To get back on topic: if you like adventuresome music, you are in luck because the great Dutch trombonist Wolter Wierbos will be town for his first visit. He will playing Wednesday March we at the Blue Nile, 532 Frenchmen Street UPSTAIRS (part of the Open Ear Series--No Cover!) at 9:30 PM with local trombone greats Rick Trolsen, Jeff Albert, "Big" Sam Williams, and Mark McGrain. On Thursday March 13 Wierbos will be at the Saturn Bar (3067 St. Claude Ave. 10:30 PM) in an all-star (all-ego?) group of David Torkanowsky, keyboards; James Singleton, bass; Dave Capello, drums; and Justin Peake, "programmed software environments." It should be interesting to hear Tork in a freer environment than his norm, but his anarchic spirit should be right up the alley of the Dutchman. I trust most are familiar with Singleton. Dave Capello is one of the most amazing free drummers I ever heard (he cut his teeth with ex-Ornette guitarist Bern Nix in a trio with Downtown bass god William Parker.) Yes, there is far more going on in New Orleans than always "in the pocket" groove jams.
