Tom Petty will be touring with Stevie Winwood this summer. Petty puts on an amazing show - you definitely get your money's worth. It also looks like he is keeping prices down. [$40 - $150 @ the Hollywood Bowl is very low for a BNA].

Steve Winwood is a classic and doesn't tour that often.

Here are the dates: http://site.tompetty.com/tour/tour.html

Tom Petty is Super Bowl Half Time.

Yep, I think I'm going to try and catch them when they come to San Antonio in August. I saw Tom Petty a bunch of years ago and he did a great show; I'm reasonably confident that he still will.

I love Winwood's music, but wonder how he sounds now.

Murray - he's been known to add dates but MSG would be pretty cool. We've never seen Steve either. Can't wait.

Are you solo again this year at JF? Hope not!! :D

He was incredible at Crossroads this summer! Played some Blind Faith with Eric and some beautimous Traffic! His guitar playing was better than ever, voice was strong. It was great to see him play lead again, he can wail!

With all due respect to Tom Petty, I am still puzzled by his choice as the Super Bowl Halftime show. He doesn't have any connection to the host city, he hasn't released a hit album in years, and...well, it just seems like an odd choice to me. I'm sure he'll be fine, and I have nothing against the guy, but what was the thought process there? If you look at the past performers, he doesn't really fit the profile, you know?

Was just listening to a Traffic disc yesterday and was again reminded of what fantastic music they made, song after song. I saw Steve Winwood 4 or 5 years ago and he was great. I was surprised at how young he looks, then blown away when I found out he was 15 when he was in Spencer Davis Group.

Sounds great except, they are playing the United Center. I'm not fond of having to carry a telescope to figure out who is on stage.

He does have a tour starting soon, and a book and DVD that just came out late last year ---"Running Down a Dream"...and BTW, I think it was a good "no mess, no frills show.

As for artists with connections to the host city, my vote would be for Alice Cooper!;) :D

By THOR CHRISTENSEN / The Dallas Morning News
tchristensen@dallasnews.com

Tom Petty bills himself as an old-fashioned rock 'n' roller who takes a stand against all the jive and corny aspects of show biz.

But Sunday, he backed down in his Super Bowl halftime show. It seems the rocker was lip-syncing.The 57-year-old singer wouldn't be the first – or the last – musician to lip-sync at the Super Bowl. Playing a noisy football stadium on live TV is such an acoustical nightmare that most acts decide to tape their 12-minute set the week before and "sing" into a dead microphone during the show. The only thing live is the between-song "Thank you!"

Janet Jackson was obviously lip-syncing in 2004, and Paul McCartney appeared to be doing the same in 2005. But Prince and the Rolling Stones reversed the trend at the last two Super Bowls, with live sets that were raw but still spectacular.

Mr. Petty and the Heartbreakers lacked that element of danger in their by-the-book rendition of "American Girl," "I Won't Back Down," "Free Fallin' " and "Runnin' Down a Dream."

All the tell-tale signs of lip-syncing were there: The vocals sounded too pristine, Mr. Petty's lungs didn't seem to be expanding far enough, and every time he sang, his mouth was strategically hidden behind a big spongy microphone.

Perhaps the real giveaway came during his "ad-libbed" aside in "Free Fallin' ": He backed away from the mike a split-second before his voice trailed off.

The apparent lip-syncing wasn't the only brand of cheese on the buffet. Like most half-time shows, this one began with shots of manic fans sprinting toward the stage à la A Hard Day's Night. During "I Won't Back Down," the camera zoomed in on a bunch of teen girls excitedly jumping up and down.

The last time those things happened to Mr. Petty when cameras weren't on was in 1979.

Still, you can't fault him for taking the gig. In an age when bands like his are banished to the classic-rock ghetto, it's hard to pass up 100 million viewers – especially when you've got a new tour to promote.

Not so coincidentally, tickets for Mr. Petty's 36-city U.S. trek, including a Dallas stop on Aug. 28 at American Airlines Center, go on sale Monday: The same guy who sang "I was born a rebel" was also born a pretty smart businessman.

Hey, good on him. I only wish they would have substituted Tom Petty for Tom Brady in the second half...maybe they would have had better luck!

Hey Festivalgirl & boy, and any So. Cal. Threads

If you guys dig Tom Petty you should check out the Dirty Knobs playin the Viper Room Feb. 29th ($15. and still tickets left). The Dirty Knobs are mostly the Heartbreakers and their sound is mostly like what you hear at a Tom Petty Show, but without Tom. They only play small clubs mostly in So. Cal. and they also seem to have surprise guest that show up and play with them.
Sorry I missed you guys at L. A. Mardi Gras, I had the flu.

Hey Lisa!
Yeah, after their fantastic set at Crossroads II last summer, they decided to do this gig. Clapton said something like "we have unfinished business", referring to their Blind Faith days. We got nice seats for the Thursday show, and we'll be in town for a few days to visit with the Zipcodes, the Ciscos, and some other friends. Can't wait!

Then I ended up getting an email from Petty's fan club, which I had joined a couple of years ago to get good seats for his show here. So, I got hooked up with great tix for Winwood/Petty here this summer! Guess I'll get my fill of Stevie this year!

Hey Bryan,
you know when I first asked "where's this" I thought this was about Stevie Wonder for some reason, and I couldn't find any info on THAT then realized it was Winwood... sounds very cool! re Tom Petty, I saw him years ago with Dylan and that was great, they each did their own sets, then got together for one. Maybe we'll check him out when he comes to Boston. Anyway your trip sounds like a great plan- enjoy NYC!
