Fans were enraged and FOX affiliates were fielding complaints late Tuesday after AMERICA IDOL judge Simon Cowell was caught on camera rolling his eyes after comments made by contestant Chris Richardson -- comments about the tragic VIRGINIA TECH shootings!

"My heart and prayers go out to Virginia Tech. I have a lot of friends over there. Be strong," Richardson, a Chesapeake, Virginia native, told the audience of the nation's top-rated TV show.

A quick camera shot showed Cowell rolling his eyes and impatiently tapping his hand on the table.

Backstage, contestant Chris Richardson was left stunned, calling Simon's reaction "sad and hurtful," a top production source told the DRUDGE REPORT.

Cowell's flippant reaction came after he critiqued Richardson for a "nasally" performance of the Rascal Flatts song "Mayburry."

But Nigel Lythgoe, Executive Producer of 'IDOL', says Simon was not reacting to Chris.

In a statement given exclusively to the DRUDGE REPORT, Lythgoe explains:

"This is a sad time for everyone, so it is especially disheartening that a quick camera cutaway could have been misinterpreted. We're sorry for any grief caused by this misunderstanding, but Simon was not reacting to Chris at that point. He had turned to speak to Paula and didn't actually hear Chris' final comments."

Lythgoe continues: "Everyone at 'AMERICAN IDOL' feels compassion for those affected by this tragedy. We opened the show with those thoughts and Simon later expressed sincere condolences on behalf of the judges, recognizing the challenges we all face in dealing with this horrible event."

Earlier, a FOX executive said: "Look, in his defense, Simon felt Chris was cynically deflecting his criticism...It was unfortunate... he clearly was unaware the camera was on him when he rolled his eyes."

A backstage source defends Richardson: "Chris decided earlier in the day that he was going to give a shoutout to his friends.. he is hurting."

'American Idol' judge Randy Jackson returned to his old New Orleans stomping grounds with a post-Katrina care package, and tonight's special episode aims to keep the aid coming.

'IDOL GIVES BACK'

What: A special episode of Fox's singing competition series, featuring performances by the contestants and numerous other stars, as well as a fundraising pitch for children in New Orleans and Africa.

When: Tonight and Wednesday, 7 p.m. C

On top of his accomplishments as a lawyer, journalist, educator, novelist, diplomat, NAACP officer and poet, James Weldon Johnson was also a songwriter.

"Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," which Johnson co-wrote in 1900 with his brother John, is considered the "Negro National Anthem," according to reference sources. Johnson also wrote an opera, "Tolosa."

No telling what Johnson, who died in 1938, would've made of Sanjaya Malakar, but their worlds collided April 13 when "American Idol" came to the New Orleans elementary school that carries Johnson's name.

"Idol," from which Malakar was finally, mercifully, righteously banished last week, this week will devote two episodes -- tonight and tomorrow at 7 p.m. on WVUE-Channel 8 -- to "Idol Gives Back," three hours of awareness-raising -- and fundraising -- to benefit poor kids in Africa.

And, thanks primarily to "Idol" judge and Baton Rouge native Randy Jackson, the effort also will aid a grade school on the corner of Hickory and Monroe in New Orleans, among other local beneficiaries.

The charity event has roots in England -- writer-director Richard Curtis ("Love Actually," "Four Weddings and a Funeral") and "Idol" creator Simon Fuller are its godfathers -- and "Idol" judge Simon Cowell and host Ryan Seacrest traveled to Africa for other sequences that will air tonight. But including the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast in the "Idol Gives Back" effort was Jackson's idea.

" 'Dude,' I said, 'I've got to go home. Those people are still hurting,' " Jackson said during his visit here. "I played almost every bar in New Orleans. Fat City, I used to play four times a week. I played at Jazzfest a million times. Tipitina's, everywhere.

"The attention is even more important than the money," Jackson said. "We've seen money raised over the last couple of years. I think people have forgotten. I think they're not aware there are still very serious problems that nobody is doing anything about.

"I tip my hat to Brad Pitt for moving down here, doing what he's doing. The Edge has got his musical assistance program. I've talked with Wynton (Marsalis) and Harry (Connick Jr.) about what they're doing.

"Everybody's trying to do whatever they can. This city, this state, has given me so much, it's the least I can do. The show's helped us all so much. It's a good gift for us to make and we're happy to be able to do it."
