The Krewe of Chew

Mike Smith, lead singer of the Dave clark Five, passed away yesterday. He had been paralyzed since a fall in September 2003. We saw him play the Turning Point in Piermont NY earlier that year. He put on a wonderful show, Even though he was getting over a bad cold, he still sounded great, and was very energetic and fun. I remember the building practically shaking from the audience pounding on the tables during "Glad All Over". Afterwards he hung out, and was one of the nicest guys you could ever want to meet.
The DC5 are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in two weeks. It is many years overdue; they had 17 top 40 hits. There were reports that the band really had enough votes to be inducted last year. However a few votes arrived late and Jann Wenner wanted to let a rap group in, so they decided to put in Grandmaster Flash and the Furious five instead. If this is true, it is truly sad, since sax player, Denis Payton, died of cancer in December 2006 and now there will only be 3 members who can attend the ceremony.
Rest in peace, Mike. We'll miss you.
