Sorry, way off topic. The latest campus slaughter hit very cose to home. I attended NIU, had classes in that very lecture hall. My niece is a student at the school the shooter had most recently attended. Friends & family members have been students, faculty, & staff there. When it's this close, it definiteley feels different. So senseless, so incomprehensible, so horrific. Why?

Wait... not off topic... NIU has has an award winning jazz program for many years.

So sorry about all of your pain. Everyone is in my prayers....

I don't get it....all of these shootings...
I will still never forget where I was and what I was doing during the Columbine shootings....SO SAD!

This is a terrible tragedy..of the style that seems to be coming once a week now. My deepest sympathies go out to the families, friends, alumni and neighbors. Like much of senseless crime everywhere, it is truly heartbreaking just to read the ages of the victims.

i feel myself becoming numb to all this....
its a reflection of our society as a whole...
almost every continent has a war/genocide of some kind going
on...

Both this, and Tinley Park in recent weeks. My heart goes out to all the family and friends and recovering victims. I was on plane last weekend with a woman who had come up for her cousin's funeral (she was a victim of Tinley Park). This video game shoot em up mentality is sickening. We've seen it even closer to home where I live with the original school shooter, Laurie Dann, and the white supremist shooting spree of Benjamin Smith. Fortunately, MOST of the victims survived those two incidents. I don't know what kind of society we are raising so many sociopaths but it tears at my soul that these people have such disregard for human life. All I can do is hug my kids a little bit harder and pray a little bit more and hope that God sees me worthy of inviting me to his fais do do one day.

WHY is certainly the big question - I just don't understand it. And I'm sure it feels very different when it's that close to you - so sorry.:(

Glinda, my heart goes out to you and the whole NIU family....it is really just tragic how frequently this is happening these days.

As cold as it may seem, I just don't understand why these individuals that end up shooting themselves after slaughtering innocent people just don't off themselves and be done with it. If you are not going to get help (and prolly have ignored the advice to do so from loved ones) don't take innocent people out with you.

Hi exitman, welcome back. Aren't you one of the footstompers? Now you are REALLY close to ground zero on this one. Just learned that one of the victims was the son of a guy who I knew back when we were both at school there.

Thanks threadheads... for your kind words.

Well I'm off for a fun weekend of cross-country skiing in Wisconsin with a fabulous group of friends who came together many many years ago at NIU. The NIU family will be in our thoughts & prayers.

Glinda, yes it's true. I am still a Footstomper. Maybe someday the band might return to Fitzgeralds. I will let you know. Enjoy the snow. There is more coming.
