Haydel's Bakery on Jeff Hwy.
http://www.haydelbakery.com/
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of their fine products.
But don't wait till the last minute, because they get insanely busy and hard to get a hold of, the closer it gets to Mardi Gras.
That said, we bought a king cake from Rouse's over the holiday, and it was pretty darn good. Not great, but definitely tasty. :)

Of course, this is a "why we have vanilla and chocolate" question, but cream cheese is the best. So there.
The reason I listed the unlikely Ambrosia bakery is that, for people who like chocolate, they swear by it.
I put them a rough order of where I'd go to first, but I've been to them all, and as you get closer to Mardi Gras, it's hard to get in the door.

Perfect timing. We need to order one for a Mardi Gras dinner we are hosting.

Had a Rouse's the other day and it was really good and fresh. All the others mentioned are fine too. Haydel's is probably my personal fave.
A fresh plain one is damn good, but I'm a sucker for the cream cheese filling too. And apple ain't half bad....

I'll probably ending up ordering it on the 28th so that I know it'll arrive during the week, so I can bring it in the next day.
They all do look good. I had gotten one from Randazzo about 5 years ago and had no complaints, but I couldn't remember the name. I got a feeling I may end up with them or Haydel, but I'm afraid I may be tempted to get some of their Cajunnoli as well.

Absolutely, as long as it is fresh. After a day or so, they get kind of stale and inedible. Sort of like a cinnamon-y pastry topped with frosting and colored sugar.

For many, many years, they were sold unfilled. And I still love 'em plain!! For someone eating it for the first time I would try plain (traditional)

I understand that if you eat the baby, he won't give you any calories and will kick around your colon on the way out.

You all need to check out the Ambrosia Bakery in Baton Rouge! Not only do they make a great King Cake, but they make a Zulu Cake as well that has chocolate chips and coconut inside! <ambrosiabakery.com>
The Zulu Cake
http://ambrosiabakery.com/images/zulunoborder.gif (http://www.bakesmartonline.com/ambrosia/selectproduct.php?sub=King%20Cakes) The Zulu Cake is the most popular version of our King Cake.
It is a delicious King Cake filled with cream cheese, chocolate chips, and coconut, then topped with hot chocolate and toasted coconut.*Also available without coconut.
This King Cake was developed in honor of the Zulu parade, which precedes the Rex parade in New Orleans on Mardi Gras day.
I made this post last year and got a chorus of "YYRs" about it!
It was terriffic and there shipping was totally on the ball! Can't wait for this year, may have to order two!

Just checked their website and found the Zulu is now listed simply as Chocolate Coconut Cream Cheese king Cake. I wonder why they changed it, but it still looks just as tasty!

YYR. Maybe that word Zulu is a little scary to the suburban Baton Rougeans. Just wait till I invent the Huey Newton King Cake! Anyway, it would be well worth the investment, for the 5 minutes it would last at the party.
=======
Maybe I will send one to my friend Matt Watroba up there. He needs some cake.

Instead of a king baby, you find a .45 slug? Maybe the lawyers got involved somehow?
You know Matt, too? He briefly did his show at my station <wemu.org> between stints at <wdetfm.org>!
And if you know Matt, while he most definitely DOESN'T need some cake like the rest of us, this time of year he NEEDS some cake!

I'm no expert, but in my very humble opinion, once you've had the ones filled with cream cheese, the plain ones are just very blaahhh. Haven't tried the apple filled. May have to give it a go this year. Preferrably the low cal kind!;)

Sorry to hear that yours was overdone! My only problem with the Zulu cake was that it was so incredibly rich I could only eat a little bit and I wanted to really pig out! I noticed the Ambrosia Bakery also has a Praline Cake w/wo cream cheese. Looks mighty yummy! Anybody tried one??

I really like plain myself. Just enough sugar in the bread to activate the yeast and a modest glaze. No cinnamon, cream or fruits.
But at work today they had a cake filled with cream cheese and raspberry. Godz it was wonderful. And huge, over 2 feet wide. And I got the baby. So I gotta buy for Monday...
Here's a story. When I worked in NO we had donuts or pastries almost every day, and KCs in season. One of the fellas we worked with always ate but never bought. I think his wife only allowed him enough money for gas to get to work, and he did have 5 kids. No big deal. One day when he was working the night shift alone we left him a 3" piece of cake with the baby in it. Next morning we found about half of it gone with the baby sticking halfway out, LMAO.

Cheesecakes & More. Two locations, and for good or ill, one location is in my office building downtown, the other is about six blocks from home. Excellent fresh breads and pastries, best in town but pricey $$$...

Mine arrived earlier today... the icing was in a bag with instructions, and 3 containers of the sugars... at least the icing and sugars aren't sticking to the plastic wrap! I guess that's why they are doing this now... but the baby is inside the cake.
