View Full Version : Anyone want to see Grace Potter and the Nocturnals at this years fest?

I emailed their manager to see if there was any chance of them making this years fest. He replied that they really want to play and that I should appeal to the Festival organizers to request them.

I know I could make a single request, but I gotta believe that there are others here who might have more direct lines of communication.

So, who would like to see them this year?

And, who knows the best way to communicate that to the powers that be?

I'd go see her just for that reason ;)

absofudginglutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are one of the hottest new acts in the business and are beginning to garner all the accolades. The festival would benefit from having them for sure, but they should come on down and play a night show at tips or soemthing even if the festival doesn't invite, or can't accommodate them this year!!

If so sign me up!!!! and send it to the powers that be.

One of my favs, Los Lobos has been trying for years and always gets turned down

David, Louie and Cesar talked with me about this when they played with Taj months ago. Something about politics and the whos whos...you think?

Well, I pulled this off of the faqs page:

"The Festival respectfully limits applicants to bands living and working in
Louisiana, and those bands who lived in Louisiana up until Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita, but have not yet been able to return home. The mission
of the Festival is to preserve, perpetuate, and promote the music and
culture of New Orleans and Louisiana."

They obviously make exceptions for the BNA's. Just depends on whether you are a big enough BNA I guess.

While this might be true, they played fest often back in the early nineties.

Hell Yea!

I had a last-minute change in plans and missed MonkeyBall but caught GP open for Galactic Saturday night. I didn't care for the hip-hop Galactic live as much as I like the new disc, but Grace fronted Galactic for one song and it was toe-curling hot! She did Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" while squirming on her knees in a short silky dress <oink>.

Youve been learnin, baby, I bean learnin,
All them good times, baby, baby, Ive been yearnin,
Way, way down inside honey, you need it,
Im gonna give you my love,
Im gonna give you my love.

Wanna whole lotta love?
Wanna whole lotta love?

Grace Potter is on Hollywood Records which is owned by the Disney Evil Empire. They must do business with AEG.

In an ironic twist to this thread, Los Lobos is also on Hollywood Records.

I could swear they played the fest in 2002. I believe it was the first Friday and were before or after Blues Traveler or maybe before the String Cheese Incident on the Acura Stage.

I should have checked Swag's amazing website first. Los Lobos played on the Acura Stage on Friday, May 2, 2003 just before Robert Randolph (that was a smokin' jazzfest set) and Ben Harper. The link is here:

http://jazzfest.swagland.com/cubes/2003/20030502.html

Me thinks that my luck in attending many years of the fest are bluring my memory. What a good problem to have!!

They actually last played the JF in 2003, after Good Morning Atzlan was released.
They played at the Acura stage.
The day before that, Los Lobos performed at the International Festival of Louisiana in LaFayette.

David Hidalgo appeared with Elvis Costello at Jazz Fest as a member of "The Pickups" a couple of years ago, and also played with Warren Haynes at a night gig.

Maybe the money isn't there for an entire band to go to New Orleans and play the JF unless they can pick up some other good paying jobs in the area.

BTW, Los Lobos played during Jazz Fest at H.O.B. in New Orleans on Cinco de Mayo in 2006. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue opened/ Guest spot by Terrence S.

After that, they will be independent artists.

I would not go to see Grace Potter & The Nocturnals at Jazz Fest.

However, I do think they would be a good fit for the Fest. I don't see why they wouldn't be invited at some point.

Sounds cool! Haven't heard it, though. What is it called? I have a young niece, so I'm always on the lookout for new stuff for her.
BTW, Los Lobos also did a children's recording in 1995 with Lalo Guerrero. It's called "Papa's Dream." Loads of fun, it has narration tracks between each musical track. It was one of my daughter's favorites as a child.

Would love to see Grace and the gang second weekend!!! Saw them on a side stage at The Woodlands before a Dave Matthews Band concert about 2 or 3 years ago...been a fan ever since. Got to meet her and the band, and they were all great!! Haven't been able to see them since. If nothing else, someone should book them for a night show!!!

well, i have no idea who grace potter is but sure, bring her on. now, i would like to ask if an act with a similar name, chris potter, might be considered....he has played with the acclaimed david holland band for some time, (he was NOT in the band when they played the fest several years ago, an hour i count in my all time top 10 hours at the fest over the last 20+years). his albums with him as leader are all quite groovy.
that leads me to wonder about the inclusion of bna and the almost bnas of the world-is there much consideration given to the wishes of the truly involved fans (such as on forum, sponsered by the fest themselves). essentially, do online petitions really carry any weight? if so, count me in for los lobos one more time. hey, if panic and little feat can show up regularly, it would seem to be time for dem wolves too.

Chris might have a better answer to this. Nonetheless, with the line up announcement a week or two away, the vast majority of acts are surely booked already.

01-16-2008, 02:40 PM
yeah, obviously whatever the line up is has already been determined for the most part for this year. i was really referring more to subsequent years, and curious as to the 'culture' of determining bna placement. some go over better than others. i wonder what bnas over the last few years are deemed 'mistakes never to be considered again', if any, either for the quality of performance or general difficulty. as a general rule, i dont care too much about who the bnas are, but understand that is a huge drawing card for many. understanding that one fan's love is another's hate and vice versa, what have been the disappointments?

jazzykeb
01-16-2008, 02:51 PM
I agree with Ohio, I don't know that this forum carries any particular weight with the organizers. I was curious about interest and I was also asking if anyone knew how to get the attention of the organizers. I also directed their manager to this thread so he could see the level of interest. Who knows what good it will do, but it is fun to dream.

Here is Grace Potters website: http://www.gracepotter.com/

I hear ya. We've tossed this around before. I don't know that it's so much a matter of how they "go over", more that the organizers try to book bna's that fit in with the musical tastes of the typical attendee. For instance I can't remember many, or any, heavy metal bands playing. I don't know to what extent they actually "invite" acts, probably more a matter of who is touring during that time frame. I do remember that Joni Mitchell was considered a disappointment, and hasn't been back since. I don't know if it's because she hasn't been asked or not.

Since Katrina, the organizers seem to have redoubled the emphasis on bna's. Part of that is because the year before they lost money when a day was cancled due to wet weather (we don't use the "R" word here). I think they feel that they need to compete with the myriad of festivals popping up across the country. In terms of profit, I guess they were correct in their assessment, because the Foundation was able to once again fund their charity projects this past year.

Grace would fit in just fine, imo, she's nice & roots-y. There are some past fest goers who don't attend anymore because they believe the specialness of the Fest has been spoiled by the emphasis on bna's. I can understand that. Personally I question some of acts chosen, but it seems to be working for the Foundation.
