• Jordin Sparks is within sight of the big break she set out to find two years ago.
If she survives tonight's American Idol round, the Glendale girl will face just one more contestant next week in the season finale, the first Arizonan to have the Idol crown within her grasp.
Both the winner and runner-up can be expected to ride the media exposure on to national concert tours and major recording contracts.
•
Sparks always loved to sing, but at 15 and fresh out of junior high school, she committed herself to the craft professionally. She gave up good times with her high school friends and a spot on the softball team and hurled herself into a heavy performance workload.
For the kid who used to sing on fish-fry nights at a local restaurant and bar, this could be it.
Like most kids, Sparks' passion started out playfully. Her parents never pushed her into child stardom.
At age 3, Sparks waddled around singing to her infant brother. At Super Bowl parties, she was persuaded to sing for guests during TV commercial breaks.
She was outgoing, a trait needed to make friends as her family bounced from town to town, following father Phillippi's pro football career with the New York Giants and, eventually, the Dallas Cowboys.
But the family always kept a home base in Glendale, where mother Jodi's parents live. All that moving helped Sparks value friendships and family.
Growing up, Sparks sang in school productions and holiday worship services at Calvary Community Church, the same north Phoenix church where her parents were married.
For many, her eventual discovery seemed inevitable.
"She didn't have to work for (her talent), she was a natural. She had no kind of vocal training," said J. David Sloan, a Sparks family friend and the former owner of Mr. Lucky's, a country-Western restaurant and bar on Grand Avenue.
• Return to Arizona
• After Phillippi retired from the NFL in 2000, the family settled permanently in Glendale.
Sparks and her brother, P.J., joined theater groups and sports teams.
When Sparks was 12, she entered her first round of singing contests at Mr. Lucky's.
On Friday nights, she ate fried fish and danced across the nightspot's boot-scuffed wooden floors. A popular hangout for decades, Mr. Lucky's welcomed such well-known performers as Waylon Jennings, Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Urban, Dwight Yoakam, and even a young Vanessa Williams.
But on Fridays, kids took the spotlight. The loudest applause determined the night's contest winners. Sparks often sang gospel or country hits by Martina McBride.
"Every time she would sing (McBride's) Broken Wing at Mr. Lucky's, that was one of my favorites," said Sloan, a musician who led the bar's house band. "A couple of times, she sang a cappella. She'd bring the house down every time."
Sparks became a regular winner. She built confidence and became focused. She stepped up her competitive singing schedule.
In a short time, she placed in contests at the Arizona State Fair and the Country Thunder music festival. She auditioned for televised singing contests like America's Most Talented Kids and Star Search and, because of her young age, Junior Idol, an Idol spin-off.
At her own urging, she recorded a CD.
• 'I wanted to know more'
• At age 14, Sparks got a break.
One August afternoon, she and her mom packed into the family car and rushed from a singing contest in Arizona to another in Estes Park, Colo. They arrived late, barely making Sparks' stage call.
Beside the stage stood a "batter's box," a small space where the next contestant up would practice. Sparks bypassed the box, jumping directly on stage.
"I thought that she wasn't going to show up. When she suddenly ran up, I just assumed (her performance) would not be that great. It was just the opposite," said Chaz Corzine, a Christian-music talent scout who manages artists Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith.
"I wanted to know more about this girl . . . what her dreams were, what her visions were."
Corzine took Sparks to Nashville. She visited Smith's home, where by chance, Idol Season 3 cast-off George Huff was warming up beside a piano.
"As will happen in (Smith's) house a lot, they all ended up around the piano," Corzine recalled. "Jordin was kind of laying back, not taking the lead verse. He (Smith) told her to take the lead verse, and she blew him away."
Smith soon invited Sparks to open for him on his three-week Christmas concert tour.
• Staying grounded
• During her freshman year of high school, Sparks left her family at Christmas and boarded Smith's tour bus.
"We paired Jordin with one of the female background singers who had been on the road for years," Corzine said. "It was very natural for her. I think it was her first step toward a really big dream." Around the same time, Sparks starred in two plays and attempted to cut a second CD.
She also worked hard to maintain a normal teenage life. Despite the holiday tour, she made time to rehearse with her classmates for Sandra Day O'Connor High School's production of A Christmas Carol.
On the road, "She'd e-mail me when she got stressed or homesick," said Sparks' high school drama teacher, Amanda Moore. "(Students) would send her words of encouragement."
Sparks floated between being a typical adolescent and a focused professional.
"One minute she'd interact with (Smith) artist to artist, the other minute she'd be over with his 17-year-old daughter text-messaging and watching whatever kids watch," Corzine said.
Having missed too many days of school, she opted for home-schooling her sophomore year. That summer, Sparks auditioned for American Idol in Pasadena in Southern California but was rejected.
• Going professional
• At 16, Sparks traveled between Nashville and Arizona, searching for work. She recorded more of her second CD and appeared in a Nashville production of Magdalene. (She was denied the lead role and given a supporting role because of her heavier weight.)
Still, she longed for her Valley friends. Despite not being a student, Sparks attended Sandra Day O'Connor's fundraisers and plays.
Last November, she won Fox Channel 10's Arizona Idol spin-off contest and received a Ford Fusion.
She made a spontaneous decision on Sandra Day O'Connor's homecoming night. She put on a fancy dress, hopped into her new ride and surprised her friends at the school dance, classmate Monique Bruce said.
The Arizona Idol title also earned Sparks a second American Idol audition in Seattle. This time, the 17-year-old made it before judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, earning a golden ticket to Idol's Hollywood rounds and a spot among the show's top 24 contestants.
• On 'Idol' but far from idle
On the Idol set, Sparks worked until late into night, waking up early for three hours of schooling each morning. Over three months, she made it home to Glendale only twice.
She still misses the Valley, saying during an Idol taping in February that, "if I think about it too much, I miss all my friends."
But the sacrifices and work have paid off.
Each week, Idol viewers considered Sparks' talent, personality and appearance.
Though some critics panned her for her weight, youthful behavior and relatively privileged upbringing, viewers kept voting for her.
The talent-contest veteran is now one of the top three in a singing competition watched by more than 30 million people weekly.
If she makes it to the next round, only one person stands between her and the winner's recording package.
Even if Sparks loses, however, she walks away from Idol with invaluable experience and exposure to build on, Corzine said.
"I think the biggest benefit she has is that, as good as she is today, it's not as good as she's going to be," he said. "You don't peak as a singer at 17.
"That, to me, is the most exciting and encouraging thing. She legitimately has a shot at being one of the great singers of our time."

Jordin is more marketable than Melinda (I think someone else made that observation as well). Melinda may be the most talented, but if she wins, her record will probably suffer the same obscurity fate that Reuben and Fantasia's did . . .

"Jordin Sparks
Age: 17
Odds of Winning: 2-3
Best Performances: "I (Who Have Nothing)" (British Invasion week), "A Broken Wing" (Country week)
Worst Performance: "Livin' On A Prayer" (Bon Jovi week)
Times in the Bottom: 0
Why She Would Win: At only 17, Sparks' powerhouse voice can hold its own against most established belters. In addition to her incredible voice, people can't help but fall in love with Sparks's friendly, effervescent personality. Her age can also get many votes from younger viewers, whose power as a voting block was evidenced by the fact that Sanjaya made it all the way to the top seven. Finally, Sparks has improved over the course of the season, going from no-name to underdog to frontrunner, something that always seems to resonate with people.
Why She Wouldn't Win: Despite Sparks' improvement and numerous strong performances over the season, her competitor, Melinda Doolittle, has been more consistent week after week. Additionally, the fact that Doolittle is 12 years older than Sparks may cause more people to vote for her, thinking that Sparks has a lot more time to establish herself as an artist.
Prediction: Jordin should be the runner-up (and could still have a successful career as such like past second-place finalists Katharine McPhee and Clay Aiken). Although Melinda deserves to win more, Jordin will most likely end up as this season's American Idol."

Melinda Doolittle
Age: 29
Odds of Winning: 2-1
Best Performances: "Home" (Diana Ross week), "I Got Rhythm" (American classics week)
Worst Performance: "Love You Inside Out" (Barry Gibb week)
Times in the Bottom: 0
Why She Would Win: The contestant with the most consistency, Doolittle is a seasoned pro from her days as a backup singer. Often times a mediocre night for her is still far better than a good night for many of the other contestants. Doolittle is also skilled at choosing the songs she performs each week (a factor which the judges have said numerous times in the past can make or break a finalist). Because she is the oldest contestant, people may choose to vote for her over other finalists who still have years ahead of them.
Why She Wouldn't Win: Despite emotional performances, Doolittle's personality has not come out as strongly as the other two contestants' when she is not on stage. Her shock and awe after the judges' constant praise weeks into the competition, whether genuine or not, has seemed to annoy people. Also, her age may also work against her, causing younger viewers to vote for one of the two younger contestants.
Prediction: Melinda should win and will make the season finale alongside Jordin; however, she will end up this season's runner-up unless she has a really standout performance or Jordin has an unusually weak one."
pokerchick66
05-16-2007, 11:44 AM
Blake Lewis
Age: 25
Odds of Winning: 7-2
Best Performances: "You Give Love A Bad Name" (Bon Jovi week), "Time of the Season" (British Invasion week)
Worst Performance: "You Should Be Dancing" (Barry Gibb week)
Times in the Bottom: 3
Why He Would Win: The dark-horse candidate, Blake could pull off a win because he is one of the most unique contestants to ever be on the show. He has tried almost every week to make the songs his own, branding each with his own style. He is also a skilled beat-boxer, successfully making the semi-dated musical style once again popular. Additionally, his voice is able to adapt itself very well across several musical genres including pop, hip-hop, reggae, electronica, alternative rock and even country.
Why He Wouldn't Win: People enjoy his attempts to make every song he sings his own, but the results can be quite disastrous when it doesn't work. Sometimes he can make an older song sound contemporary once again, but other times he simply ruins classic tunes. And as adaptable as his voice is, it is not in the same league as Doolittle and Spark's power voices.
Predication: Unless he pulled off a superb performance yesterday while Jordin and Melinda faltered (deadline was before yesterday's episode), he will not make the season finale next week. As talented as he is, a great injustice will occur if Jordin and Melinda do not compete for the title of American Idol."

I'll be with y'all...lookin' for Melinda and Jordin in the Final, with Melinda taking it all. I agree with one of the reasons given why Jordin won't win: that she has more time to establish herself than Melinda.

I must be the odd ball here. But Melinda does nothing for me. Heck any of the finalists could be out-sung by many in my neighborhood or church. Melinda is BORING and while not part of the judging (but is really), she is not as marketable as Jordan or Blake. She is old *by industry standards and should have made it by now with the exposure she has had previously. Harsh I know. While it is touted as a singing competition it is way more. The package able (word choice) component is missing. She may make a record or two but she is not the next break out star. Background is where she belongs. Maybe she could do some gospel at Fest. I would tune in for that!
Jordan has improved each week and is very marketable due to her youth and looks. Her pipes with some further training could be better than Melinda in short time.
Blake is unique, contemporary (overused word-but applicable) and appeals to the masses that buy Cd's. He can sing regardless of the criticism. He also can dance, beat box and charm gays and straights. That in itself is unique.
Anyway no matter the results they are all winners and will move on, beyond where they were before AI.

I am very happy. Blake survived as he should have. Oh well they are all winners. What happened is that Jordan continued to improve and has the whole package. Blake is original and Melinda while my have the best voice never got better, she was the same ole same ole. Got tiresome. When the clips of her return home where shown she seemed aloof and disconnected. She needed excitement and had none. But I bet she will have a good career ahead of her.

Best contestant doesn't make it to ‘Idol’ finale
Was Melinda Doolittle too good for her own good?
"If there’s one thing “American Idol” has proven over the past two seasons, it’s that the best contestant doesn’t always win.
Whether it’s because fans think their favorite singer doesn’t need the support or because their rivals draw a crowd with faster dialing fingers, this marks the second year in a row that the singer best equipped for popular music stardom has been eliminated before the finale.
Melinda Doolittle was clearly the most talented of the remaining contestants, and also the most consistent. Paula Abdul compared her weekly performances to a vocal master class. Doolittle evoked images of Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, and Gladys Knight at various points in the competition.
The results of Tuesday night’s competition left her with the fewest number of votes among the three remaining finalists, and therefore Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis will be singing in the finale, and Melinda will be returned to the background.
For the moment.
Chris Daughtry was the favorite to win last season before his shocking exit and fourth-place finish. He went on to get himself a hit record, and so far has been the most successful of his class. Melinda may well wind up in a similar situation, as the power of the pocketbook may not prove to match the power of the text-messengers.
Ryan, Judges shocked
The results seemed to floor Ryan Seacrest, even though he knew before anyone else.
“One of our best singers ever, Melinda Doolittle,” he said as he read the bad news. Soon after, he added: “You’ve got a lot to do in the future. A lot of good things are going to happen to you.”
Judge Simon Cowell said Melinda Doolittle would be his pick to go to the ‘American Idol’ finale, but it wasn't left up to him. That sentiment was echoed by all three judges. Simon looked particularly stunned, especially since it was a repudiation of his statement Tuesday night that he expected to see her in the finale.
“Congratulations to you two,” he said mechanically to the finalists before turning and telling the third-place finisher. “My commiserations to you, Melinda, because you are one heck of a singer.”
The archival footage shown as she exited revealed how far she’d come from her first audition, where she looked the part of the scared and unconfident vocalist used to staying in the shadows, unsure as to whether she was really good enough to make it as a headliner.
She soon made those doubts seem foolish, and that turned out to be the problem. It didn’t take long for her to shed the frumpy clothing and look the part of a musical star, and she always was comfortable on the stage in front of the bright lights. Melinda became so good so fast that viewers considered her a professional singer, someone who didn’t really fit in with the rest of the untapped talent.
Her personality remained more constant, which seemed more at odds each week with the talent the viewers were singing. After a few weeks, even Simon commented that she needed to lose the look of surprise when the judges said nice things about her, since that happened every single week.
That’s not to say that the two finalists got this far because somebody pulled their names out a hat.
Co-favorite for quite some time
Jordin Sparks emerged as a co-favorite alongside Melinda in recent weeks because at her best, her vocals are almost as good as Melinda’s, and she’s also 12 years younger. The age difference is no small thing.
It’s getting closer to the day of reckoning on "American Idol" for the remaining contestants. Younger women have traditionally done better on the show than their rivals, and the oldest women ever to make the finale remains Katharine McPhee last season at the ripe age of 22.
The 17-year-old also has a personality that wins fans. She laughs off criticism and cries with joy each week when she advances. She’s the proverbial girl next door, if that girl had a dad who played in the NFL and a voice good enough to end any complaints about loud music emanating from the house."

One week Jordin sang some 60's song, now I don't remember what, but I told Mrs. AtPontchartrain, that girl oughta sing nothing but Fleetwood Mac and Jefferson Airplane. She's got THAT. Melinda, was super too. Beat Box Boy has had some good moments when his arrangements clicked, but nobody could really want to hear those sound effects more than about every 287 songs. So a pirate walks into a bar, okay, and swaggers up to the barkeep and demands a glass of rum. I believe his exact words were "Your rum or your life, what'll it be?".
And so the bartender, being a reasonable fellow, makes no complaint but simply grabs a large glass, a bottle of fine dark rum, and begins to pour. And while he's waiting for the glass to fill, he sizes up the pirate, having never seen a real honest-to-God pirate before.
This pirate is in full pirate gear. Gold earrings, patch over the eye, a big filthy white blouse covering his swarthy chest, tattoos everywhere. But protruding from his pirate trousers is the unmistakable form of a steering wheel.
Well, the bartender sees that the glass of rum is just about topped off, so he passes the glass across the bar to the pirate, who nods curtly and takes a huge swig of the rum. Slapping a dubloon on the bartop, he turns to walk away, when our bartender's curiousity gets the best of him.
"Wait, one second. What's up with the steering wheel?"
And the pirate turns back and fixes him with a beady glare from his lone eye. "Arrr, I don't know, but it's drivin' me nuts!"
