I am new to the board and am an avid geocacher...I know, what in the he-- is that. It is touted as the worldwide treasure hunt. Check out geocaching dot com to learn more. I am interested at setting up an event for geocaching festers to combine there love of both things. If anyone is a geocacher and would like to attend or even just meet and grab a few caches, please let me know! Kevin

I used to do a little a couple of years ago. Haven't done it in awhile.

BTW, welcome to the boards from another North Carolinian! :-)

I don't think we're festing this year, but there are some good caches in town. Have you cached in NOLA before?

I know a couple of guys who are into it and they seem a tad obsessive to me,but I'm sure they say the same thing about me hanging out on a Jazzfest board all of the time.If it gets you out to take a walk in the woods it's a good thing.

I used to work at REI and have heard a lot about it, but haven't had the luck to try it yet . . . would LOVE to though! :)

Welcome!!! :D

I read about it years ago and thought it was interesting. I think I tried a few, but they were pretty difficult & I got frustrated and quit.

I'd do it again, 'specially if it were NO-themed. What the 'ell, add it to the list with daily trivia and scrabble tourneys. ;)

I've slacked off over the past year, but it is a fun hobby/sport/time-waster. The best ones are the clever, tricky ones as opposed to simply hiding something in a light pole in a Wal-Mart parking lot (I'm not proud though, I've hunted all of 'em).

This is, without a doubt, my favorite geocache in New Orleans:

And yeah, some people can be obsessive about it, but I enjoy the challenge, getting out into the woods, going someplace I wouldn't normally think to go, or discovering something I wouldn't ordinarily see.

Hey, TH Geocachers - what's a good GPS to get for geocaching? Any recommendations?

Thanks for all the posts!! I have been geocaching for only 14 months and am still fairly new to it, but I must say I am addicted. It hasn't consumed me...yet. I am not obsessive about it, but I do enjoy it thoroughly!! It defnitely takes you to soooo many places that you never would have discovered on your own. I attempted a couple of caches last year while in NOLA for my Jazz Fest de-flowering, hehehehe. I did get to do the cache called "View Carre'" and what an INCREDIBLE experience!! I was able to take my hosts who are 9-10 year vets. What an amazing thing to be able to show to people who have been to NOLA time and time again, but never would have gotten a chance to see without Geocaching. THIS IS A MUST DO CACHE IN NOLA!!! To answer the GPSr ?....I have an Etrex Legend, and I love it!! There are a couple of cheaper models, but this one isnt too bad, no more than 150.00. Also, if you are going to geocache and geocache only, do not get a Car unit, even if it says it can be used as a hand-held. These units are pretty hard to use as a han-held GPSr for geocaching. They are great for using in the car, but not so user-friendly for geocaching. I am getting FEST FEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bumping the Geocaching thread...

Yes there are TONS of caches in City Park and along Bayou St.John..

I am trying to get one placed just outside the Sauvage st. gate for fest goers...

I'm pretty new to geocaching but it is fun... and many of those in the park are fairly easy to find.

Let me know about that Sauvage St. cache, I would thoroughly love to snag up a smiley AND attend fest all in the same day. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
