Hey y'all....it's freezing here but the Krewe du Vieux must go on...a nutsy satirical themed parade that starts the Mardi Gras season. It starts in about an hour in the Marigny....stumbles through the Quarter and ends on Frenchmen (where I think we'll be). Anyway, Jimmy just found a live Webcam on WDSU's site that y'all might want to check out after it gets rolling. It's going on and off right now....

Here's the parade website...check out the links to the different "krewes" for some grins:

That has always been one of my favorite parades but I have to admit I wimped out this year because it's so COLD!!! I'm wearing earmuffs to bed tonight - it's freezing.

Hope y'all had a good time - I'm sure you generated some heat on Frenchman Street! :)

Good to see you AmyHugs.. it sure didn't seem cold on Frenchman but the parade has never moved so quickly so I guess the krewes were chilly. Not as funny as the immediate post-k but I guess the early MG made for less creative time. A nice kickoff for the season and a good crowd for such a cold nite!

I caught a few minutes at the end. You would have howled Oz, they interviewed a 13 year old boy from out of town at his first Mardi Gras, who went on and on with great enthusiasm about how the best part was the huge penis on one of the floats! The rest was just "pretty good". His parents were interviewed next and said they had never seen a smile that huge on their young son! Hilarious....

Parade was a freaking blast and it really wasn't that cold. The red wine helped I"m sure. Huge crowd on Frenchmen and glad we were able to find Ken/Seefood when it ended. Later we ran into NOLA and Zydekitty too and that was a nice surprise!

Music was cool in the parade and the "floats" were freaking hilarious. My fave was "David Vitter's Family Value Meal" thing where all the walkers were wearing those huge red wigs from the Wendy's commercials. The float said something like "when one Wendy just isn't enough" and some of the people were wearing pins on their outfits that read, "You want LIES with that?" It was a scream!

That's the part I caught, too, the giant penis on a tank?? Sounds like a George Bush fantasy! Seeing that kid made me think there is hope for the youth of America. I wish I'd seen the Krewe de'Vieux parade when I was 13. I had to settle for Holden Caulfield the following year in English class.

it was a long parade this year.......one of the themes was a goof
on the Beatles ....they called it the Magical Misery tour......
i dug all the outfits lit up with neon lites....the jello krewe,
and the JAIL krew that were handing out golden bagels...
Jail stands for jewish africn injun league......
there was a guy dresses up like a norwegian, and his sign read
Norwegian Wood, and he had a huge wooden hardon....
it wasnt cold dancing all the way thru the marigny and back out...
i duge the David Vitter wendys float 2....when one wendy is not enuf...
had a great time.........i ran into hatsjazz and his lady the nite before
at dba....he said he was going to the parade but i never spotted him..

KDV was the best for my very, very firstest Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans!!! I totally grooved on the Beatles theme for the satire and especially loved the "David Vitter's Family Value Meal" sub-krewe with all of the Wendies! ;)

I also really loved seeing the very traditional use of the mules to pull the floats (how all MG floats used to locomote back in the day) and the excellent costumes.

I sat in a tree right outside of R Bar to see the parade when it began, then realized I wasn't gonna get any throws WAY up there . . . so I hung out on the sidewalk from then on. Also went over to Frenchman's Street to see the wrap-up (after enjoying some Texas-swing/honky-tonk from Gal Holiday at the Balcony Music Club) . . . and then had the great, good fortune to run into Amyloves, Jimmy and their krewe outside of d.b.a. later . . . :)

Excellent way to begin my Mardi Gras edumactation! :D
