Mike Smith, lead singer of the Dave clark Five, passed away yesterday. He had been paralyzed since a fall in September 2003. We saw him play the Turning Point in Piermont NY earlier that year. He put on a wonderful show, Even though he was getting over a bad cold, he still sounded great, and was very energetic and fun. I remember the building practically shaking from the audience pounding on the tables during "Glad All Over". Afterwards he hung out, and was one of the nicest guys you could ever want to meet.

The DC5 are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in two weeks. It is many years overdue; they had 17 top 40 hits. There were reports that the band really had enough votes to be inducted last year. However a few votes arrived late and Jann Wenner wanted to let a rap group in, so they decided to put in Grandmaster Flash and the Furious five instead. If this is true, it is truly sad, since sax player, Denis Payton, died of cancer in December 2006 and now there will only be 3 members who can attend the ceremony.

Rest in peace, Mike. We'll miss you.

Very sad about Mike Smith. He only started getting back on stage in 2003 after so many years. Then he had his fall that same year.

It's too bad Dave Clark who owns all rights to the songs will not release any of them on cd. I hope someone asks him why at the induction ceremony.

Mike Smith RIP

Click on this link at 5:55 Eastern today (3/1) to hear an interview and live performance that Mike did on WFUV in 2003 when he played in NY: www.wfuv.org. It will probably be available in their archives as well.

Also at 6:30 Eastern VH-1 Classic is playing the tribute concert Paul Schaffer put together for Mike Smith. I think this is coming out on DVD but as far I know this is the first airing of it.
