CM kicks off their Rock n' Roll Mardi Gras tour tomorrow night in FL, then roll through GA, AL, SC, and NC before coming up north. Anyone going to any of these shows? We are anxious for reports on the new lineup. Will be catching them in NY on 2/2. Hope some of ya'll are going to some of the earlier shows.

I'm going to the St. Pete show Thursday night, but frankly I'm not a big CM fan--I'm going for Ivan and Dumpstaphunk.

Thanks Festaholic, I didn't realize they played last week. I thought they were starting the tour this week. What did you think of the new guitarist? Any impressions?

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know what happened with that mtv dew circut breakout thing we all voted on on the old board. Think I caught most of the shows, most of the bands s****d, and never heard any mention of Cowboy Mouth.

Amy Winette
01-16-2007, 01:05 PM
Sort of. The top bands plus some others chosen I don't know how went on to the next "round" -- they were supposed to post videos, etc., Cowboy Mouth never got one up there I don't think. Neither of the Dew Circuit break-outs went on, but even if they had it was some dumb reality show like contest where the musicians had to perform music related tasks, etc. That's my recollection anyway . . .

lol....actually, we're going because of the show..to see Ivan and Fred is the bonus :) Saw the show advertised, checked flights...super cheap...booked it when I was drunk (oops) and then called the 2fors to see if we could come down (after the fact!!!). Being such good friends that they are, they said "yes" lol. We're only going overnight....early a.m. tomorrow until 7p.m. Thursday night....Magic Kingdom tomorrow day, the show tomorrow night, Epcot Thursday and then airport for 5-ish....Short but sweet! Have to save my $$ for Mardi Gras in a few weeks :)

So long story short? I needed a Nola music fix real bad....

jazzykeb
01-16-2007, 02:36 PM
Sounds awesome! Have a blast and report back. I know about needing a fix, but relief is in sight. George Porter last week, CM 2/1 and Galactic 2/2...woo....hooo!

HA Jazzy, I was just about to email you about Galactic. Get your ticket asap. That is going to be one heck of a week-end.

Have a blast Corona. I do that all the time when I am drinking. I start checking on shows and all of a sudden we are booked on a trip. Great that you can stay with 2fors. Can't wait to hear about your trip!

Hey, I hope CM shows up for you guys. They cancelled last minute the last time they were supposed to play in Richmond. I wasn't planning on going, but I read on the web-site of the place they were supposed to play that they had cancelled. Big controversy about why. CM says the venue didn't have proper sound equipment. Venue says they obtained it hours before the show, but CM never planned to play because they were over scheduled.
Anyway, ya'll have fun. Would love to hear a report as to how they sound without Paul.

Amy Winette
01-16-2007, 03:34 PM
There was a lot of discussion about that on the CM board and the consensus opinion reached (from folks who were there, the band, etc.) is that the venue did not provide the right sound equipment. The band showed up, realized it, and left.

CM is just not the kind of band to not show up for a gig :)

csoul
01-16-2007, 03:36 PM
Interesting. All I know is what I read on the venue's web-site. Obviously they're gonna' tilt it in their favor. I was surprised when I saw it because it really didn't sound like them. Amy, have you heard them without Paul? Who'd they get to replace him?

jazzykeb
01-16-2007, 03:42 PM
csoul, they just played their first show without Paul the other night in Lauderdale. No feedback yet. Vance Degeneris (Ellen's brother) has taken his place. Waiting to hear how the band is..............

Bummer about the mixup last time.

okay kids, I'm off. Have plans tonight and may not get on again until I get back. Play nice and talk to you soon!!

Blumie
01-17-2007, 11:56 AM
I'm planning to do back-to-back nights in Boston (1/31) and NYC (2/1). I gotta say that while it's sad to see Paul go, I really don't think it will affect the performances all that much. It seemed to me that Paul recently had been marginalized; most of his material, with the notable exception of Hurricane Party, wasn't making the set lists. So as long as Paul's replacement has decent talent, the band'll be fine. (I worried about the impact of Rob's departure years ago, and now can't imagine CM without Sonia!)

jazzykeb
01-17-2007, 12:18 PM
For the most part, I agree with you Blumie. Overall, the music and the live show may not, and I hope does not, suffer. I saw Paul live solo acoustic that made me really appreciate him, as a musician and a person. So, whether being a big part of the set list or not, his "vibe" was there. That, and I appreciated that he and Fred had grown up together. You can't replace that.

We should be getting a report back from Corona tomorrow, so we shall see.

If you're interested, we can let you know where we are meeting up before the NYC show.

My hubby and I are going with some friends to see CM at HOB, NOLA on 2/17. Anyone else going? I usually can only make 1 show for Mardi Gras and it was a toss up between Ivan or Galactic. Galactic's lundi gras show is always my favorite but decided to change the pace a bit this year. I'll check out Galactic for JF instead.

OMG - I'm sure Corona will fill you in with all the details but what a great great time! Lis, thanks to you and Linda and MarySue for coming on down.
You guys made it that much more fun!

If you have the chance get to this show! Absolutely fantastic! From seeing Ivan outside having a smoke before the show to the picture booth with him and Tony during CM's set ;) to Tony Hall and Ian actually meeting up with us at a great bar after the show, to all of us squishing in the car to give them a ride back to thier hotel.

Always a friggin blast with TH's...Thanks you guys! And special thanks to Evil 1/2. ;)

If you do go to the show...tell Tony that Nate and Nance said Hi!

I'm sure Corona will chime in here but she said CM was fantastic and Vance is just great with the band :)
Yup, here's a brief rundown but man was it FUN!

Dumpstaphunk was just too fun and so nice to shake our asses to some
good hard funk again :) Tony Hall did some smokin' James Brown and man,
the crowd went nuts!!! Real, real great!

Cowboy Mouth was FANASTIC!!! Vance Degeneres is a great addition. They
were tight as hell, played WAY overtime and rocked it so hard the crowd
was insane. The place was PACKED but we had front row center for the
whole show. What a blast. No problem without Paul....
Awesome kick off to Mardi Gras. We gabbed with Fred after show, I told him that Amy and Jeff and I were coming to MG
and we'll see him there. Picked up the CM Mardi Gras long sleeve purple
tee. It's a nice one.

Got to spend some time with Ivan too :)

AFTER the bar we went to a club Latitudes which is an outside tiki club
about 4 flights up. BEAUTIFUL, packed and fun. We had the eagles nest
patio that overlooked the whole bar. Very cool. Ian Neville and Tony met
us there and hung out for the rest of the night. Too funny. Ian was
pretty tanked and cute as hell! Tony is a total doll. He is a complete sweetheart fun guy. 3:00 a.m. came,
7 of us piled into the car, we dropped Ian and Tony off at their hotel
and Mary Sue the DD drove us home. BIG BIG headache the next morning...totally worth the trip....every second of it, even the death hangover the next day :)

In response to the original question - I'll be at the SC and NC shows this week and the NYC show next week. I have already seen the band several times with Vance (both as full-on CM shows and at some acoustics) and he fits in just great! I love Paul (and I'll be hightailing it around NC in March to see him when he is here), but I can admit that the change-up has brought a different life to the band, and the shows are still as excellent as ever. I am looking forward to seeing Mary again (the last time I saw her play, I wasn't as into the band, so my memory is hazy), but I'll be psyched to see Sonia again in NYC, too.

OK - now I am all riled up and excited again! I hope to meet some of you at the next shows!

Hey JazzyKeb and other NY area CM fans-

We're having a pre-show with JTG, Sonia, and Vance. Rumor has it there is room for a few more - email Simon at simon2020202020@yahoo.com if you are interested. It is looking like it will be ~$25/person to help cover costs.

If you haven't been to a Lonesome Travelers show (as the acoustic shows are called), I highly recommend it! The band is great about sharing stories behind songs and you'll get to see a whole different side of them and their music.

If I don't see you there, look for me at the show - I'll be as close to Sonia as possible, tall, long dark hair, glasses, and probably glowing because nothing makes me happier than Cowboy Mouth (except maybe CM at Jazzfest!).

SOOOO tired!

The 3 SC/NC shows were faaaabulous, as always. We had our first JTG only preshow. It was sweet - he kept "turning" to Pauly for him to do his part, etc. But without Paul there, John has to tell some stories, so we got to hear new stories, and see John light up a bit.

The band was ON all three nights - lots of Mardi gras related songs thrown in to keep with the theme of the tour.

Pity I have to go back to work tomorrow, but I get my first NYC show in a few days. Actually, it's my first northern show. Looking forward to meeting people!

my BF is in DC, when he got to the hotel today (1/28), there was the big Cowboy Mouth SoCo bus. the band had just arrived, staying in the same hotel but not playing anywhere.
looks like their next show is in Boston on wednesday. think Fred is there to lobby congress?

abbeyrd
01-29-2007, 07:53 AM
I always wish I could just run into the bus randomly! it doesn't feel like it "counts" when I know where they are going to be!

From what I hear, the band isn't on the bus at the moment - they are enjoying a few days off at their various homes. Pity, those DC-govn't folks could use a little Cowboy Mouth style lobbying!

And Jazzykeb, of course I know Poppy! Loves me some Paul! Have you been to LT shows before? Or will this be your first?

There is a DC preshow - details are on the forum here:

http://www.cowboymouth.com/cmbin/YaBB.cgi?board=general_board;action=display;num=11 67854672

Don't even get me started about that website/forum. We used to have sections and it was nice. Then they went *poof* one day. I have been in negotiations with the manager, and he says he has the webguy working on fixing it. My next project is to get them to work on the website itself - it is very out of date these days.

Pre-Show is prob ~7pm at the bar across the street from the 930 club. Contact "Pastor Randy" (his name is Dennis) and he can get you the full info. Mention "Jen" or "abbeyrd" and he'll show you some love. :)

Hmm, well maybe YOUR reputation preceded you MD? Hahahaha, I'm just kidding of course ;) I think you should go to the DC show and the pre-show! And report back on how it is.

Awhile ago they said something on myspace about organizing the west coast leg of the CM/Dumpstaphunk tour but I haven't heard anything more. I'm sure they want to get back to San Fran!!

Blumie
01-29-2007, 02:40 PM
Just curious: what do you guys think about inviting Newbies to a pre-show. On the one hand, I feel like one's first explosure to CM should be the REAL thing in all its glory. On the other hand, what an incredible contrast it must be to see a pre-show, form an opinion about the band, and THEN see the real thing.

What do people think?

Amy Winette
01-29-2007, 02:59 PM
Wow, that's a tough question! I feel like I would want to experience the SHOW first then gain an appreciation for the band members and see another side in a pre-show, but on the other hand if both were going on at the same time I wouldn't want to leave my newbies out of a pre-show if they were interested in going!

abbeyrd
01-29-2007, 05:04 PM
If I had it my way this time around, my newbies would not be going to the preshow. But since this trip to NYC is to see them, I can hardly show up and then ditch them a few hours later. ;) This isn't a selfish thing - it is that I really think they need to see the CM thing and then get to step back and see the acoustic thing. Because, when it comes down to it, the first impression the average virgin has at a CM show is of Fred more than anything else. At the acoustics, you get the other members (and sometimes Fred).

I brought a mixed group of virgins and people who had seen CM before to a preshow first in March last year, and I really think that when people see the acoustic first, they almost don't like the CM show as much after (at least from my group) because the intimacy of the preshow is so wonderful, and as amazing as a CM show is, it isn't intimate!

Of course, I may be thinking about this too much in the context of my current group of virgins and my concerns that they are going to be overwhelmed by the CM experience. As much as I have tried to help them understand, they don't quite "get it" yet.

A related question - give the virgins a mix CD or bring 'em totally blind?

Jen :)

Blumie
01-29-2007, 05:42 PM

The name is a bit of a carryover now, but the preshows are called Lonesome Travelers, or LT, shows. In the past, the LT's were John Thomas Griffith and Paul Sanchez. We have gotten to the point where pretty much any acoustic show before a CM show is referred to lovingly as an LT show. Occasionally the term living room show will be otssed around, too, as many of these are heldin living rooms!

Some of us who have the hookup will often contact one or more band members and set up an acoustic set for before the CM show. They are often advertised on the CM forum on their website. I can work on getting the info over here now, too. :)

They are ABSOLUTELY worth every penny if there is a fee (that varies with the host and their ability to cover costs). You get time with band members, to hear stories behind songs, and you always get to hear stuff that you will never hear at a CM show. These are wonderful, funny, intimate gatherings and they really aren't to be missed.

To put it another way, after my first LT show, all I could think was, this is what I want at my wedding (note - no ring on my finger or man to speak of yet! ). It is just the best vibe.

:)

saw the show in a.c. last night.... great night! it was my first cowboy mouth and gotta say they were very entertaining. they reminded me of summer time here at the shore... good rockin' band... sing alongs... band getting the crowd pumped and involved in every song... they make for a very fun show!

gotta be honest though... we went to see dumpstaphunk. wow!!! although they were the opener (think it should have been the other way around) they rocked the place!!! these guys can throw down the FUNK!!! this was our 4th or 5th time seeing these guys (first outside new orleans) and they always impress the sh*t out of me! they opened with the theme from soprano's... fortunate son... some james brown... be mice elf again... just some deep thumpin' new orleans funk! if you haven't seen these guys... go!!!! if you have.... go again!!!!

oh, the venue was very cool as well.... a smaller room at HOB in a.c... i guess similar to the parish in neew orleans (don't know for sure... never been there.) a funky room with couches and low ceilings, very cool atmosphere for a funk throw down!

Well, CM was fabulous, as always. Although, you know you've been to too many shows (4 in 8 days, but that's probably it until the Fest) when you're listening to an album, and instead of expecting the next song to be the album track, you expect it to be the next song from the setlist.

The pre-show was great (Nice to meet you JazzyKeb and Blumie!) - my friend now has a girl-crush on Sonia. :) It's always interesting to see the different vibes at different shows. This one was much more mellow than some of the shows I have been to down here.

As for Dumpstaphunk - they are, indeed, awesome, but I maintain that CM just can't be an opening band. I know they have been one in the past (and occasionally still are), but they just ramp up and use up the crowd too much. I can't imagine trying to follow them!

OK guys, how was the show at B.B's last night? The sound at the Boston show sucked. And although I do not in general care for B.B. King's, the sound was great and the band rocked (as if there were any doubt).

Blumie, i agree witcha on the sound at the Boston show-really disappointed that the sound wasnt better
AC gotta agree-thought Dumpstafunk should have headlined-even though the crowd was predominently CM fans
Shame that the Band was not there at the end of the show as they said they would be (I am pretty sure it was per the Middle East Management's though that was at the root of that)
Corona and Nance-Said hi to Tony for y'all and he laughed and said y'all are crazy

That Tony Hall-led James Brown medley at BBs was beyond words. They absolutely nailed it.

Dumpstaphunk did totally rip it. They were great. I definitely want to catch them again, soon. As far as headlining goes, well, lets just agree that it is doubtful that those two bands will be paired together again. I don't see either one as an opening act.

Great meeting you abbeyrd and blumie. The preshow was great! I too am now a member of the Sonia crush club. I'm only sorry I let that jerk up front get to me at the end of the CM show.

Anyway, it was an amazing weekend of music.
