View Full Version : A different sort of moment

Passing behind the stage after CSN we saw a mob of people trying to get the attention of the band, David in particular. The fans were kind of scary in their zeal to get a 'moment' with their heroes. I have many times criticized rock stars for whining about their lives when clearly they have so much going for them. But at that moment I felt really bad for Messrs Crosby Stills and Nash. It sort of gave me an idea of how weird and difficult their lives must be at times.

A lot of folks trying to get their attention, yelling and pushing and clamoring in a borderline scary sort of way, in the midst of this I realized I was drawn into the vortex as well, camera at the ready. I stopped myself and split. But not before getting a shot. Hmmm...

I know this is a "tardy" response, but I have a recollection from that day that'll stick with me for years... There we were, totally enraptured with getting a decent spot for the subdudes, who opened for CSN, only to find out that 90% of our neighbors were just holdin' down real estate for the headliners' set. Ouch! Tommy's rippin' it up, and zoinks! breaks a string - with no back-up guitar... the band's in disarray, looking at each other, then at Tommy's guitar, when - out from the wings - comes Steven Stills with one of his strats, hands the guitar to him, then does the "we're not worthy wave" to Tommy. NOW, everybody around us who was talking & partying 5 minutes earlier is wondering just who the heck these subdudes guys are! :) They got into it, and really brought the end of that set to a higher level. I asked Tommy about it at the Great American a few months later, and he was pretty sure that the guitar Stills lent him was probably worth what he'd earned the previous year. there's a picture somewhere on the web of the guitar "hand-off".
