Oooooh, get warm AND see the dailies! Mymecca, could you run down to Santa Monica and "get warm" and take a peek at those dailies?!

It's a "brisk" 27f here in Richmond, Va. With the windchill, they say it feels like the teens. I'm not going outside, though, so ijdm. I don't venture out once it drops below the mid 50's. Quite frankly, if it's not 70 or better, I'm chilly. Mr. Soul jokes that the only place I could move that would be warm enough for me is the equator. It's football & chili for me today. Wrapped up in a blanket on the sofa. I'm officially hybernating, now.

I lived there for three years and today would be a good day for some baked spaghetti at,was it Joe's in the Fan? One of my favorite Bloodys, outside NO I have ever had was at Millie's. What is the Flood Zone called these days? Or is it open for live music?

And when it's cold in NOLA, it's REALLY cold - these old, raised houses with wood floors aren't insulated at all. I honestly think it's colder inside my house than out.

5 degrees F here. 2 degrees F when I got up to check the horses' blankets and give them some hay.
It is brisk!
Bright & sunny, though. I'll take that any day over cloudy & gray. The sun boosts my spirits. I kind of like this kind of cold, though. Low humidity!:) It gives me a chance to enjoy my down parka.
It makes me worry about all the folks who are without homes, though.

Well, it's a small world, hunh? When were you here? I was born & raised here, pretty much. I love the food at Millie's, though I've never had their bloody's. Joe's Inn is still alive & kicking. They actually have 2 spots now. The Flood Zone is no more, though. There really aren't a lot of places to go for live music in the city. We mostly venture out to the spring & summer shows outside. Brown's Island has a good season most years. That's a fun place to go and we can take the kids. But as for indoor venues, about the only thing I know of is Alley Katz. Never been there, though. It's tough with young ones. There are some smaller coffee bars where you can catch a good act here & there if you're paying attention. It's sad really. I've always said there's a lot of wasted potential in Richmond. Not really sure what the problem is, it just seems to flounder.

Haha, too funny! Maybe Natalie & I will head down for some organic free range santa crawfish monica (Jeff's off skiing). They've had almost 300 inches of snow at Jackson Hole this year and nearly that much at Targhee.

Probably in the teens here, snowing and overcast, the usual. Will be below freezing at night again this coming winter. It really is a beautiful winter wonderland. Glad I don't have to leave the house much ;)

We had a blizzard here that closed all the roads into and out of the area on Tuesday, even the interstate out of Idaho Falls. It wasn't that cold or snowy, but the wind was blowing so much it was drifting in all the roads faster than the road crews could clear them.

Brrrrrr! Thank goodness we're at 33 now. Talked to juana this am before she left nola. She now has a bigass heater in the dining room of her house and a little one in the bathroom. Said she has been warm but that she also attributes that to layered dressing-3 layers with flannel in the middle and downfilled boots. She called a while ago to say she was 50 miles south of jackson, MS and was seeing leftover snow in the median!

My apt is in an old brownstone so lots of leaks around the windows. Even the walls that face the outside of the building get chilly. I think the reason I picked the dish I did was to have an excuse to turn on the oven!

It was -14F. Going to work was brutal because the 'Cruiser just doesn't warm up inside at all. I couldn't even feel the heater on my feet. My hands went numb wearing my ski gloves.

Just for perspective. From the WeatherUnderground

Sure, it's cold in football's Pole of Cold--Green Bay, Wisconsin--where game time temperatures for today's NFC Championship Game will be lucky to crack zero degrees Fahrenheit, making it the third coldest NFL playoff game ever. Yeah, those crazy bare-chested Green Bay fans sure look pretty tough in that extreme cold, but they are total wimps compared to the people living in Siberia's Pole of Cold--Ojmjakon, Russia. The temperatures in Ojmjakon this weekend fell to -76°F, making the game being played in Green Bay seem like a summer tea party.

This weekend's -76°F reading was not very unusual for Ojmjakon (also spelled Oymyakon), which is considered to be the coldest inhabited town on earth. Ojmjakon also reached -76°F in both 2007 and 2005. The city lies in a river valley in eastern Siberia, and the cold air pools at night in the bottom of the valley, creating ridiculously low temperatures. On February 6, 1933, an absolute minimum of -67.7°C (-89.9°F) was registered in Oymyakon, putting the city in a virtual tie with the -67.8°C (-90.0°F) measured at Verkhoyank, Siberia on January 15, 1885. These are the two coldest temperatures ever measured on earth, outside of Antarctica. On January 26, 1926, a astonishing -71.2°C (-96.2°F) was measured at Ojmjakon. However, this temperature is unofficial, since the temperature was not directly measured, but obtained by extrapolation.

I read a story that a Florida team playing in Green Bay practiced with footballs taken directly out of the freezer. They lost the game anyway - guess them balls weren't cold enough. :)

Actually the Canadian Football League does that when practising for outdoor playoff games in late November. It goes without saying that if your balls are cold and your hands are numb, well it's tough to concentrate.

I concur. Cold balls lead to a very distracted thinking process.

Okay - that's not nice.....

It's cold, trying to rain/snow and who knows what the heck it will do later.....

but it's still better than the below 0 F readings that other people posted earlier.

Back in 95/96, my friend Nick, who is from New Orleans, was teaching at Harvard GSD. His son had never seen snow, and it snowed that year on Easter weekend. I had been staying at his apartment while he was in New Orleans, and my daughter who was at BU, was sick. The day Nick brought his son up to Cambridge, was the same day I was leaving. We had dinner together and my cab arrived. Nate was just thrilled with the snow and wanted to be outside the entire time... he was 7 at the time. Nick is putting me and my luggage into the cab, leaning over to give me goodbye smooch and WHACK! Nate hit him in the back of the head with a snowball... ended up going right down into the neck of his leather coat. I still find it a pretty funny scenerio but for some reason, Nick does not. WHACK! LOL A pretty good first snow experience, I'd say!

Yeah, even though his head banged into mine when the snowball smacked into the back of his head... the snow sliding down his head and neck into the back of the leather jacket and seeing the steam coming from his ears... and the fact that I couldn't stop laughing when he wanted to yell at the kid, which made me laugh all the more... still makes me laugh. I happened to mention this to him the other day, and burst out laughing... but he didn't. I don't understand... WHACK! I always wanted to WHACK him upside the head, but loved that his own kid did it, better than I ever could have! :D

WHACK!

I've never skied in powder. They don't have this out here on the East coast that I've ever seen... not in the Poconos or the Catskills or up in the Adirondacks or up in Vermont, which has been my extent of skiing... and I haven't skied in years, but the very idea of not many people out there skiing was as nice a notion back then as it is now ;)
