... and would like to get to know a few folks going to the jazz fest. I am travelling solo and would love to meet up with people at the festival. I am 25, in journalism, love Bob dylan, old blues, Nina Simone, Dr John etc.. as well as classical, punk, ska, rage against the machine and tool. This is my first trip to the states.

Cheers Essex Girl--
You found the right place to go for good times, great music and generous friends!
Welcome.
When are you planning on going?
Well, cool. Welcometo the chat boards. Hang around here and get to know folks online. Every day atthe Fest, early afternoon, we set a time to meet on the Fest grounds, and you can put real world faces to online names. We're a friendly group, and you'll find it easy to make friends at Jazzfest.
You're gonna love it.

I agree with the above Essex Girl. I've made many great friendships on this board and you will too. Hang around, chime in on any thread you like, don't be afraid to ask questions and you have fun, and find new friends.
Also I believe there are a few Brits who post regularly here and are attending the fest as well as some Aussies so that should help you to not feel like a fish out of water.
Welcome and have fun!

Cor' blimey (yes I do say that), I can't believe I just got replies from people in places that just exist on the TV as far as I'm concerned. I have travelled a lot (my Dad was in the army and I was born in Hong Kong plus I went to Oz solo), but the US is quite daunting. I listen to so much blues that I'm sure I'll feel at home but it is still pretty trippy when the biggest trip I do everyday is to the tescos round the corner from where I work. I can't wait to escape from my job for 10 days; I only know a couple of people with the same passion for music as me. I can't wait and I hope I do meet you guys.

at the fairgrounds, folks will also have flags that identify their daily location, so as we get closer to fest there will be a thread for folks to ID themselves so you can have a place to hang out at the different stages if you're flying solo. welcome to the annual pilgrimage. see you in 2008 ;)

And you are going to LOVE Jazzfest.

Well, essexgirl, you're now a threadhead because you've posted here! And TH meetup times will be announced closer to fest. Also checkout the other subforums on this forum and be sure to visit www.swagland.com for everything you want to know about the jazzfest and www.jazzfestgrids.com for all the scoop on the nighttime shows. jazzfest is from 11-7 so you've got plenty of time for clubs at night. Have you got a place to stay yet?

Hey Essex, welcome!
Stick around and you'll get to know us and when the time comes for fest you can meet us in person. It's a blast! If you're interested, the Threadheads volunteer a few hours one morning or afternoon at Ms. Lena's beer stand at the festival. There's about 15 of us working at a time and that'll give you a chance to get to know some of us while volunteering for a really good cause. More details to come if you're interested k? Hope you stick around cuz once that lineup comes out in a few weeks, this board's gonna start rockin' :)

Hi Essex Girl, and congratulations on your decision to attend Jazz Fest. As my name suggests I am from just down the A12 from you and will be making my annual pilgrimage to the fest.
My sister lives in Lafayette now following Katrina and that is where I base my self for 10 days although during the two weekends of the fest I stay in the Quarter with friends.
You can be absolutely certain of a very warm welcome in N.O. and will meet upwith some fantastic people. Perhaps we can meet for a beer at Ms. Lena,s or in the quarter after a days festing.
I used to work in the Media in Essex up to a year ago, bet I know some of your collegues.
Check out the Jazz Fest Grids site to find out who is rumoured to be attending this year. It's part of the fun to guess who will be headlining.
Get ready to part!!

New friends AND neighbours AND Jazz Fest... you are gonna have a blast!
Has anyone heard from Slartibartfast and Ian lately (friends from your part of the world Essex + Dicky)? I think of her a lot, but lost her addy in the great computer crash of 06. Joey, didn't we get Ian's addy when Slarti was getting her new ticker?

Hi Essex Girl, Yes in Billericay as we write. My Sister has lived in Louisiana for 16 years and that is how lang we have been visiting tha area. LaShe used to live in New Orlean in the Quarter then moved just around the block from the Fairgrounds (where the Fest happens) and close to Luizzas. Liuzzas is a bar that becomes the unofficial Jazz Fest Centre in April/May. Check in every morning for your fix of Bloody Mary made to Billys special recipie!
She now lives in Lafayette (About two hours west). We have so many friends still in N.O.
Are you going both weekends? So much also happens in the clubs during the two weeks and also free concerts along the river walk ( called the Moon Walk) organised by the Mayors office. It's the best place in the world to be for Music and Food. (and booze!)

The mayors office shows (called the MO Fest) ran in '04 and '05, but did not survive the hurricane. None last year, and not expected this year. But there's still a lot going on between weekends: Piano Night and Instruments a Comin on Monday evening; Pondersoa Stomp on Tuesday; Wednesday in the Square; In Stores all afternoon at LMF each day; Chaz Fest on Thursday; Ingrid's BBQ, probably; and of course, the infamous Patry.

Hey all!
I haven't posted on here in a long time, mostly because I haven't had anything to add. But now I do.
As some of you know, I used to work in the Mayor's Office, where I produced a little event called MO Fest. Thanks to all of you who have posted with kind comments.
I'm happy to report that as of November I've been Director of Programs and Marketing at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, the nonprofit that owns Jazz Fest and uses the proceeds for various community development activities.
Part of our new strategy is to produce a lot more events. Late last year we did Fiesta Latina, the New Orleans Blues Festival and a Thanksgiving concert called Down By the Riverside.
We have a lot more on the books for 2007 -- including the return of Mo' Fest. (Before, the "MO" stood for Mayor's Office. Now we're just calling it Mo' Fest, which is what everyone thought it was, anyway.) Officially, it will be a production of the Jazz & Heritage Foundation, but my friends and former colleagues in the Mayor's Office have agreed to co-sponsor the event to help it succeed.
The dates will be the same as in 2003, 2004 and 2005 -- that is, the Monday and Tuesday between Jazz Fest weekends, April 30 and May 1 of 2007. It will be at the same place, the Hibernia Pavilion at Woldenberg Park. It will still be free. The hours will be slightly different -- noon to 7 pm, not 9 pm as we did before (don't want to take any business from local restaurants or clubs).
Still working on the lineup, but I've got a few pretty good ideas and hope it will be as fun as before. But if any of you saw the last one, in 2005, with Dr. John and Art Neville trading choruses on side-by-side B3 organs, you'll know that it'd be pretty hard to top that.
Our web site, www.nojhf.org, is about to undergo a major overhaul. It will be reborn sometime in February as www.jazzandheritage.org. Meanwhile, you can see us at www.MySpace.com/neworleansjazzheritagefoundation.
Please help me spread the word that Mo' Fest is coming back. Especially for those who are traveling to New Orleans, we want them to know that it'll be worth staying a few extra days.
Thanks again, and hope to see you back here soon.
Scott

ScottHey, Scott, congratulations on your new position and welcome to the board.
This will be my 20th consecutive Fest, and for all but a handful of those I've come for both weekends and the week in between. For me -- and I suspect we could have a long debate about this -- the week in between the two weekends is just as important as the weekends themselves. That is the best time to explore New Orleans and Louisiana. (For those of you who are new to New Orleans, once you discover the REAL New Orleans, you'll never set foot on Bourbon Street again.)
Of course the fact that Mo Fest will be back will only make the week in between that much more essential to Fest.

Hi Scott - congrats on the new job. Hope you are loving it.
So glad to hear that Mo'Fest will be back. And I really like the idea that the hours are earlier in the day, leaving more time for night time clubbing.
See you there!

Absoultely fantastic news! Especially with the 3 in-store locations down to 1 this year, it'll be great having another daytime daze-between option.

I am always up for a B3 summit!
If they can't do that, maybe a squeeze box summit! Zydeco to go! oh that would be good!
