Some worthy nominees there...although nothing from the Carnegie...and while foie gras gets on the list nothing with smoked salmon. There must be a pumpernickel bagel with lox and a schmear somewhere that is worthy.

But c'mon the McRib ??? How serious can that list be?

From the thread title, my guesses were the Ferdi, and the Central Market Muff. I'm glad I guessed wrong. Not being an olive fan myself, it's great to see the cochon de lait make the cut.

But, to share a spot on the list alongside the McRib? Dunno about that...

I know people who don't like olives who still love the muffaletta. Especially if they try it first. Now I'm sure you have done that but there is always hope for your taste buds Swagster. Several years ago I finally made a dish primarily of olives that my sister loved, and she was well into her fifth decade of really hating olives when she first tried it. I've posted the recipe here before, it starts with pitted oil-cured black olives which you bake with wine, zest of an orange as well as its juice, garlic and plenty of fresh rosemary. Oh and yes, now my sister also likes the muffaletta, but only when made Central Grocery's olive salad.

And no Muffy. I would nominate the Muff from here, from Fertita's, better than CSG IMO, but CSG is dam good.

You want lattke's, order a $%%^ing plate of lattkes on the side with some apple sauce or sour cream!!!!! Idiots! How'd Katz's pastrami make it? After all it's only served on rye with boring old mustard!!!!

#1 would be the first sandwich I remember. Bologna with Blue Plate dressing on Wonder Bread. A classic, but usually I pass on that one, these days ;)

No lox, but Elizabeth's has a worth salmon grilled cheese:

I'm with you on the olive thang, Swagmeister! I don't like olives at all - but I can enjoy a muff sammie after scraping the olive salad off . . . it leaves some nice olive oily flavor, without the nasty olives.

I'm with you Scoopy - Morons - the whole lot of 'em. Rye bread is a key ingredient - hello????

Okay - and as for olive salad - well, Mich I'm with your sister- but only 3 decades (okay - almost 4) into hating them.....except when they are chopped into tiny pieces, and made into tapenade (I know - I can't understand it myself), or in a few other things - preferably small amounts and cooked.

Muffaletta smells good, and I can handle about a bite of it - but damned I must admit - it sure does look good.

Mr. Onj, on the other hand - goes through the central grocery olive salad like it is a bad drug habit. Last time we were home we took a 50 gallon cooler with us as a piece of luggage - and when the guys at the airport opened it- they just started laughing. It had 2 muffelattas - 5 jars of olive salad, zapps salsa because they no longer ship that (haven't for about 4 years), 5 sticks of jacob's andouille and some local hot sausage.......(which we had portioned out and frozen solid before putting it in the cooler). When we got home, Mr .Onj ripped open the cooler and promptly ate the entire muffaletta and lapsed iinto a food coma until the next morning.

OMG - the sandwich I took to school for the first two years was bologna and hellmans (didn't know about blueplate) on wonder bread. Don't ya ever wonder why we didn't get food poisioning as kids since our little lunches stayed in the back of the room unrefrigerated?

Second sandwich was skippy peanut butter and smuckers strawberry jam. My mom hated grape jelly for some reason so I basically didn't know it existed until I was about 8 years old and at someone else's house....lol.

and that pickle with the "reuben" in the picture was crap too!!!

The first six years of school I never ate the cafeteria tray. Every day was either ritz crackers with pb&j or ritz crackers with mayo, bologna and velveeta. At home dad would fry that bologna until it was crispy on the edges and then slather white bread with mayo, add bologna and mmm. Try not to eat fake meat these days but it was oh so good way back when.

they neglected the imported Italian hoagie from Giovanni's Italian American Deli on East Ave, in Vineland NJ! Also home of the best pepper shooters ever and amazingly wonderful marinated artichokes... wonderfully garlicky.. yummy!

I just found out that Stein's Deli down here has seedless rye - I'm very excited!!! :)

Yep, I would NEVER order a reuben on a lattke either - though I do enjoy lattkes . . . just not as part of a sangwich.

As a connisseur (commonsewer) of sandwiches, I must weigh in on the topic. First of all, I don't own a jar of olives, but a muffaletta is a wonderful thing the way it's supposed to be. Funny that more people can eat a crustacean on a loaf of bread than can handle a slight amount of olive. Thirdly, if a pulled pork sandwich from Interstate BBQ (or from anywhere in the South) isn't one of the best sandwiches, then what do they know? I didn't see a good Philly cheesesteak mentioned or a great Italian hoagie. A Kentucky hot brown is served open-faced, but it's one of the greatest. Like I said, what do they know?

Love the Ferdi and the CdL.....BUT, the fact that the Muffuletta nor anything from Carnegie Deli isn't on this list -- AND the McRib (DISGUSTING!!!) and a Chick-Fil-A sandwich ARE -- puts this list in the "who cares" category. Weak....

I actually just consumed a tasty Muff...still licking my fingers. Yummy. To think that such a sandwich could be left off of this list makes me question it's credibility.

Well, baby - it's not a "sentiment" . . . merely that some of us just don't like olives. It's not a philosophical thang (I mean, I love olive oil for instance) - I just don't like the way they taste and their texture . . . but my motto is "To Each, Their Peach" - if you like them, groovilicious! :D

However, I AM very relieved to see that I'm not the only one who feels that way on here. :o

are you heading this direction? We're just off 40 actually... when you're heading to AC from Philly... From Atlantic City Expressway take Exit 28, Hammonton Route 54 (at bottom of exit make a right, this is Route 54 South). Travel South on Route 54 until you reach Route 40. If you cross Rt 40 and go straight through, Rt 54 becomes Wheat Road. If you follow Wheat Road to Rt 555 (Main Rd - there's a Wawa on the far corner) Go through that traffic light (when it turns green) and you'll come across East Ave, turn left and Giovanni's will be at the corner of East and Oak... or do you want me to pick up sammichs and pepper shooters and artichokes for you and meet you at the exit so you can get back on? LOL

I have never been a big olive fan, until the Muffaletta converted me. Now I love 'em! I sometimes think they don't put enough olive salad on 'em!

Yes...for those of us who never leave NOLA without a jar of CG Olive Salad...it is a sad and depressing sentiment. I even wrote a diatribe in response warning off people who don't like crusty bread last night (in case some of them were about to appear and proudly testify )...but pulled it in the saner light of day. At least no Vegan-istas have shown up to denounce cochon du lait...as of yet.

Yet if there is room at Jazz Fest for a curmudgeon like me....I guess olive abstainers, seafood shunners, raw-oyster ralph-ers, the crab-but-no-crunch-crowd, and the McRib for President krewe are all more than welcome to proclaim their likes and dislikes alike.

But do try the white chocolate bread pudding.

Unless, of course,the thought of sweet and soft ambrosia makes you gag for weeks.

As are most articles in national magazines like Esquire. The fact that not one pork shoulder sammy made the list from the Deep South is tell tale(PS - NC doesn't qualify). I certainly am glad for the NOLA entries although I gotta tell you, the fully dressed shrimp po boy from Domilisi's runs circles around the tourists around the Ferdi at Mother's.

Way too many entries from NE and Left Coast for this southern boy. But then again we don't buy many Esquire magazines in these parts.

OK, I'll take my complex back to the trailer park lest I offend.

Neat article, Zkitten. Thank you for posting it. It's great to know America is loaded with sammiches from coast to coast. I took an imaginary road trip in which I made a stop at every place on that list. I don't see why the McRib or the Chik-Fil-A was included, though. Maybe I'm a snob?

It does look like the authors of this piece did their homework. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw they included The Trailer Park Monte Christo from The Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland, OH. I hardly know how to describe it, except to say it's akin to a beignet on steroids.

As for the olive thing ... well, if some people don't like 'em, that means there's more for me! I opened a jar yesterday that was stuffed with anchovies. Mmmmmm!!! :)

Very early on, I introduced my daughter to one of my fav road snacks. It is called Hobo Sushi. Consists of Sardines, Wheat Thin crackers and Horseradish.


Anyway, I think New Orleans has the best sammiches in the whole wide world!

It is way uptown, and you can easily miss it even though it is on the corner. Not really much around it except residences. Keep an eye peeled.

Actually, I would vote for the shrimp poboy at Mandina's over Domilise's - specially since they got the ontion rings to go with it. (Canal Blvd. between Jeff Davis & Carrolton). ;)

Yes...for those of us who never leave NOLA without a jar of CG Olive Salad...it is a sad and depressing sentiment. I even wrote a diatribe in response warning off people who don't like crusty bread last night (in case some of them were about to appear and proudly testify )...but pulled it in the saner light of day. At least no Vegan-istas have shown up to denounce cochon du lait...as of yet.

Yet if there is room at Jazz Fest for a curmudgeon like me....I guess olive abstainers, seafood shunners, raw-oyster ralph-ers, the crab-but-no-crunch-crowd, and the McRib for President krewe are all more than welcome to proclaim their likes and dislikes alike.

Unless, of course,the thought of sweet and soft ambrosia makes you gag for weeks.

How many rules have I broken in quoting myself? But, yes, once there was a way here to get back homeward...I mean...to disagree with real passion in this forum- even getting in a poke or two (Sorry you "raw oyster ralph-ers") like calling someone a moron for not understanding rye bread.

And the net effect was that we all just arrived at fest a little more hungry ...

(Another positive was that "olives" are now mentioned in the middle of almost every brew-ha-ha on the bored.)

Ok, if you are now suspecting there is no real new message here, I confess. There is a recipe in this thread that I am trying to make easier to find.

Some worthy nominees there...although nothing from the Carnegie...and while foie gras gets on the list nothing with smoked salmon. There must be a pumpernickel bagel with lox and a schmear somewhere that is worthy.

But c'mon the McRib ??? How serious can that list be?
