20 million gift planned for Gentilly
Foundation has purchased land for 20 new homes, to get started
Thursday, February 21, 2008
By Kate Moran
The founder of Barnes & Noble bookstores will spend $20 million from his private foundation to build and renovate homes in devastated Gentilly, an initiative that will match and possibly exceed the investment Brad Pitt's charity has made in the Lower 9th Ward.

Leonard Riggio and his wife, Louise, plan to begin by building 20 new houses in the Filmore section of Gentilly that will be donated to displaced homeowners. In return, those owners will surrender their flooded property to the Riggio Foundation to be rebuilt or torn down for the benefit of another marooned Gentilly resident.

I'm not sure about those terms, but this sounds like a positive sign!

I'd love to see rich folks play keeping up with the Pitts in New Orleans!

that's going to be a nice change for the area. My sister in law lives in Gentilly and when we stay I go walking around there. That section has a lot of housing that has not come back - and it's becoming a blighted area. Rather than it becoming an invitation for crime, this is a fantastic idea. I really hope it works out !

30 months after the storm, any help is good for the area. It seems that some of the Federal money that was allocated is starting to hit too. Hopefully we should start seeing major changes in New Orleans in short time....:)

And just think of the increase in liquor revenues when I hit town in June...do y'all tax beer and wine sales, if so I will be able to do my part in the rebirth :p
On a serious note, I think what Pitt and Global Green have done is issued a "put your money where your mouth is" challenge and some folks with really deep pockets and, hopefully, good intentions have done the puttin up!

wow, that's great news! That's where Will from Terrence Simien (now Shamarr's band) lives and he lost 3 of his homes there. It'll be nice to see more homes going back up in that neighborhood. Ibjamn lives there and little by little, it's coming back to life :)

BTW, any movement on that Walgreens Ib?
