Has anyone seen Galactic doing the From the Corner to the block tour? Just wondering how much rap/hip hop they do? I really like that cd a lot and am just wondering how they can pull it off with so many different special guests on it. I'm seeing them in Detroit in April.

I'm not normally a fan of hip hop, but I really like the CD. Saw them last month and I wasn't as crazy about the show. Yes, it was mostly hip hop after a couple of instrumentals to open. The guests were Mr. Lif and Boots Riley; Boots was a lot better. But the show stealer was Grace Potter joining Galactic for 'Whole Lotta Love.' Here are a couple of reviews of the show I went to:

I didnt have the CD or know what to expect ... sterted off great, and then it was really, like 85 percent hip hop ... no soloing, little jamming ... I think the crossover is great, but I go to see Galactic to see them bring it, and it just wasnt the case ... DISCLAIMER : Personal Tastes Vary

yeah, I caught them streaming a couple of times and just could not get into it. And Galactic is arguably one of my all time favorite live bands. I actually passed on them during their recent NY run cause of the hip hop. Just my taste though. Still a Galactic fan, just going to wait till they get this outta their system.

I saw them at a free show at World Cafe Live in Phila. The show is online here:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=16269876

It was maybe half instrumental, half rap - maybe 60/40 rap - (I think they had 2 or maybe 3 guest rappers), and let me say that it was certainly the best backing music I've ever heard behind rappers. I also didn't enjoy it as much as previous Galactic shows I've seen, but if you liked the FTCTTB CD, I'm sure you'll like the show.

Thanks for this thread...I'm only just starting to listen to Galactic for the first time because of From the Corner to the Block which I love (I don't normally like rap or hip hop but it sounds sooo much better with a deep funk groove) - but I've gotta go through their back catalogue!! I'm seeing them with Chali2Na and Boots Riley at the Byron Bay bluesfest next month.

I saw the Galactic show here in Richmond in November. I thought it was terrific, and that the hip-hop gave more texture to the music and vice-versa. Boots was dynamite, the lights were psychedelic, and the funk was the bottom of it all. The only quibble I had was with the voice mikes -- Boots got pissed at one point, so I think it was an aberration. I just wish I could have seen them at Tip's last weekend with the Soul Rebels. That's my idea of outtasight.

I discovered Galactic in 98, the year their first two cds came out, and my first year at the jazzfest. Those 2 cds, Cooling OFf and Crazyhorse Mongoose, are still my fave Galactic sound. Pure. My fave show would be Memphis around 03 at the New Daisy Theater. They started the accompanying slide show with the cover of Cooling Off and a song from that album. Worked their way thru their catalog as the night wore on. Beautiful night. :D That one is followed closely by an instore at Tower Records in New Orleans during fest in 99. But enough reminiscing. The new hiphop stuff has me stretching about as far as I can at the moment. I like it but I sure don't love it. And it caused me to skip them on NYE. Hope they'll come full circle. Or at least move towards shows that cover all their funkky music.

Hey Now Corona-- Galactic was here in Salt Lake on wed. night..... I was less than impressed. I used to really like Galactics' sound, but for I have come to enjoy them less as time goes by. It seems that thier songs are sounding very similar to one another. I really enjoy Stantons drumming though, so I like to see him perform with other combos during Fest. I hope you enjoy your night w/ Galactic in april, Matthew

Hmmmm......wonder what's happening with them? That's too bad and yeah, Stanton is cool. He's my favorite member. Oh well, I love the hip hop cd and it's not usually my style. As long as they "bring" something, I should be happy.
Thanks guys....let me know Jelly!

Caught Galactic last night and they blew the roof off! I'm not crazy about the new CD, but they tore it up!

They played about 4 older tunes (including Go Go) before they got into the hip hop/rap. I'm not a fan of rap or hip hop, but it actually sounded pretty good. They had a couple of "special guests", Charlie Tuna and a few others I wasn't familiar with. Also, Rockin' Jake sat in for a couple of songs. I'd say the show was 50/50 on new stuff vs old. They did a killer version of Immigrant Song.

Knowing your style Lis, you'll have a great time at the show. Enjoy!

I swear these words sound like they could have come right out of my mouth.
'98 was my first JF and that is when I discovered Galactic. I know you and I would have been at the New Years show had they not gone down this track but I do think they will be back. I was crushed when Theryl got sick. He was my highlight....we would always bet what color suit he would come out in...

I dig the GalacticRapper thang, for the most part....probably enjoy Boots the most, followedby Chali2na and his brother. I think that the band has done a good job of mixing in the hip-hop tunes and the staples of their repetoire, much like they did with the bluesy Houseman numbers.

As for Grace Potter and The Nocturnals - THEY SMOKE!!!! Saw them at High Sierra some years ago, but saw them recently on Jam Cruise and at Da Parish (HOB) and they have really gotten stronger. it is a sin they aren't playing a set at the Fest this year or any nighttime shows either. Don't worry, I'm workin' on makin' sure that doesn't happen again in 2009.... :D

YANGETY!

Different strokes. But I dig their hip hop excursion while still backing it up with some funky brassy loops. Their show at bonnaroo last year was off the charts good stuff.

Hey Lis - I'm planning on being at that show - as a second annual pre-Jazz Fest warm up - I'm coming home that day (the 13th) from a short trip to Cancun and one of the reasons I'm coming back Sunday vs Monday is to see the Galactic show. I hope it measures up to last year! Hopefully I will run into you and your Krewe again!

Lis,

Show was awesome! I loved the infusion of Charlie Tuna and guests - it gave the music some umph! I'd say the show was 75% classic Galactic too so you don't get hip-hopped out. We danced our asses off and they closed with Whole Lotta Love cover along with Tuna et al - very cool! Can't wait to see you in a few weeks! Let me know how Tortola was.

Saw the show Saturday night in Lawrence, KS. Had a great time. Galactic would play 3 or 4 songs, then the rappers would play 2 or 3 with them. Then just Galactic for 3 or 4 more. Back and forth. I was pretty skeptical before the show, but after it was all said and done I was really glad I went.

I admire Galactic's efforts at innovation/experimentation/crossover.
But for me, a little of the GalacticRapper thang goes a long way.
They've long been one of my favorite live bands, and, like others, I'll be happy when they get back to emphasizing the funk/jamz. Plenty of other places to go for rap if you're so inclined.

but it I get a vibe in this thread about Galactic and their change to hip/hop or rap. I guess I view the entire thing differently. Generally, I don't see music in genres. I see music as fluid, not a box to 'stay in' or 'get back to'. My guess is they probably don't see what they are doing now as different than what they have always done....make good music, jam out and make people get up to get down. Like everyone else here I go back to the days of Crazyhorse Mongoose and Coolin' Off and have seen them too many times to count, but I differ from most in that I don't want them to do what they have always done or break out of this 'phase' they are in.

my 2 cents.

I'm just trying to roll with it because my musical journey just wouldn't be complete without galactic. I've said many times along the way, as they grew in yet another new direction, ummm, i'm not sure i like it. And then I did.
