Once again it seems to be the lack of leadership that stands in the way!

Bumping this up cause it got lost in all the shooting traffic. Great news for the Ninth Ward, if only anyone was listening!

Thanks! I agree that this story needs more legs. Especially because it refutes a lot of the conventional wisdom on how much effort it would take to get the 9th habitable again.
"The finding contradicts the common perception that the neighborhoods are so damaged that they need to be rebuilt from scratch, said urban planners who conducted the survey.
"The structural integrity of the buildings, even in the most devastated areas, are in much better condition than has been reported,"

Thank you Blitz, for this post. This is the first I hear of it, and the story is a week old. This is wonderful news, and it is so good to read something positive concerning rebuilding. Wouldn't it be nice if the mayor and the state and federal officials (like the president! HA!) heed the findings of this report, and start to rebuild the Lower 9th? How about spreading these upbeat findings to those residents still scattered across the nation, and give them hope that their neighborhood can be restored. When I was last visiting N.O., I realized that not all of the neighborhood was demolished. The areas closest to the canal were gone...but a good portion of the Lower 9th still had the structures and I saw several trailers which was very encouraging. I do not trust the powers that be when it comes to rebuilding this district. It should not be written off. But the officials would have the world believe that it might not be able to be saved...and the last thing I want to see is gentrification and realtors and big money getting their hands on this very special neighborhood.
