I noticed that there are not a lot of posts on Swag's priceline reporting website: http://jazzfest.swagland.com/bidding.html

Priceline generally rules for Jazzfest but it only works if we post our bids!

PLEASE post your Priceline successful and unsuccessful bids to the following:

http://jazzfest.swagland.com/bidding.html

I think most of the usual cheap hotle suspects booked the Holiday Inn way early at the 39 dollar rate. There is usually a last minute Priceline Frenzy after the schedule comes out.

I've been trying Priceline pretty regularly for the last month. 4 and 3-star, Downtown and FQ. $85. I'm getting turned down every time. It's a little early though. A lot of the best Priceline deals open up in March and April.

Hey John,
If you send me specifics of your failed bids (including date tried) I'd be happy to grid them on swagland.

chen

The point of starting this thread was to get more people like John STP to start putting up their failed results, which can help PL bidders get an idea of where to start bidding (e.g., I'm not going to start my bid for 4* at $50 if someone posted that they were unsuccessful all the way up to $85 yesterday). As we move into the late winter/early spring this information can be extremely helpful in gauging trends. Collaboration is the key to beating PL.

Swag's site and betterbidding.com are extremely helpful tools but they rely on current information.

For those of us who did not get in on the $39 deal in September, the more PL info we can get on a day to day basis, the better!

ps. I really miss the $60 Hyatt days...

No problem, Swag. I'll make sure to send e-mails from now on. I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of failed bids before I land my room!

maybe the holiday inn deal is the reason for the shortage of bids for priceline... btw I have one of the holiday in rooms booked for both weekends if someone wants to split costs , great deal for festers, more money for beer , my email is almarco@aol.com the room I have booked is thurs-mon both weekends.

A good suggestion for successful priceline bids is check out whats available on hotwire first and then try to lowball the hotwire prices. I have seemed to have good luck with that stratagy.

Hey Swag, how are ya? Wanted to know if the 2.5* FQ hotel in the Priceline results is always the Chataeu LeMoyne or what?

No guarantees.

That's the only FQ 2.5 listed on the bidding sites, but there could be another that just hasn't come up yet.

There's also a chance that PL could upgrade you to a 3*, which would be something like the Prince Conti or St. Marie.

indywaiter
01-23-2008, 02:23 PM
The 2.5 star in the FQ is NOT always the Holiday Inn Chateau Lemoyne. It is the most common to appear but NOT the only one. Also something to keep in mind is that priceline can/will bump up your star level if they have a higher star property available at your bid price. An example would be placing a $50 bid for a 2.5 star and the 3 star Hotel St. Marie is available at $50...Priceline would upgrade your bid and you will "win" the Hotel St. Marie.

You've all confirmed your reservations, right? :)

alright, swag is totally it, no doubt about it...

but let me tell ya'lls something....the past several years i decided to go to fest officially the week of, second weekend....

last year, may i boast, i got (geez i can't remember the name) a four star (i think), but it was at the foot of the boardwalk area just west of the quarter, $50 a night...i do believe that was the deal of the fest last year...

so, don't sweat bids and such, at least the price....be patient, don't bid until you know you are ready to bid, and then give it a couple of days to work out...

in my humbly honest opinion, it is entirely too early to be pricelining and expecting good results..

oh, am i cheap? no, i'm just from kentucky...which means i'm po

Back in the old days of priceline the deals began in February.

I agree that it's a little early but I have a lot of experience with PL and I can say that you never know when a deal window will open up and when it will slam shut. If no one is bidding consistently, no one will know when the deal hits. That's why we need to keep posting unsuccessful bids.

While the $39 deal is insane, I would consider any 4* FQ/CBD under $95 to be acceptable at anytime and will continue to bid accordingly.

swag
01-25-2008, 08:21 PM
No doubt, some of the best deals show up a week or two before check-in date. But there's no guarantees, and if you have Fest tickets, night tickets, and air tickets booked and paid for, waiting until the last minute can be nerve-wracking.

Best plan if you hope for one of those last-minute deals is to get something now, even if it is far from ideal, that is cancellable or refundable, just in case.

And it's never too early to try Priceline, for whatever you consider a good price. You never know when a deal will arise, and if you don't try, you'll never know when one has come up. Just don't panic this early and overbid.

KYfunkfan

yes indeed, don't panic this early and overbid....

i'm probably gonna get bit with my strategy...actually, the last two years i wouldn't have gone if it weren't for the last minute deals i got, so i guess i'm opting not to doubt my karma nor my jazz fest faith, and stickin' with the last minute deals!!!

i know i know, how could i rely so much on my "jazz fest faith"? (wink wink)

it works for me, i don't necessarily recommend it for/to others....just my 'xperience that i share..

next week the Convention center should post their convention schdule that runs thru fest. If I dont see a major convention during fest, I am going to hope that Riverside Hilton will eventually be dumping a bunch of rooms. But last year they waited intil 4/1 or so. butthen there were some sweet deals to be had.

Thanks for the info. I can't wait until 4-1 (but can close to that... my reservation is for 5/1 to 5/5) to change mine or I'll lose a first night cost to my card. My room at Baronne Plaza has a one month cancel policy...but i do have up to that time to change if a good deal comes around. Now Indywaiter (by the way thanks for your help last year on rooms) I haven't researched 3* DT or FQ so I've been hesitant to jump....Would they be all good hotels and/or better than the Baronne Plaza where we have them now? Thanks for all your support guys!

i know nothing about travelworm, and the reviews for ambassador are very mixed. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60864-d93247-Reviews-Ambassador_Hotel-New_Orleans_Louisiana.html

chen

I pulled the trigger and booked the ambassador as a back up. There is a $25 cancellation fee but I think it's worth it from an anxiety standpoint. The word on the street is that the Ambassador is kind of lame so I'm hoping it's only a backup...

stlbarb

$25 seems fair for a cancellation fee. definitely worth it for peace of mind.

indywaiter

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Mariena, you should use priceline instead of travelworm. The Renaissance Arts has been receiving winning bids of $70 with dates in the first weekend. It is a far superior hotel than the Ambassador. If you can cancel your reservation you should consider using priceline. Second weekenders dont have this luxury. It seems to be more crowded second weekend thus no deals. The Ambassador is not a great hotel but the location is what I do consider good. The beds are terrible and the walls are paper thin. I think I would rather stay at a nice airport hotel at $50 per night than the Ambassador at $82.

I figured things might start to come down at least a little in March but prices keep increasing on sites like easyclicktravel.com and hotwire.com for second weekend. Good thing I booked a backup.

I still have my fingers crossed that things will come down in mid to late April but with prices still in the high $200's for 4*s on the opaque services, it's getting a little scary...

I didn't go last year, was it similar then?

Hey now, everybody! First time posting in awhile... Looking forward to JF '08! I thought this might be a good thread to post this question in: I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to where we might look to book a "backup" reservation at this point for 4/30-5/5. I know there aren't a whole lot of great options out there right now, and I'm definitely still optimistic about a PL deal coming through, but... I'm starting to think I might be wise to try to have at least some sort of room in hand, lest my krewe and I get stuck sleeping in the back of A Cheap Guy's car. Any tips/suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

casting spell now. dang, i need to borrow 1/2 cup of newt tails from someone.

once it starts rolling it will be fine. once a good rate comes along, 1/2 the people will be giving up old reservations - then those hotels will have to cut their rate to fill those now empty rooms. so it may come in waves.

they're just waiting to see how many late planners they can get at 200-300 per night.

We should definately start seeing deals for 2nd weekend by the end this week or early next week.

I've been able to book a room up until 5/2, but it's been a problem after that.

The Hilton should be dropping rooms soon, unless of course the convention is being held there

We stayed there two years ago - it was really nice, upscale, marble baths, robes, fab beds. Good location. We liked it a lot. All the employees were great. It was the first year after the you know what so they were short of staff and told us from day one they might not be able to provide their usual service but we didn't care. I tried $65 for 4* in Downtown for 5/3, $72 for 4* in FQ, and $78 for Boutique in FQ/DT.

It looks like alot of Hotels are available. I noticed that Priceline still had rooms available at bookrate for the 2nd Weekend for the Intercontinental, JW, Sheraton, Hilton, Wyndham, Westin, Omni Royal, Renaissance. So I really think its just a matter of time now. If these big hotels still have rooms at this point, there eventually gonna drop 'em

That second weekend is PACKED. Many hotels are sold out and the properties that are available cost a fortune.

Priceline will eventually work but at what price? For that second weekend its going to have to be in the triple digits per night. I still suspect that first weekend will open up.

If I was in this position I would book what ever nights I could on priceline in the French Quarter or CBD (1st weekend through 2nd thursday). Then second weekend book a room via priceline at the airport/metairie/west bank and rent a car for those days.

I've been going on Priceline every day for the past 3 weeks. They currently have 6 or 7 4* Hotels in the FQ or Downtown but they are all at book rate. I've been using Priceline and Hotwire for the past 6 years, I've never seen it this tight. Maybe they're catching onto us Festers. The line-up for the second weekend isn't that strong, maybe its the conventions causing these problems. Eventually things have got to give.

No Dice! (continuing to keep da faith though...)

the difference is the price is most likely due to the difference in the dates.
so you would book at 115, but not at 122?

i was thinking it couldnt be as bad as everyone says for 2nd weekend rooms.
but yikes, nothing decent under $200 using conventional methods of booking.
and not a lot of choices at any price. it really is booked up tight. although i did not go to individual websites for the hotels. they may have rooms that are not coming up on mass searches for may 1- may 5th. :(

i think the hotels may be holding out for the doctors convention coming to town - especially since they will book past may 5th (hotels get more nights).
you may not see bargain rates for 2nd weekend until much closer to May 1.
they may never appear. this could be the best rate you'll find. its a fest version of Deal or No Deal. you have to be willing to gamble. and definitely have another reservation that you can cancel. :)

easy for me to say, i book during the summer for the next year. book early, book often.

Yes, it's the dates. Priceline averages things out. Hypothetically (just an example), if a hotel will sell a room for 4/25-4/30 for $85, but for 4/30-5/05 for $145, then a $115 bid for 4/25-5/05 will succeed. But you'd need to go all the way up to $145 to get those 4/25-5/05 dates alone.

you could send them flowers, but i doubt you'll see that deal again next year.
it was most likely a mistake by the marketing department - not aware of the dates.

hey stlbarb... I think you are right in your assumptions. I have never had this kind of problem with hotel options. Fortunately, I do have a backup... I'm just not super-wild about it.

I'm a little confused about your post though. When you said "this is the best deal you may find" were you referring to a specific deal? In the Jazzfest Deal or No Deal I'm ready to make a deal!! :) I would definitely love to book at $115 or $122, or anything even in that ballpark. I have tried to Priceline every other day but have [obviously] been unsuccessful. Are you aware of a deal that I have missed? Tks.

i was referring to the 122 deal for 4/30-5/5, but i guess that bid was not accepted? (honestly, i'm not that familar with the bidding process). i was sticking my nose in. dont want people to wait for those $89 rates that may never come, and end up paying $225++.
but then again, if it is the doc's convention is taking 8000 (big IF here - no facts) of the 24-27000 rooms, its quite possible many of them will cancel. (i know a little about travel and a little about doctors) but i would expect those cancellations to be very last minute. how late can you cancel your backup?

No, I WANT you to stick your nose in! Advice/suggestions ALWAYS welcome. Unfortunately I did not win my $122 bid. Fortunately, I have pretty much up till the 29th to cancel my existing res., if need be, so I will continue to investigate.

i subscribe to usatoday daily travel news eamils and this was one of the articles attached today (4/8/08).
its a nice blurb about jazzfest, but this is more advertising, could generate more people looking for rooms. it does warn rooms are hard to come by. see below.
http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/2008-04-08-new-orleans-jazz-fest_N.htm?csp=Travel

Rooms in New Orleans during the festival are at a premium, with many people settling for lodging on the Mississippi Gulf Coast or in other areas of Louisiana. The airlines do now announce the availability of flights, said spokeswoman Michelle Wilcut — "just say it will be crazy, busy and packed."

swag

Yes, rooms are at a premium, but I'm not sure it's at the extreme of needing to stay an hour or more out of town. Even for 2nd weekend, Hotwire has a 2* for $82 out by the airport. Not a great location or quality by any means, but likely preferable to Baton Rouge or Gulfport.

I do agree on the flights - 2 weeks out, fares for prime days are as high as I ever recall seeing.

so many hotels require 3-4 night minimums, but i guess the staggering of dates hits saturday night the hardest. that's a shame.

isnt it a hassle to switch hotels, especially on a fest day?
packed & out of your room by 11 or 12. travel to new hotel. try to check in &/or store luggage before fest, after fest finish checking into hotel.

not my idea of fun, but i'm sure you all travel with less crap than i do and keep it more organized in your room. and i hope no one hates standing in line as much as i do - real negative trait.

Barb has a point.

2 nights at the Hilton at $55 with tax on PL is $135. Add in the $25 change fee on travelworm for the Ambassador and we're up to $160. Finally, you have to add the additional $99.37 for the sat. night at the Ambassador. The total is $259.37 for the stay. Compare that with keeping the Ambassador for the whole stay, which is $298.12.

Here's the question - is saving $38.75 worth the hassle of getting up, checking out of the Hilton and lugging my sorry ass down the street on Saturday morning to check-in at the Ambassador?

The Hilton is much nicer, but I still need to think about this a little.

Hopefullly Sat. night will open up too so I don't have to make this decision.

and if there are two of you involved, its a savings of $19.38 each for a couple of hours of work & lost festing (assuming the work is shared ;) )

if you're back up plan was 200+ a night, then definitely worth changing hotels to get that low rate for a couple of nights.

I realize you can only post what others report. In fact, I started this thread to encourage people to report to you because that's the way we all win. I was just hoping the person who got that deal would jump on this thread and say, "hey that was me and YES, I got that deal!"

Honestly, the 4/30-5/4 Hilton win at $72 is suspect. The Hilton shows sold out for sat night and it is doubtful that Hilton would open up rooms only through opaque services where they make little profit. Yes, it is conceivable that a 4 night stay is required but until we get a couple more wins for Sat. night, I'm not convinced it's legit.

Did you know of someone who actually got Saturday night via Priceline? Priceline OFFERS the "happy with ..., extend your stay" page even when no dates are actually available to them (and you) at any rate.

"Honestly, the 4/30-5/4 Hilton win at $72 is suspect. The Hilton shows sold out for sat night and it is doubtful that Hilton would open up rooms only through opaque services where they make little profit."

Well I HAVE actually scored on Priceline at hotels whose own sites showed sold out for the night(s). Why, I can't guess, maybe they were slower to update their own system than they were to dump the opaque rooms. Should mention that this was for other chains (Marriott, Hyatt) and not in New Orleans.

Also, a reminder: the hotel checkout and checkin times may not synchronize conveniently with bellhop baggage claim lines. Something to think about if you don't look forward to early rising on Fest days.

Could someone explain the 'calling Priceline and extending your stay at the quoted price' thing to me?

From PL FAQ:

Can I add nights to my hotel reservation?

The simple answer is, YES!

Name Your Own Price ® customers can add nights to Accepted offers right from their Itinerary Page, provided the following criteria are met:

Nights can only be added up until 11am on the day of check-out (provided the hotel allows same-day bookings, otherwise the deadline is midnight the night before check-out);
Take advantage of available rates by booking within 120 days of the original offer;
Total stay does not exceed 21 nights;
You have not already requested additional nights for this trip; and
The hotel you are holding a reservation with allows priceline to make reservations for additional nights.

How It Works

We will book your additional nights as a new reservation and charge the credit card you originally used for the cost of the additional nights requested plus Taxes and Service Fees. Customers who place a request using their profile will be unable to add nights if the credit card information originally used has been removed.

Terms and Conditions

The number of additional nights you request cannot exceed the number of nights in your original reservation and you may only add nights to the beginning or end of your stay. If your priceline reservation is for more than one room, nights will be added to all rooms. You are unable to add nights to a single room of a multiple room reservation. If your request is accepted you may have to check-out of your original room and check back in to a different room.

Remember, additional hotel room nights reserved through this link cannot be changed or cancelled by priceline or the hotel you receive.

Click here to return to your Itinerary Page and see if your offer qualifies to add nights!

If the option to add nights to your existing Name Your Own Price ®reservation is not available, OR you selected your hotel from our list of available properties instead, you have the following options:

1) You can place a new Name Your Own Price® request through our website for the additional nights; however, you may receive a different hotel since we cannot guarantee that you will receive the same property;

2) Book your hotel at a discounted rate - keep in mind that the rate available may not be the same as what you paid originally and availability is not guaranteed

"We're sorry

We were unable to fulfill your request for additional nights at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. Your credit card has not been charged for the additional nights you just requested."

If anybody does extend their booking, please post it.

After scoring the Hilton 4/26 to 4/30 for $66.00/night, I got anxious and decided to see about booking a Hotel thru Priceline for that Sunday night (5/04) only as I had the option of extending my stay till a 5/04 checkout. I tired at $66.00 and didn't get it, but ended up getting for $70.00/night.

With that I extended my hotel stay until 5/04 online. Unfortunately they came back with a counteroffer of $78.00/night and I took it. You can extend your stay either online or by phone.

In summary: Hilton 4* DT/FQ/GD
4/26 - 4/30: $66.00/night + tax = $315.14
4/30 - 5/04: $78.00/night + tax = $371.22
5/04 - 5/05: $70.00/night + tax = $ 88.48
Total Price = $774.84 / 9 nights
= $86.09/night including tax via Priceline

It's great to have this behind me, even though there will be deals still out there. Hang Tight Threadheads!

Wow..I thought I knew priceline pretty well but this whole extending of stay has opened my horizons...

The problem is I requested to extend it for two days 5/3-5/5. I was rejected and now they will not let me request an extension until 5/4. Wish I had know about that...but what the heck...this whole year has sure been a great learning experience

You can still bid thru Priceline for the dates you need, just not thru your existing reservation. Even if you get a different hotel, you should be in the
same general are of Downtown or the French Quarter. Be Patient!

Exactly the same thing happened to me Seadog.

I got the Hilton, 4/30 to 5/3 at $55, then read on board about extended stay deal... when I tried it, thursday, no rooms had opened up yet so I was denied. Then friday I couldn't bid again because it hasn't been past my 24/48 hours or whatever.

I even called Priclenie directly and they confirmed it was a one shot deal for the extended thing but that I could try 1) using my same email with a new card which would equate to a NEW bid or 2) reregister under a different email... neither worked. The site must recognize you by address and name not email or card info.

Oh well, now I sit patiently by my inbox waiting for Priceline to graciously tell me I can bid again... who thinks this isn't fun and, as I just woke up because I worked midnight last night, thank god for baily's and coffee.

Well, I tried a new bid at up to $96.00 for two days ( I can't bring myself to have a change of Hotels both Saturday and Sunday...)

I was able to sneak in a free bid by adding the garden District and requesting only a 4 star...but no luck.....sigh.

If I knew I could get the Hilton, I would bid for just Saturday night as right now I am still sitting w a hotel that is pushing $175.00 for Saturday night.

What do you all think,,,Should I attempt a Saturday only bid???

I've been weighing the same options... it would kinda suck to move for one night only.

But then, how could they not be able to extend for sunday night when we get there??? Wouldn't that be odd...

But then, what if you get a different hotel on Saturday and then yet another hotel on Sunday... two moves we can handle, three and my Phillip will kill me.

But then, what if I bid now and don't get anything then stuff opens tomorrow and I can't try again for 24 (?) hours? And then it goes back and forth like that for days... I just keep missing the proverbial boat as it were?

I just don't know and I don't think I've helped... My fist instinct is to hold off but I don't want to influence anyone decision since I can't even make one of my own.... and I'm obviously a raving, lunatic.

Hey, the worse that could happen is I spend over $200 a night for the last two at the riverside or somewhere else...

But then, with the $55/night great deal I got the first three and the fact that I'm even in New Orleans for JazzFest at all, how bad would that be???

Aren't you glad you asked??

I am going to wait a day or two and see if anyone reports scoring the Riverside then try to jump in.

I'm bored so here's a priceline tip for anyone who cares:

In New Orleans, there are 7 zones:

Downtown - Convention Center (DT)
French Quarter (FQ)
Garden District (GD)
Metairie - Harahan (MH)
New Orleans Airport (MSY)
New Orleans East (NOE)
New Orleans West Bank (NOW)

Of these zones, only 2 have 4* hotels - DT, FQ. Therefore, you have 5 free rebid zones for 4*hotels in new orleans. This means that you can bid many, many times on a four star hotel without having to wait 24 hours.

The way to get multiple bids on priceline is to close your browser after each bid and start your bid over. This will reset your selection. Assuming you are targeting the Hilton (which is in DT) but you don't care if you end up in FQ, here's an example of the first 32 bids (you can get a lot more). Remember, close your browser after each rebid:

1st bid: DT
2nd bid: DT,FQ
3rd bid: DT,GD
4th bid: DT,MH
5th bid: DT,MSY
6th bid: DT,NOE
7th bid: DT,NOW
8th bid: DT,FQ,GD
9th bid: DT,FQ,MH
10th bid: DT,FQ,MSY
11th bid: DT,FQ,NOE
12th bid: DT,FQ,NOW
13th bid: DT,GD,MH
14th bid: DT,GD,MSY
15th bid: DT,GD,NOE
16th bid: DT,GD,NOW
17th bid: DT,MH,MSY
18th bid: DT,MH,NOE
19th bid: DT,MH,NOW
20th bid: DT,MSY,NOE
21st bid: DT,MSY,NOW
22nd bid: DT,NOE,NOW
23rd bid: DT,FQ,GD,MH
24th bid: DT,FQ,GD,MSY
25th bid: DT,FQ,GD,NOE
26th bid: DT,FQ,GD,NOW
27th bid: DT,FQ,MH,MSY
28th bid: DT,FQ,MH,NOE
29th bid: DT,FQ,MH,NOW
30th bid: DT,FQ,MSY,NOE
31st bid: DT,FQ,MSY,NOW
32nd bid: DT,FQ,NOE,NOW

There are many, many more.

In this way, you can bid in increments of just couple of dollars, without ever running out of bids.

This should work. Clear your cookies, close and restart your browser, use a new email & card, and you can bid. If you don't have another card, then generate a one-use online number from your card's website. Though I think this violates PL rules (or used to), lots of folks do it but surprised that PL recommended it.

My only other advice to folks still trying is this - don't fracture your stays too much. Splitting a 10 nighter into 5+5 is fine, but try not to leave yourself with a single night or 2 night stay to fill. Some hotels have minimum stays and you'll block yourself from getting in.

Their calendar shows no rooms Saturday May 3; Monday and Tuesday after are also blocked. Surprised that they show Sunday available. Suspect convention holds.

FYI, when I called Hilton Reservations to confirm my 5/1 - 5/3 rooms, I asked Lolita (in Houston btw) to check and see if I could book at rack rate for Saturday night. She told me that they were booked; no rooms of any type available. I bailed on waiting for the Hilton and booked a 3* on Hotwire (BW Landmark - Metairie).
