Great minds, great minds.....because I was just reading it too and thinking about all the TH dinners we host throughout the year; Best of the Beat, MG, St. Pat's, FQF, Jazz Fest, Satchmofest, Festgiving. For the last 3 years, for each of these events, we have hosted dinners at our home for 15-60 people. I'm thinking a Sanchez set would fit right in with one of those...........

I need to find out what it would be appropriate to charge people for that. I really have no idea.

I wonder if it's different for each performer. I know Dane/Dixiegal's mom had a home concert in California.

is 20 per person too much? Too little?

I was thinking about asking Paul how it works, if he has a set fee, or charge depending how many people are there.....
(PS. Chris!!! Why in the world are you awake????)

My Mom still does that about 3-4 times a year - she basically charges enough to pay for the food and wine, and the balance goes to the performers. She never makes a profit, but doesn't have to go into her own pocket. It ends up being about $30 per person.
She had Trombone Shorty booked last year, but he ended up cancelling to go on tour with Lenny Kravitz (hmmph!). I don't think she could get him now. She did get Leah Chase, and did a whole "New Orleans theme" day.
Jenn, you have the perfect setup for that with your big backyard. My Mom does say it's a lot of work, so if you decide to do something and need a hand, let me know. :)

I've had a few at my house -- and a friend here hosted a series called "Moaning Summit" concert series in his home for about five years. We paid $20 to $25 each depending on the act. All fees went directly to the artist, and we brought our own booze and an appetizer. Usually an amazing spread!
An email went out to a mailing list, you rsvp'ed and then paid cash at the door. A volunteer committee went to help set up, collect money, help sell CD's, and clean up. The host is a performer, so he did the warm-up, which worked out well and gave him a chance to try out new songs etc.
Had a great time as our perfomers socialized with us before, during and after -- we put many of them to work laying out the food etc. They stayed at our host's home that night, and were off to their next gig in the morning.
For a performer, it was a great way to make some direct money, not have to play in a noisy smoky bar, and be very well fed and cared for while on the road. CD sales were fantastic.
If I were to take something like this on now, I would try to get the money up front from an audience. Unfortunately, unless you know all your guests VERY well, there can be those who just don't show. In this situation, we all chipped in a bit more to cover the shortfall for the artist.
