I know that there are several runners on this board and I was wondering what are some of your favorite songs to run to? I am in need of some new songs for my IPOD.

When I run I wear my 30-gig iPod that I have filled to the max with almost 5,000 tunes. I've often thought about making running-specific playlists, but I don't know in advance what my mood is going to be on any particular morning, so on most days I simply do what I do most of the time and have it shuffle randomly through all of my songs, and I simply skip a song if it doesn't strike me at the moment. Some days I run well to long, instrumental, funk and jazz (especially Stanton Moore/Galactic); other days I need to skip it when it comes up because it's not what I want to hear. If I am on a craze for a particular artist--like I have been for Wilco since seeing them again a few weeks ago--I shuffle all the songs from that artist.

That said, there are some artists and songs that come to mind as ones that always provide a little extra kick: "Sew, Sew, Sew" from Big Chief Monk; anything from the Wild Magnolia's Life Is A Carnival; any of literally hundreds of rocking Rolling Stones songs; most of the songs from Eric Lindell's Change in the Weather; any funky brass from Rebirth, New Birth, Soul Rebels, Forgotten Souls or Dirty Dozen (especially Medicated Magic); long jams from the Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia or Phish (these are particularly great because I often get so lost in the tune that I've gone a few more miles without realizing it); James Brown (anything); Greyboy Allstars; Lettuce; kickin' zydeco from Chris Ardoin/Double Clutchin, Keith Frank, Beau Jocque; and most songs from Pavement.

Ok, that's what comes to mind without too much thinking. Happy runs.

I'm prolly gonna get dogged for this, but I listen to Madonna, Metallica, Cowboy Mouth, Tiesto, lotsa 80's dance/techno stuff Opus III, New Order, The Cult REALLY LOUD!!! I need real high-energy music... I tried some of my more recent favorites DMB, Wilco, local stuff, but it just doesn't do it for me.

I need to work on creating a playlist specifically for running though as I am constantly fiddling with my IPOD when I'm running

Yea, I really do love to run to that one and also Running down a dream from Tom Petty. Also, really like the long guitar segment from Freebird. Those are just a few of my favorites.

I really appreciate everyones suggestions so that I can add some new stuff to my library.

Jolie...you are right about the Cult...great workout/running music.

I've also found that the repetitive and pulsing rhythms of really bad Porno Jazz are quite helpful during a strenuous activity. I think I have a compilation around here somewhere...

I tried to copy and paste my playlist from my last run but Itunes wouldn't let me. It was something like..........Bertha, Real Real Gone (Van), Sparkplug (Rad's), Home (Marc Broussard), Born To Run (a live version), White Wedding (billy Idol), Ecstasy (Rusted Root), You Dont Treat Me No Good No More (Sonia Dada), Taught To Be Proud (Tea Leaf), I Run For Life (Melissa Etheridge) (and I cry every time), Change In The Weather (Eric Lindell), Soulshine (Franti), Mary (Grace Potter), Running Down a Dream (Petty),Poker (OAR), and I cooled down to Marc Cohns new song Listening To Levon and then My Own Two Hands (Ben Harper). Ended feeling like a million and with a big smile. Eclectic I guess, but a most excellent set for me!:D

Anders: Ho-Di-Ko-Di-Ya-La-Ma-La
Beatles: Helter Skelter
BMW: One Drop
BMW: Real Situation
BMW: Babylon System
Bonerama: I'm Tellin' Ya
Clash: SPanish Bombs
Clash: Jimmy Jazz
Dead: Promised Land (Live)
Dead: Mississippi Half-Step (Live)
Jimmy Cliff: Wonderful World, Beautiful People (Live)
Jimmy Cliff: Struggling Man (Live)
Tosh/Jagger: Walk and Don't Look Back
Stones: Loving Cup
Stones: Dead Flowers
Stevie: Sir Duke
Who: I Can't Explain (Leeds)

Right Now - Van Halen

Running On Empty - Jackson Browne
(I'm A) Road Runner - Junior Walker & The All Stars
Runnin' Around - The B-52's

Runnin' Shoes - The Fabulous Thunderbirds
The Long Run - Eagles
Running Away - Hoobastank

Long Way From Home - The Vaughan Brothers
(I'm A) Road Runner - Fleetwood Mac

I probably love music more than I love running(pretty amazing as I've run 50+ marathons). I love listening it before my run, but not during. I find an ipod too distracting and prefer to zone out and focus on how I run. It's also a lot safer to do. Enjoy!

That's fantastic. I made a "Running" themed playlist with all songs with "Run" in it too when I did a half marathon last year but didn't listen to it till the event so it was really fun. But I cheated on the "run" theme and had "Feets Don't Fail Me Now" by Little Feat to set to play around mile 10. It made me laugh.

i liked reading everything everyone wrote- i am an avid runner generally getting 25-30 miles in each week and at least one marathon a year. i have a nano and i spend a lot of time putting together playlists for this. plus there has been a lot of research on this subject as well so you may find some out there. if you know your pace then you can put songs in at milestones that are proven motivators (like at mile 4 or 5) when i do marathons i have songs by dropkick murphy's (irish punk) play every hour on the hour so i know how i am pacing. for the other songs i go through phases of listening to techno, reggae, punk and like liz some trance. i have found that a mix of several playlists is best and each one should have some of your most beloved songs on it. i start every long run the same way with an agent orange song called this is all i need. i also need to have different playlists so i don't get tired of the music. once you get a few good playlists i suggest taking notice to which ones really get you going or lift you up. for me a lot of songs go by and i don't really notice what i was listening to but when i want to stop running and a song gets me to refocus then its worth keeping in the mix for a long time.

I think you have at least some company with that group of music....I have lots of CM, some Metallica, some great live DMB and some new school hip-hop...also rocking some tasty live Dead and some Miles and trane that give me a chance to cruise on some of my longer runs....I try to time it so Born to Run is my last song but sometimes either the playlist or the body fail to cooperate ;)
After reading some of these lists, I have some additions to make to my Ipod for sure

Is there one in New Orleans? I just googled it and it looks like it's in Monterey. As nice as that is--and much better running weather--that would be a bit difficult for me to pull off from New Orleans. But I would at least consider running on Sunday in New Orleans if it was early enough.

My run today reaffirmed my preference for the random shuffle through all of my music rather than setting a playlist. The surprise of the random selection is a kick in itself for me, and I like not knowing what's coming next. Today I heard some great MG5 from the 2006 Howlin' Wolf show, which sustained me for a few miles, and also some great Van tunes, Allman Brothers (another band that's always good for my runs), The Clash (yet another), Paul McCartney and Wings, Rickie Lee Jones, Neko Case, Miles Davis with Quincy Jones, and some others I can't recall. The point is--it was totally random, and it was all good; I didn't need to skip a tune.

I mostly run to stirring classical music. Examples:

Grand March from Aida
Ride of the Valkries
Sabre Dance
Trumpet Voluntary
The Toreadors From "Carmen"
And, etc.

a'course, you gotta like this stuff.

Give it a try.

Since I recently got the "Brit Box" collection of 90s Brit pop from Rhino, my running Ipod has this strange mix of NOLA and Manchester:

"Ain't No Use" - Meters
"Live Forever" - Oasis
"Mo Hippa" - Jon Cleary
"Alright" - Cast
"Bald Head" - Fess
"Mulder and Scully" - Catatonia
"Scarlet Begonias" - Dead (Live in '77)
"Lucky Man" - Verve
"Bayou Betty" - Bonerama
"White Man in HP" - Clash
"Pesske" - Will Bernard
"Comin' Down" - Anders Osborne
"Tracy Jacks" - Blur
"Change/Reform" - Funky Meters
"Alright" - Supergrass
"Pine Leaf Boogie" - Pine Leaf Boys
"Someday" - Kermit Ruffins (always like to end on this one or John Boutte's "Why" from the NOSC album - final kick!)

That "Run Forrest Run" sounds fun Sunday morning, but I had such an unbelievable experience at the Ed Bradley memorial at St. Augustine's last year that I think I'll keep that open again.

I have Weir's version with Ratdog of Desolation Row on mine. I had Low Spark and still use it for long late afternoon runs, very fitting.

I'm lovin this thread...I was just thinking today during my run that I needed some new additions to my IPOD.

I'm logging in about 25 miles per week right now, but trying to step it up in a major way!

Here are a few that get me into the zone ( it's kinda all over the place):

Boomtown- Greg Brown
Burning Love- Elvis
Come Running- Van the Man
Mr Jones- Counting Crows
Cracklin Rosie-Neil D
Dancing in the Dark- Da Boss
Driving my Life Away- Eddie Rabbit
Finally- Ce Ce Peniston
Free man in Paris- joni Mitchell
Give it to me Baby- Rick James
Got my mind set on you- Georgie H
I still haven't found what I'm looking for- U2
Kodachrome- Paul Simon
Can't get you outta my head- Kylie Minougue
Me & Julio down by the Schoolyard- Paul S.
New Speedway Boogie- Dead
Ophelia & Cripple Creek- The band
PYT- Michael Jackson
Paradise City- GNR
Polk Salad Annie -Elvis live
Pride & joy - SRV
Rock & Roll never forgets- Bob Segar
Squeeze Box- Who
Do I Do- Stevie Wonder
Devil went down to Georgia- CDB
The Rent Sountrack- the fast songs

BUT MY ALL TIME FAVORITE, GO-TO playlist when I need that extra push...
Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass! Mexican Shuffle, Tijuana Taxi, Spanish Flea....hell yeah! Try it...I promise it's the best!

I also have a running playlist, and I've gotten a lot of new ideas from everyone else's fav's. Here are some of them from my list.

"Runnin' Down a Dream" - Tom Petty (funny to see that on most of your lists)

theme from "Rocky" - This is always the first song I listen to as I'm tightening up the laces and hitting the trail. I'm surprised I didn't see this on anyone else list. I also like "Going the Distance" from the same soundtrack.

"Hawaii Five-0" theme

"Lunatic Fringe" - Red Rider

"Walk Around Time" - Robert Cray

"Gimme Shelter" - Rolling Stones

"Honky Tonk Women" - tha Stones again

"James Bond theme"

"I Need To Know" - Tom Petty

"Run On For a Long Time" - Blind Boys of Alabama

and my favorites from the New Orleans category:
"Bap Bap" - Bonerama - it's got the perfect tempo for a good run

"Right Place, Wrong Time" - tha Doctor

"Sea Cruise" - Papa Gros Funk

"Son of a Native Stepson" - Sonny Landreth

I used to have "Cissy Strut" (the Meters) on there but I found I couldn't dance while I was running.

I'm dyin' over here. Been logging around 25 miles a week myself and just pulled my right calf muscle on my run Friday morning. Feels a bit better today and I'm still hopeful for the 5K on Sunday for which I'm already registered (Doh!). Never pulled a muscle before so don't really know what to expect; from what I've read it sounds like I've got a strain and not a tear. At least I hope. Trying to take it easy and see what the next few days bring. Sure am gonna miss the daily cardio in the meantime. Time to look for a Fest chair just in case I guess...

Thanks. Definitely won't be running tomorrow. The 5K is next Sunday in New Orleans. I've only been running outdoors for about ten months myself; did treadmill around three times a week before that for around three years. Totally hooked on outdoors now, and lots of hills on my (now) daily route, which is just over four miles. Don't think I've ever experienced a true "runner's high" myself, as it is my understanding that that comes (if at all) on much longer runs; but I definitely get a boost from the endorphins that lasts throughout the day. My longest run to date was 6.3 miles, the first 3.3 of which was pretty much straight uphill. It was just a few weeks ago, and far from a "high," I thought I was going to collapse at around 3.1 because it was a different route for me and I didn't anticipate how brutal the straight uphill part would be. Had to walk about 1/8 of a mile to regulate my breathing and heart rate (never, ever had to walk previously), but it was all good (and mostly downhill or level) after that. Felt great when it was over, but the "high" has still been elusive while running. But I definitely zone out a lot, especially with good music, and that really helps.

Anyone have any ideas for songs that go with dipping Krispy Kremes with bacon stuffed in the hole into a tall a glass of beer?

If you want a great running song that nobody's ever heard of, grab "Action" by Streetheart off Limewire. (It's almost impossible to get in the US otherwise.) The band was the precursor to Loverboy and it shares some of the riff from "Turn me Loose", but it completely kicks ass - one of the best rock songs ever written IMHO. A little faster than Lunatic Fringe (but same idea) and awesome vocals by Kenny Shields - trust me on this one, and be sure to turn it UP!@
