, late to the game here but just wanted to comment OnJ on your amazing offer...such a generous challenge and I know the THs will make this happen...I am off to my Brother's church today to rattle the drum for F4K so if this great and wondermous challenge from Michelle doesn't put us over the top, I am hoping the two congregations that I speak before today and tomorrow will...either way, from a future resident of New Orleans I say to all the THs who have donated and are going to donate (and those who are financially challenged and are not able to but support NOLA in other ways) THANK YOU. You have made a special place even more special. Now lets hear it for Catholic Guilt...1..2..3..YAY Catholic Guilt!

Now we will be able to:
- support the music clinic (help to pay the musicians & provide a hot meal to the kids every Tuesday
- Give a check to Shamarr to buy instruments for the kids that don't have one of their own. (Shamarr purchased instruments last session on his own)
- Buy them all F4K t-shirts to wear to fest (already ordered & on the way)
- Pay the kids for performing at a venue at the end of this session (Last session they performed at the CAC)
- Send 40 - 60 kids to fest, along with one chaparone/guardian for every two kids to fest (includes food allowance and travel/parking fees)

Any money leftover (if any) and proceeds from the raffle will go to assist the next music clinic and help F4K to grow.

PLEASE don't take this the wrong way, but I'm just wondering aloud if the FestforKids t-shirts is the best use for this cash. I realize that it will help to promote the cause, but perhaps stickers might be a better/more cost-efficient way to go? I would like to see as much of the money make its way through to the many worthy cause you've cited; I'm just not sure that the kids need to 'advertise' that they are the recipients of our charity, you know?

Sure the money could be put to another use, but the kids get a sense of belonging when they receive and wear a T shirt from a group they are participating in. It also raises awareness for the cause. Thousands of people will see theses kids walking around the fest and they may take an interest in the organization that got them there.
It also helps to keep track of the kids while they attend fest. Having them all in the same shirts helps the chaperones keep tabs on the kids and will also assist in identifying them if they do wander from the group.
We give the kids in the After school program that I teach T shirts and they wear them with pride.

The feeling of belonging to a cool group - a very important need for kids - this one instead of a gang. The kids'll wear these colors with pride, and not feel the need to wear some other "group's" colors.

Sounds silly but seriously as a YMCA Camp adminstrator the shirts will serve many functions and are well worth the investment in the end.

1)Yes they will give the kidz a sense of group identity!

2) they will also serve hugely to help chaperones keep track of em...kids are easier to spot when you don;t have to remember what they were wearing ( our groovy tie dyes can be spotted in the most crowded zoo or amusement park...) Make sure it is clear that they are supposed to wear the shirts on the Fest Trip (You can't assume they just will... really you'd be surprised !!)

3) Don't discount the mileage you can get from the "adverstising " We are always surprised at how many people comment on our Y shirts or how many kids get refered to camp cause a parent asks about it after seeing the shirt on a friend of thier child!

Is there a way for Shamarr to be reimbursed for the instruments he purchased for the kids in the program?

What actually happened (I think), Siss, is that after fest and festgiving last year two different Threadheads gave Shamarr personal checks so they could personally help out a musician. Shamarr being the stand-up guy that he is, channeled that money into buying instruments for the kids. Next week I will give him a F4K check to do the same for this session.

That Threadhead money just keeps coming around and around. :)

I have to share a funny story that Baty (the founder of SIV) shared with me last session. She said that tons of people kept telling her how hard and not worth it the music clinics would be, how hard it would be for her to raise money, how she would have to keep pounding the pavement & stay on the telephone, begging people for money. She told them,
"You don't understand, these Jazz Fest people came into the cafe one day with flyers, buttons and t-shirts and checks. I never called them, they came to me. And they kept coming and they kept giving, instruments and money and support." She said her friends don't believe her.
Now, everytime one of us is in the audience & she announces about the clinic, she thanks Fest4Kidz and the Threadheads.
Here is the press release on the SIV website:

The Youth Music Clinics, founded in January 2007, were the first ongoing program introduced by anti-violence organization SilenceIsViolence. Through the music clinics, we seek to create a nurturing, non-violent environment for young people and their families in the early evening, while offering instruction in both the artistic and the business aspects of music. The clinics are accessible forums for young people to explore the world of music and to decide if they would like to pursue long-term music education.
Each session includes an instruction period, a dinner break, and an informal jam session, during which clinic participants have the opportunity to perform with the professionals. Professional musicians, led by trumpet virtuoso and Music Director Shamarr Allen, teach fundamental techniques on a range of instruments, including but not limited to trumpet, drums, saxophone, trombone, clarinet, and guitar, as well as various stringed instruments. Basic principles of music theory also are introduced. In addition, children who participate in the weekly clinics have the opportunity to take one subsidized private lesson per week with a professional musician. Participants who attend regularly will receive free tickets to the 2008 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, courtesy of the Fest4Kidz/Threadheads program.
We invite all young New Orleanians with an interest in music, as well as parents and community supporters, to attend our Youth Music clinics as participants or as audience members.

ive been fortunate to just start working at a school

them due to Leap tests.....but he makes due for now...
i have to say these kids are really beautiful, and are a joy to work with..
we do all kinds of fun things with them....art projects, african drumming,
rap class, help them with homework...etc.....

Kudos to you for doing that - my neighbor just started this year at an RSD school and one of the things she mentioned that has been lacking is after school programs. Is it a particular group that you're with?

since the goal has been reached to send the kids to fest, its not important when the rest of the money comes in, just that it does.

That's a good idea. I haven't really discussed with them anything about fest itself and I guess it depends on what each kid wants to see, but I will sure mention it, it would be great if they came to a meet-up. :)

The cool thing about the t-shirts is that you'll be able to recognize them all over the fest.

You know, they probably won't and don't have to. The tickets they have will prolly be for 2nd weekend, but will be regular tickets and they are not "bound" to come on a certain day.
Now, everytime one of us is in the audience & she announces about the clinic, she thanks Fest4Kidz and the Threadheads.

love the description, "these Jazzfest people"

in the past few years...in fact chitown huck started a website for this
2 years ago......lots of peeps volunteered....

Chitown Huck has done a LOT and a ton of people from this board have definitely put a lot of time into New Orleans....Quite frankly - I don't think the city would be where it was today without everyone's help.

Holy CRAP y'all done good - as they say.

I was always proud to be a threadhead - but now I'm just super proud. To all of you who said such nice things about me - thanks - but the reality of the whole situation is that we did it together - and that's how it always happens.

Orleansnj & other generous TH's,
since the goal has been reached to send the kids to fest, its not important when the rest of the money comes in, just that it does.
and since all the raffle money is donated, rather than just making a contribution, buy raffle tickets and maybe win something cool - maybe even patry tickets.

Oooh, great idea!!
