NYmama asked this question of corona in another thread so here we go.
I went to my first jazzfest in 1998 because I saw Keb Mo and Bonnie Raitt were playing. Came solo and made tons of festfriends and have only missed one year since. This is my ten year anniversary and now I rarely visit the big stages. Give me some brass and injuns!

April of 1989. Had never really paid attention up until that point to the Nevilles, Allen Toussaint and Irma Thomas. My life has never been the same.

2002 was my viriginal year! Finally decided after 9/11 that life was way to short to keep talking about wanting to do things and not doing them and Jazzfest was up on the top of my list!! Seriously had no intention or inkling that this would become such an absolutely obsessive addiction!

My first fest was April 1988 - instead of finals I took in the Fest. One of the best decisions I ever made. Have not missed one since....will not ever miss one..... The performers I have seen over the last 20 (holy crap - I'm getting old) years have been phenomenal.

So you came for the BNA and was hooked.
I know you like New Orleans brass bands.
Are you going to check out Tower of Power
with all of their brass?

Around my birthday (March) of 1970, I ran away from home and came to New Orleans. I had a room at 1415 Esplanade (empty lot now) and heard they were doing a some little music thing over in the park and I walked over.

I swear - if you are serious - that's the best Fest story I've heard yet.....

Came for a visit and missed the Fest (which we had never heard of) by that much! Started planning for our first (2006) as soon as we got home.

1988. Read about the fest in Rolling Stone the year before. Thought I'd check it out. As soon as I got to the fest I knew that was where I was supposed to be. Still feel that way.

A friend hit her midlife crisis, left her husband and moved to New Orleans in the spring of '02, just after Mardi Gras. I had just become a fan Terrance Simien and was checking his tour schedule. Something called the New Orleans Jazz & Hertitage Festival appeared on it and I thought, "Hey, that might be a good time to go visit."

And the rest, as they say, is history...

1992.
Mr. FnG had some work to do in New Orleans in April and I decided to come along. Checking for things to do, we discovered Fest.
We missed 93, came back with friends in 1994 and have attended every Fest since. Each year we drag more folks along (22 for 2nd weekend last year!).
What started as one weekend soon became both, and last year we did the whole shebang, including the daze between and what for me will be a lifetime amazing memory, renewing our wedding vows for our 20th anniversary at the Patry, surrounded by an amazing group of wonderful Threadheads.

This year will be our 16th Fest and we will be back for the entire time. As previously noted, you might get drawn in by the BNA's but when New Orleans music and Fest gets in your blood, it is the local performers and the entire atmosphere that makes it so very special.

2002 was first for hubby and me as well. Greg had talked about wanting to go to Jazzfest ever since we met in 1998, but it was left up to me to actually say, OK let's do it. :) So I got online, arrived here and the rest is history. We have been to fest every year since 2002.

I visited New Orleans for the first time as an adult in 2002 after a minor motorcycle accident prevented my from going to bike week. Loved the city and the music and everyone told me to come back for fest. So I did. I've been trying to get back ever since but life has a way of getting complicated. But after a trip to Crawfishfest this year I've got the bug real bad, so to speak, so we're on our way as soon as May comes around. I can't wait.

We spent the weekend perusing old guide books and wondering what the post-katrina tourism scene will be like.

Lotta water under this bridge. Almost all was very, very good. So I guess I'll go back again this year :)

1999... I was supposed to come to Fest in 97 and 98 but had to cancel because of finals and the profs wouldn't let me take them early, but in 99... I actually took a few of them while in New Orleans, because the prof emailed me the project I had to finish in Photoshop2 and Illustrator (same prof taught both classes) and Quark. I did them at my friend Nick's house using his Mac and even made it to the PDKK boil across the street in time for Danny to run up to me and pick me up and swing me around! It was my first fest, Voo bought me a brass pass for my graduation gift, and I was supposed to do both weekend, but my kid got sick and I ended up flying home on the second sunday... the sacrifices we make for our children!

Oh gosh, I feel so young here. This year will be #3 for us (me & festdude).

I'd been visiting NO regularly since 1999 (my best friend lives in Baton Rouge). One time we were chatting with a local there when, upon learning we were both musicians, asked why the heck we haven't been coming to JazzFest? So, the next year (2006), since it was right after 'the storm', we felt this pull to get to the city we love and support her. We just HAD to be there. Oh yeah, and Dave Matthews was playing. That first year, we just kept looking at each other in amazement during the weekend. Yep, the BNAs will get you there, but the food, the vibe, finding the local and not-so-well-known bands will keep you coming back. Truth be told, we walked away from DMB partway through his set to head over to the Economy Hall tent.

1989 was my first fest. My brother had gone the previous year with a trip from WXRT, a local chicago radio station that used to organize group trips.
After he came home with tales from the fest I had to check it out for myself.
We hopped aboard the "City of New Orleans" train for our 19 hour trip. The ride there was great everybody partying with anticipation of the fest. The ride home was miserable, we were tired, hungover, wiped out, on what felt like a shaking tin can for an eternity.
Even after that I was hooked. We attended 9 years in a row and then started going every other year.
I have always gone with the same group of friends. This year will be different. Our friends will not be attending but we are bringing our adult children to turn them on to the fest for the first time. Cant wait to start a new tradition.

1998. Just got divorced and went with a friend, didn't know anything about fest or even care all that much (besides the BNAs), just wanted to go for Bourbon Street and boys ;) Brought Jeff for the first time in 2003. Haven't missed any since the first year, so this will be fest 11 for me and 6 for Jeff.

I was on one of my brief visits to New Orleans in the spring of 1982, and I saw a brochure or flyer in my hotel lobby advertising the Fest which was on the weekend that I was in town. Knew nothing about Jazz Fest prior to this, but it sounded great and off I went. I don't remember too much of the weekend, but I did see Chuck Berry perform, and not on a big stage either....but on a smaller more intimate stage (those days are gone for the BNAs!) Afterward, he came down and was signing autographs. I also remember being blown away by the Gospel Tent, and to this day, it is my favorite part of Fest. It was 10 years till my next Fest, in 1992. I guess there were so many other things happening in my life, and so many places were better the further back you go, that it took 10 years (I don't know why and I could kick myself for the lapse)....BUT after 1992, I got delightfully hooked, and have been to most fests since, and my love affair with New Orleans really took off!! Used to go to fest for one weekend, and then stay for awhile after that just enjoying the city at my leisure. Of course, one weekend wasn't enough and for the past few years, I do the whole enchilada. I have discovered so many other wonderful things (Patry for one) as a result of the Threadhead forum. I wouldn't miss a fest for anything now.:D

My first fest was in 1980,while I was in college. My brother had moved to New Orleans recently and my college roomie and I started making regular visits. It was such a different festival back then, but still uniquely New Orleans. I'd never heard most of the music before, except Dr. John and The Nevilles.

Hearing stuff like Zydeco for the first time, and seeing people dancing with abandon just pulled me in. I was hooked.

Haven't made it every year, due to finance, family, work, all the usual bullsh*t. But make it to as many as I can.

Once I hooked up with PDKK, I started coming more regularly. And now with these wonderful Threadheads, I've been coming a lot more.

Seeing new and old Threadhead friends is the icing on the cake for me!

Primarily because of a couple of great local clubs, we became fans of Clifton Chenier, Nevilles, Buckwheat, Nathan, Preservation Hall, Wynton, Dirty Dozen and Beausoleil even before seeing any of them in La. Five trips to New Orleans during the 80s made us fall in love with everything else about the city. A friend who lived in the quarter pleaded for us to come and stay for Jazz Fest but we never did make it before he moved. When a flyer showed up in our mailbox in 93, and listed other favorites we had come to know from various New Orleans compilation records such as Irma Thomas and Marcia Ball, we decided finally to make the pilgrimage. Wowville immediately.

This year will be our eighth Jazz Fest and 2nd FQF.

1988. My heart was broken, I was close to a total breakdown, and a very close friend called me, said "get a super saver flight, come on down first weekend, New Orleans will help you forget that ass. We'll have a great time at fest".
Well, three and a half weeks later,my friend picked me up at the airport, and as we drove he said, " in 10 minutes you'll either love it or hate it- but you'll know in 10 minutes". That was the most healing experience I've ever had, changed my life, and oh by the way- I still love New Orleans. Always will.

My First Fest was 1985. I went to see the Neville Brothers at a club in Hollywood and a young attractive woman was standing outside the club handing out flyers. The woman was Nancy Covey and she had a new business, Festival International. She said come along with me to New Orleans and see the Neville's play at Jazz Fest. The cost was $400. for four days, air, hotel and Fest. I went and had a blast. Nancy still does trips to Jazz Fest (a little more now days). That Fest in 1985 I will never forget. I went to go see Sippy Wallace perform and close to me sat Bonnie Raitt. Sippy put on one of the best shows I've ever seen, I was hooked. Years later I went to go see Bonnie Raitt at the Hollywood Bowl and she did a Sippy Wallace song. The same song we saw in New Orleans (Woman Don't Advertise Your Man).

I'm not sure I had even heard of Jazzfest much before I decided to go in 1998. When I was there I met some members of the PetDeKat Krewe on a Galactic show on the Riverboat (Little Beth was the first one I met) and I hung out with many of them online throughout the year, and I realized I could be going every year. And so I haven't missed a Jazzfest since.

Came down to New Orleans in 1981 to go to grad school @ Tulane. Didn't know anything about New Orleans or Jazz Fest. The only thing that I knew was that there was a spot open for me to teach and get my degree and if I headed South, I would get here.
One of the undergrad alums had a booth for the first weekend and wanted to know if I wanted to split it with him. I sold fused glass jewelry the first weekend. The Contemporary Crafts coordinator asked me if I wanted to sell my blown work the second weekend and I've been doing it every year since!!! I now have the longest consecutive tenure in the Contemporary Crafts section. :D :D

Robbie, great story. As you know, but for the benefit of some others, Nancy is married to Richard Thompson (playing this year, 2nd weekend). Nancy met Richard while she was running McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, one of the all-time best places in Los Angeles to see a small, intimate concert.

Fell in love with New Orleans about a year and 1/2 earlier....a bartender told me about the fest in 2004. In 2005, I found out Lenny Kravitz was playing and that was it...I was hooked! Joined this board for info...and the rest is history. Can't believe it's my second home now. Fate is incredible :)

1994 for me. For years, I ran tour busses from Mobile to the Fairgrounds. That meant just coming for the day and returning home.

We stopped doing the busses after 2002, when they decided we couldn't park on site any longer. The logistics became too much of a hassle.

But I kept coming on my own, picking certain days or combination of days, spending the night sometimes and doing the night shows once in awhile.

After all of these years, I'm booked for both weekends and the daze between for the first time. I can't describe how much I'm looking forward to it.

Alright all you Parrothead haters, get ready to throw things at your computer. In February 2002, I was supposed to accompany Mr. Soul to Hawaii for a business trip. Well, my Grandmother passed away the day before I was supposed to get on the plane, so I didn't get to go to Hawaii. Feeling very deprived and in need of some r & r, I rallied my girlfriends and told them I needed a "BIG" girls weekend. Someone was checking Buffet's schedule and called me and said "Buffet's playing the first weekend in May in New Orleans at something called Jazz Fest". So, all the girls booked flights and we headed to NOLA. First time I ever saw the Nevilles was that Sunday. Closing Fest. I knew in my heart I'd be back. I was hooked. Nobody else on that trip was as enthralled as I was, but I talked about it for months & months. Finally, in '05, Mr. Soul said to me "I'm sick of hearing about it, I want to experience it for myself"....so off we went. Luckily, Mr. Soul loved it as much as me, and we haven't missed a year since.....and don't plan to miss one in the future. We live for the day that our kids are old enough for us to go for the whole enchilada. I'm really looking forward to the Neville's closing this year. I really think that set in '02 was what clinched the deal for me. I've missed them since the thing. Needless to say, Buffet is just an "aside" for me now. Still love him, but will miss him if I have to choose between him and, say, Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Ingrid, etc...etc...etc....

Ideally, we'd win the lottery and we could bring them and a Nanny with us. Everyone could go to the Fairgrounds daytime. At night, Mr. Soul & I would hit the clubs and the Nanny would deal with the baby souls.... hey a girl can dream, right!

Well I loved New Orleans ever since my first trip there in the early 80's for a conference. Several more trips, including one (95 or 96?) where I had the pleasure of having brunch with a total of maybe 10 people in the place at Tip's FQ listening to Kermit on a Sunday afternoon sipping mimosas (what a sweet, mellow afternoon, we couldn't leave!) He came & sat with us & chatted for a bit. Now I was really hooked on the city and its music, and knew I'd be back many times.

Then some friends I met on a sailing trip - who I could tell had good taste in music- were raving about JazzFest. The next year, 1998, I convinced a group of people to go. Half of us were in heaven, half were pretty indifferent - two actually spent the weekend in town and went to fest for maybe an hour. (ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND???)

Then decided to go every other year, did that til 06, when Fest's incredible comeback made me so grateful I decided I'd never skip abother year. Started lurking around here before the 04 fest, slowly overcame my shyness, and joined in the madness. Now I only invite festmates who I'm sure will get it. And they do. But none of them love it as much as I do.

2005. This will be my 4th. Shortly after my wife-to-be met in 1994, she went down to Jazz Fest with some friends. She was really into music and her friends were really into getting drunk and being seen so when she came back she said next time, she wanted to go with me. Well, things happened, marriage, grad school, kids. Add to that she totally forgot our 9th anniversary. So, for our 10th she made up for it and surprised me with Jazz Fest tickets. I mean totally surprised me, even scheduling time off for me at work without my knowledge. I did find out two days earlier due to a scheduling conflict with my daughters soccer game but it was still one He!! of a surprise. Being a big Subdudes, Nevilles, Buckwheat fan already, I was hooked. We even planned on going back on day again, maybe for our 15th. Then the Army Corps engineering failures happened. This Fest will be my 6th time back since then. 3 to work, 3 to spend.

This will be the first year we bring the kids!

Wow...reading through this thread and seeing how many multi-festers there are emphasize the addictions that afflict the majority of this bored. Between JazzFest and the city herself it seems that many just can't quit our habits.

My love affair with the City of New Orleans began in 2002. She's like the other woman to me...my wife is literally jealous of my relationship to and obsession with this city. She's been down and enjoyed it but doesn't really understand what all of my fuss is about. I'm sure others in this "support group" of a bored understand what I'm talking about. You "get it".

As many times as I've visited NO I didn't lose my fest virginity until last year. I had always tried to avoid the city at its busy times but the opportunity to see Van Morrison in person in the city that I love was enough to entice me to come. I do believe I'm hooked. I'm bringing my father this year who has never been to NO. I can't wait to be able to expose him to the many treasures this city has to offer.

2005 was my first fest! I used to go the MEMphis in May previously which was during one of Jazz fest weekends. The entertainment used to be very good, but not as good now. Problems there were being frisked, NO cameras allowed! After Katrina, I wanted to support New Orleans. Since my first experience, I cannot imagine going to any other festival!! No camera hassles. I'm doing both weekends this year and I cannot wait!!

2004 was the first year -- so this year is my fifth! One sad memory was having to leave Saturday morning after first Friday in 2005 to head home for a work emergency, I cried reading all your reports on how great everything was that year.

Back to 2004, I went down with a group who thought they'd go to Fest on the first Friday, and then we'd move on to plantations, Garden District homes, cemetaries, Bourbon Street etc.

I walked past the talking coolers and across the track and thought "why am I going to plantations and cemetaries when I can do this?"

So (no slight to plantations and cemetaries, which I have now visited on other trips), I ditched the group and fested first weekend. What can you say about your first time in the gospel tent? First time you ever heard Snooks? First time you saw Irma Thomas? Kermit?

You just know you belong. And you'll be back....:)

1996 was my first Fest. Went with my girlfriend at the time in 96 and 97. Lost the girlfriend before the 98 Fest - went solo and hooked up with the Pet de Kat Krewe - met lots of great people with whom I am good friends with to this day - some of whom post on this board now regularly. Met my wife February, 2001 and we both already had plans to go to Fest, but on different weekends! Missed my first Fest when I got married in 2002. Missed another when my second son was born, but been every other year. Hopefully take the wife and kids one of these years when the kids get a bit older. Luckily, my wife is very understanding of my New Orleans addiction.

I had been in love with New Orleans long before I went to Jazzfest. In college in the seventies, we used to spend lots of time down there. My father and one of my sisters had gone to school down there, so it really predates college.

Much of my spare time had gone to going to festivals, mostly local. I worked as a volunteer for several of them including the Beale Street Music Festival. For some unknown reason, I had never heard of Jazzfest. I took vacation in late April of 1991 to visit an old girlfriend, her husband and their son, in Chalmette. We had a pleasant time visiting, but I kept seeing stuff in the newspaper and on tv about Jazzfest. I asked about it. Each day I was tortured with the names in the paper about who was playing. No fest for me, but I vowed I'd be back the next year. So, 1992 was my first fest. I've been all but a couple of years since. Back when I was single, I made both weekends most of the time, but it's been difficult to do so lately.

Any day at Jazzfest is a great day, as has been said before. I must say that since I've been active on the bored, those great days have been greatly enhanced by great friends.

I started in 80 or 81, and my future wife was quickly jealous of my "affair" too. So I had her come with me to fest in 82 and we then spent our honeymoon there in 84 (becuase she fell in love with Nola too!)

I think my first fest was 1997 - this will be number 8 or 9 and I was hooked by noon on the first day. 80 degrees, beer in hand, feeling high, and was exposed to Galactic on the blues stage for the first time. Soon after I had a softshell crab po boy and have only missed one or two fests since!

This is my 9th year festing-3rd in a row and these were the first three that I did the whole enchilada.
Fell in love with New Orleans hitchhiking across the country after leaving the other LA in '84. Went to the Super Bowl to root on my Pats (only to see them get trounced) in '85 and came back and did my first fest. I made it back for a weekend every few years through '02. I made it down for several events throughout those years between 02-05 just never fest. After the Thing I realized that I had almost lost one of the most favorite things to do and one my most beloved hangouts. :( So in '06...I was back where I belonged at the fairgrounds (also first year as a TH :D ) easing the hurt I had for NOLA and celebrating its rebirth and in '09 I look to be attending my first as a resident of NOLA..thats my story

My first year was 2002 and I have been back every year since then (and will be back every year till I RIP). The first time I went I had never even been to NOLA before...a buddy who lives down there invited me to come to the first weekend of 2002, and offered up a place to stay...I was in gradschool at UGA, so I drove down from Athens for the first weekend...needless to say I got my mind completely blown and had the time of my life...I had finals that next week, so I ended up driving back to Athens sunday night to attend to my studies...as soon as I got my papers written and my exams taken care of I was back on the road that thursday morning for (a previously unplanned) second round...

I have been fortunate to go both weekends almost every year, but last year was the first time I got the chance to just chill in NOLA between weekends...REALLY enjoyed that, so it looks like I have a nice 10 day period blocked in april/may from here to infinity!

Went to the Super Bowl to root on my Pats (only to see them get trounced) in '85 and came back and did my first fest.

I was living in NOLA then; some friends from Chicago came down and we went to the game. I started off rooting for your Pats but the game became such a blowout that I switched allegiances and cheered for it to be over quickly so we could party more. Oof, bad night now that I think about it.

Re: this thread: I had just started a job as a field engineer offshore on the rigs in April '84. Was living at the Westbank Holiday Inn for three weeks. Read about something called Jazz Fest in the paper; figured since John Lee Hooker was playing it was worth checking out. Attended '84 through '86, then a big gap (about 8 years). Been going off and on since. I'd have a hard time figuring out how many Jazz Fests I've been to.

My first was my senior year in high school, 1984. Back then it was more of a social event for us than to listen to the music, really, except for Irma and The Nevilles. Usually just went once each weekend. But never missed a year since that first. In 92 I met my husband and we both really got into to local music and since then we go as many days as possible sometimes its 5, sometimes 7. There's no other feeling in the world like walking thru those gates on that first Friday, knowing and not knowing all that you are about to experience.

My first visit to New Orleans was in 1998 with a soon to be ex-boyfriend - we came in June and I remember seeing the posters all over New Orleans. The next year (1999), I tagged along with a larger group that had been going for years - only to find out that they just went for the party scene and NEVER EVEN WENT TO THE FEST!!! I was a "virgin" and even I knew that was blasphemy! I had found the PDKK'ers online before I went, hooked up with them and had a blast - adicted in every sense of the word! I've only missed once since then - and I have brought a "virgin" every year. This year I am booked, but haven't found my virgin yet... Here's to #9!!

2003 was the first year. Girlfriend from Atlanta said we're going - I was hedging...anxious....on the fence... wasn't sure if I could rustle up the gumption to fly to Atlanta, drive to NOLA, go to a festival I had only heard about...take the time off of work...pay for it...blah blah blah. Yes I am an idiot. Yes I am ashamed to admit that I was basically forced to attend my first fest.

And the rest is history. This year is #5 (missed one b/c of grad school).

I fell in love....with the people that I've met, with the music that cures what ails you, with the entire experience. Our group has steadily grown over the years - and we keep recruiting new members.

So from being forced, to negotiating a job offer that guarantees annual additional vacation time during the last week of April and first week of May...I'll say it loud - and say it proud...I'm a Fest addict.

2003 First Fest. This was our 2nd time to New Orleans but our first getaway without our daughter who was 2 at the time. After that first Friday at the fest I knew this was going to become a yearly event! Went back that Saturday and Sunday and every year since

Year # 2 seemed to be a challenge though.... ((A 10 week old baby))....There was no way I was going to talk my wife into leaving the baby home with Grandma. So........ We took the kids! :D

I was skeptical and had never been to new orleans or anywhere close for that matter, but Amy and I had already been enjoying live music in the bay area, so I figured what the hell? When I checked the lineup for Friday and Saturday, I saw Ben Harper and Widespread as headliners those two days and was psyched!! Funny you should mention that. My family has similar instructions - when I die, half of my ashes are to be scattered at the Jazzfest Fairgrounds (the other half get scattered at the Philadelphia Folk Festival grounds).

A rough count of the 5 pages of posts (100 posts) seems to reveal only 10 or so listed the names of Big National Acts Unrelated to the Jazz/Blues root as the motivation for attending their first Fest. Even if you toss in most of the later arrivals, it doesn't add up to much more than 20%. That doesn't seem to support the BNA thesis.

So what? There are plenty of stages that cater to many different tastes. No one complained when Voodoo, a rock festival expanded their acts to include much more local talent. My friends who live in New Orleans enjoy being able to see the dreaded BNA's at a considerable savings. I didnt have any expectations when I first attended. I came. I saw and I was hooked. Big acts, "Little" acts and everyone in between. I have seen my share of clunkers both big and small but in my humble opinion, jazzfest is about great music, great food and great friends. Simple stuff.

1986. Our friend Greg had moved to New Orleans a year earlier and came home raving about this festival that take place in the spring. He also sent us tapes by the Nevilles, the Rads, and Little Queenie to get us primed. Even with detailed descriptions from Dookie G Boy, as he was now called by his co-workers there, regarding the layout, the stages, and the sheer number of different acts; I was still overwhelmed by it all. I knew about cajun and zydeco music but that didn't prepare me for Zachary Richard. I'd heard dixieland jazz all my life but never like Percy Humphrey and his Crescent City Joy Makers played it. I was so into the music, I didn't even care about the food the first few years. I thought laboring over what to eat was a total waste of time when you could be hearing Kid Sheik and his Storyville Ramblers or Snooks Eaglin....It wasn't my favorite Fest, that would come 8 years later in '94, but I'll never forget it as long as I live.

This is such an awesome thread!

My first fest was in ’97…my roommate and co-worker at the time Don, brought me to my first Radiators show in SF in March of that same year. I was having such a great time at the show that night he asked me if I’d like to join him and a group of his friends at the Jazzfest in New Orleans. One of those friends, Jon, would later become the love of my life (we have been together for 6 years). I had never heard of the Jazzfest before but thought what the heck! I'll go! And I haven’t missed one since. :)

I will never forgot my first night show in New Orleans for the 1997 fest…it was the Wed of days between (we are 2nd weekenders). We went to Benny’s to see a band called Monkey Ranch. The music, positive energy, smiles, etc in the room that night were so infectious I knew I was part of something special…and I hadn’t even been out to the fairgrounds yet! :)

After a couple years coming with my friends, my wife - who lurks round these parts - came down as part of the crew. Now we are the crew and I think she is up to her 5th. No question that it makes the addiction easier to feed!

I have to say that with the initial trip, I was drawn in by the BNA's but each year we spend less and less time at the big stages and more at the smnall stages and food stands!

My first was either 2000 or 2001, I can't believe I don't remember now! One of my close friends got married in the Gospel Tent that year and invited me down. It was very special--we had a 2nd line to the tent, decorated golf carts, and the choir and all the people in the tent sang "This Little Light of Mine" after the ceremony. Lenny Kravitz played that year too. The whole weekend I was there seemed magical in a way that's hard to explain to people. I have only missed one Fest since then.

I had been dying to get to New Orleans & the Jazzfest for several years , ever since hearing some of the Louisiana musicians that visited us regularly in RI every Labor Day weekend and other times. I almost made it in '91 when I drove down with a couple of friends for a week, but they couldn't get the time off in April for Jazzfest so we went in March, right before Easter, and had to hear everyone tell us, well y'all shoulda come for Jazzfest! D'oh! In 1992 I met my hub, Joe, who had already been to jazzfest a few times. We made a couple of trips to LA for Fest Acadiens in Lafayette and Swampfest in New Orleans, and finally made it to Jazzfest together for the first time in 1996 for the first weekend only, rented a car and stayed in Slidell. That was the year Phish was there - what a crowd! We did not go in '97 ....but in 1998 I lucked out with a work-related conference a week before fest. That same year we hooked up with the PetdeKat Krewe on the older version of this bored, and we met tons more people, including Funkkjunkie at Bonnie Raitt, plus Neen and many others. We have been every year since then, except for 2003, and it is like walking through the gates of heaven every time!

I started in 80 or 81, and my future wife was quickly jealous of my "affair" too. So I had her come with me to fest in 82 and we then spent our honeymoon there in 84 (becuase she fell in love with Nola too!)

You musta found the right girl for you sweetie!

i've been every year since 1981, missing just one, and i am still sore about that.

best one would be hard to pick, but that first fest after katrina was something. i remember the power going out during the cowboy mouth set, during 'hurricane' of course, and afterwards being part of the joyous bond that occured (and always does) between band and audiance members during their fest set. i cant say i listen to their records a whole lot, but seeing cowboy mouth at the fest is a must from an emotional as much as a musicial standpoint.

Well, last year was my first year (but, not my last) and I live in NW La. When you see me, you have my permission to kick me in the azz for waiting so long. Always thought JF would be cool, but didn't have the time off from work, money ect. to go check it out. Have been to NOLA many times in my life and always loved the place. IBROCKN and I discussed it in 06 after we watched reports about the smaller than normal crowds.
Last year we were looking for a Rod Stewart concert (don't throw things!) and found out he would be at JF. IBROCKN, Cheri, and I decided to just DO IT! The rest as they say is history.
WE GOT IT WE SO GOT IT!

...Except I remember my friends who had moved to NOLA for the music (they had no jobs, they just decided to go) were working the beer tent between the Gospel Tent and the Ray Ban stage and so I was able to get behind the barricades for the Nevilles on that final Sunday and I swear as I looked out over the flags and fans that God tapped me on the shoulder and said, "See? I told you..." and I haven't missed a year since. I got my religion in that Gospel tent that Sunday a.m., I saw and shared permagrins and danced across those fairgrounds from stage to stage, vendor to vendor all the while taking in the glorious sunshine, random acts of kindness and pure joy. They say it's never as good as your first time, but in the case of JF, it's always just as good and offers the sweet nuances of seeing that long lost lover but just once a year...

My first Jazz Fest was in 1995. I was a senior at Mississippi State and some friends asked me to come down with them for one of the weekends. I was hooked as soon as I got to Congo Square. The vibe was so much different during the Fest weekend, as opposed to other times I'd been to N.O.! We spent the evenings hanging out at either Cafe Brasil, Cafe Istanbul, or Snake-n-Jake's (if I remember correctly).

I've been back for the fest in 1996, 2001, and last year. I've already booked flights for a week-and-a-half trip from New York and will be bringing my girlfriend down for her first trip to N.O. and first Fest!

1991 was the first year for Jazzfest. I think this was to be the last big vacation before I started law school in the fall and there would be no vacations in the spring for a few years until I graduated. Well, we went almost every year in the early 90s and I remember one year I carried law books on the plane to study for a final exam scheduled for within a day or two of coming home from the fest. I’m older now and I can go to NOLA with a clear conscious and no textbooks.

2008 will be our 7th year. Our first fest was the first weekend 2001. Didn't come for a BNA, just heard great stuff from friends who had gone and wanted to check it out. Just now I went and dug out my "grids" from that year, I circled everyone we saw and have notes scribbled all over the papers. The first act we saw was someone named Kipori "Babywolf" Woods. I can remember it like yesterday,he sang this sexy song called Big Black Cadillac and he was playing guitar with his tongue. (guess he deflowered ME). We were all over the place, we saw Richard Thompson, and then saw him sit in with Beausoleil along with Sonny Landreth, then Doug Kershaw, BB King, Anders, Harry Connick SENIOR, and whole bunch of Gospel. On the way out walking to the buses we were just lucky enough to catch Clarence "Gatemouth". He was wailing away on the harmonica with this incredible energy. He had to have been 80 years old. I wrote down everything we ate too. We planned the rest of the weekend around the cubes and food. The first thing I tasted at JF was the Red Beans N Rice with Andouille sausage and seven years later it is still what I "open" with every year. In the middle of the second day, I stopped my husband and said (direct quote) "it's not just the music and the food. It's the energy. It's the crowd. I feel like we're finally surrounded by people who get it".
I was overwhelmed by that feeling. I remember when we got home telling friends..."there were 20 thousand people drinking all day long, crowded in the hot sun for hours and I didn't see ONE fight, didn't hear ONE nasty comment, everyone was just so happy to be there". I was so taken with the whole vibe just as much as the music. I remember thinking..."oh man, we've MISSED so many". I knew we wouldn't ever miss it again. The total highlight of a weekend of nothing but highlights was on Sunday. We ended the fest seeing Van Morrison. We love him and my husband is a huge fan and has the entire catalog of Van's music (huge). He was totally stoked to be seeing him so close up. We saw Dr. John together and then I scooted out to go over to the Sprint stage and check out Marcia Ball cause I'd never seen her. Van had been playing for a good half hour when I tried to make my way back. It was packed so tight and I needed to get all the way to the front but I wormed my way back (carrying cold beers of course) based on the flags I knew he was near and found my way back to him like 30 feet from center stage. We ended our first fest hugging, with tears rolling down our cheeks as Van played "Days Like This". It was perfect.

Oh yeah... I was just thrilled out of my mind with Van... Mmm mmm mmm! He was having himself a fine ol' time, too, and enjoying it as much as we were! Did you catch when Dr. John came out and played with Van? I was in heaven! I've got a Van passion... when we go to our local Irish pub, I put $5 in the juke box and play 13 Van songs... after all I figure ya gotta have some good Irish music in an Irish pub, right?

In 1982 my roommate was looking to do a southern vacation and I suggested Jazz Fest because I was a fan of 60's New Orleans R&B. 3 of us drove down from Chicago and had a great time. Surprisingly, the highlights I most remember most were not from the Fairgrounds - Dr. John and Clifton Chenier on the Riverboat President (the night reached perfection when we stood on the top deck listening to "Such a Night" as the boat returned to the dock) and listening to James Booker playing for tips at some bar near Jackson Square. Have been back to Jazz Fest more than 20 times since, as well as numerous non-Jazz Fest trips and forays into Cajun Country as well. Met my wife while cajun dancing in Chicago in 1995 and did Jazz Fest and Cajun Country on our honeymoon in 2000.

Since 1983, been to Fest everyday since 1989 expect two "weather" days and missed one weekend a few years ago. Still drove by the Fairgrounds on both "weather" days just to make sure the gates were locked. In the early years I would pick and choose my days depending on the lineup. Lived in Baton Rouge at the time and NOLA was a day trip.

1989. A friend of mine asked if I wanted to go to New Orleans for the weekend, "a music festival" was happening. Didn't miss a fest for the next (x) years. Moved up to NOLA, living there for just over a year, until Hurricane Katrina washed us out, it was cool to have the Fair Grounds in my backyard and start the day in my backyard with coffee to the first act at the blues tent :)

So is SWAG or a database analyst logging years and days of festers?

My husband and I went to our first fest in 1993. He had been talking about going for years. We finally decided to do it that year as a treat to ourselves, it was our 10th anniversary in 93 and his 40th birthday, so we figured what the hell. We have only missed 2 years since then, 1997- our third son was born the first weekend of fest and 1999 - due to budget issues. We hope to never have to miss another, some year our dream is to do the whole thing, just have to wait for the youngest one to be old enough. We have brought many people with us over the years, some still come with us, some just didn't get it, like we do. It is truly one of the highlights of our year. I have told our older sons to make sure that if they ever plan on getting married make sure it is not either weekend of jazzfest. We have seen some great music over the years and every year we are always surprised by the unexpected, like the Bobby Charles (disappointed by the no show, but wow what a show), Warren Haynes is 2006 was definitely a highlight for me, that was definitely the most emotional year for us, as for many people there. We have come to know quite a few locals over the years and that definitely puts a different spin on things.

maugie10 and I honeymooned in 2000. Just loved the place. I had been down once in college for Mardi Gras...I don't remember much. Augie had a conference during Jazz Fest 2001 and we had always wanted to go. Walked in on the second Thursday, by myself. Fais Do Do was the first stage I walked to, and I was hooked. After Augie joined me she was hooked as well. Only missed 2004 due to the birth of our middle sun a couple weeks earlier. I think the other two attended in vitro. We have been festing ever since. I love this thread. What a great read.

My brother 1st attended fest in 1989. He came home with such stories that I had to check it out for myself the next year. The one thing that hooked me was the first time I saw the Nevilles closing out the Ray Ban Stage. The following year I brought my wife and she was soon hooked. In the 18 years since I think we have missed 4 fests.
We always had large groups of friends usually 8 of us but a few years we had as many as 20 people.
During the past few years our group numbers have dwindled greatly mostly due to kids, responsibilities and life in general. My wife and I were set to attend our first fest alone this year. Then our kids decided they wanted to check out what we have been talking about all these years. They brought along 4 of thier friends and they all loved New Orleans and the fest. It was such a pleasure to introduce the next generation to New Orleans and see them appreciate everything that it has to offer. They can't wait to come back this year.

Did Mardi Gras 98, 99, and 2001. Gave Jazzfesting a whirl in 2002 and haven't missed one since. Just found out im going to be a dad for first time around April 1st of next year so Fest 09 is not going to happen unfortunately. But will be back in 2010 hopefully with baby and GF along for the greatest trip on earth. Woo-hoo.

My first was '02. Did Mardi Gras & Fest in '03,'04,'05,'06 and Fest only in '07 & '08. Hopefully, both will be included in '09!

Congrats. Perhaps Amy can give you some tips on bringing a baby to fest. Got to get those baby headphone like Nolanatalie had last year.

Lol. Very true. Amy and Jeff are going to be the ones to go to for the quality baby festing advice.

Those headphones are so great! I can't tell you how many people have asked us about them at shows. And Natalie doesn't mind them one bit. MG, your little guy or gal will be less than a month old at fest time, eh? The headphones might be a little big at that age! Natalie was almost 4 months at this year's fest. I still think you could do it if you wanted to, just keep out of sun and crowds as much as possible! Otherwise, we'll see ya next year with your little one :) Maybe we'll have another little one by then too! (2010 fest that is)

amy got me started in '02. while jeff gets credit for his organizational & motivational skills (e.g., chairs, flags, and getting us to wake up before noon), i think amy was the one who started chatting with "these people online -and all they talk about is jazzfest!"

Chris Rose, in his book "One Dead in Attic" includes a heartwarming essay about taking his infant to the fairgrounds for the first time in 1999, and having a life-changing experience during Sonny Landreth's set.

I must have been sitting close to them; that was also my first set at my first jazzfest. I haven't been the same either. Last year was our 10th anniversary fest; our group has grown from 3 to 25.

Congrats Mangoon

2002 was my first and have only missed 2007. For me, the best fest was 2006 after the "thing". All of them have been life changing in some way or another.

This will be my 4th. I remember walking through the gate for the first time thinking, "how long has this been going on and where the hell have I been?"

It was my idea? I thought Alicia talked you into it ;) Actually, I thought you'd gone before you ever went with me. We didn't get Jeff going til 03 and he must have got us going on chairs, etc the next year :)

JakNomad checking in! Hey to all my Threadhead buds!!

Next Jazzfest will be my 27th straight year!!

This is freaky. I just realized that I was 27 yo when I went to JF the first time in 1982!

BTW Amy, that Teton Valley is beautiful! In the summer, when I'm not in Austin, I'm in Warm River, fishing of course.

I accidentally discovered the fest on a short visit to NOLA in 1982. Saw a flyer or brochure and checked it out. It was in those years that I started going to Key West on vacation and was more into that then NOLA, although I had been to New Orleans a few times already and loved it. Then, there was a 10 year gap (I guess I was preoccupied with other things) and I didn't go to fest again till 1992. Have gone every year since, except 1999 and 2005. Went out of the country those years and just couldn't do both. 2005 was to Rio for Carnaval...so I had a great time for sure. But I never want to miss another....it did not feel right deep down when fest time approached and I was someplace else. Can't think of too many other places where I'd rather be. Fest is the ultimate!:D
