My friends and I want to rent a house and would like to know 1) where to search, 2) the best area to stay and 3) if anyone knows of any good deals? I have 6 people coming with me and so it would need to be a house of a decent size. Any ideas?? Thanks, I love y'all. Cindy in Nyc.

Well, it isn't a house, but I have stayed with large groups (up to 24) at the French Quarter Suites on Rampart. They have a hotel, but also run several large shot guns along Rampart. All the amenities of a house, large bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, furnished living room with TV etc. but with daily maid and towel service etc. Some have balconies and others court yards.

Good access to the quarter and the fest too. Good luck

check here:

http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/louisiana/new-orleans
http://neworleans.craigslist.org/vac/

*disclaimer*
many of the people on vrbo do not update their calendars so it can be misleading (and annoying!) haha. many places are already booked.

i'd say craigslist is your best bet. good luck!

i am certainly not an ole' timer here, but i just had the rug pulled out from underneath me on a house that we were renting. we reserved in november, sent in deposit and sent our flight info down a couple of weeks ago. at that time, he decided to not rent and returned my deposit (he decided the neighborhood was just not safe anymore). it put me in quite a spot and i ended up paying double cause i had to book so late. just be careful...course, i don't know how you would avoid such a thing...this was through VRBO.

We had a place fall through in mid january and scrambled to try to find a place for 7 people. Pretty much everything we called was filled up. Craigslist is probably your best bet for finding a place. Good luck!!

I've had pretty good luck with rentalo.com and vrbo.com. Found a couple of VERY nice places in the Quarter.

(That being said, in booking with private owners I have run into one or two situations similar to Linza's where I thought I had a place booked only to have the reservation pulled out from under me, so to speak. (It's pretty frustrating to then have to go through the search process all over again, and with fewer options due to the time lapsed.))

wow, very cool! It's funny I have no idea which Theads know each other etc, except for those who I know from the NY area. I've always been with a big crowd at the fest and never got to many of the meet ups. Hoping to chagne that this year.

Good luck opening the B&B!

Just gather up all the snow and put it in the freezer. When you come down for fest pack it in your suitcase. Put the suitcase in Jenn and David's freezer. Then in June you can open up a Snowball stand! Great flavors, too! Do I hear Bacon Vodka snowballs?

Linza, I had a similar thing happen to me. My contact flaked on me, too. Booked in Nov., then she tells me around Christmas she decided to rent to a previous client. Mine was thru vrbo as well. Still waiting for the deposit to be credited to my account.

Hey now,

It would be interesting if you all posted the names and addresses of the properties you got snubbed on, so hopefully none of us would rent from or let that person tie up our hard earned dollars in the future...

By the way mightyrad, I dream of moving to NOLA and starting a B&B myself!

Funny, what if someone on here is already renting it??

Anyway, congrats and good luck Jada & Gumbo. See you in April!

Yay Jada & Dan!

I agree, best advice if you're looking for a house for fest is HURRY! Most everything is full (we found so many cool places, ah, maybe for next year) :) We did find the one we eventually booked on craigslist, seems if it's posted there it's still likely to have availablility (or they wouldn't post . . .)

Ugh -- that is messed up! I hope you get your deposit back soon. I was fortunate that the last time an owner 'flaked' on me, they returned my deposit very quickly.

Thanks, Cleophus. I guess that's what I get for planning early! Usually, I'm not even thinking about accommodations until Feb. :)
It's 300 bucks, could be worse, I guess, if I'm not reimbursed. But, at this point, I'm not to inclined to transact business with vrbo in the future. Sorry to be so negative. I'm sure lots of you have had positive experiences with them.

well, in my case, he kept thinking the area would get a little better, and maybe it's ok for locals, they know their areas and are familiar with their streets, but he just wasn't comfortable having a tourist there. he did shut all his property's down. i wasn't mad at him, just in a crunch at that time.

300 is a lot of money. my guy returned the money and then sent an email explaining why. it went over a lot easier..but mine was only 50.
