NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc. will support community involvement in Jazz Fest by distributing 8,500 free tickets to the world-famous festival of local music and culture.
Community groups, high schools, religious organizations and nonprofits have until February 28 to submit applications for tickets under the foundation's longstanding Community Outreach Ticket program. (Schools for fourth through eighth graders can make arrangements to attend Jazz Fest through a separate program, School Day at the Fest, which will be on Thursday, May 1.)
The Foundation, which was established in 1970, owns the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell ("Jazz Fest") and uses the festival's proceeds to support year-round community development activities in the areas of education, economic development and culture.
The Foundation is increasing the number of Community Outreach Tickets allotted for free distribution from 7,500 in 2007 to 8,500 this year.
"It brings us great pleasure to be able to distribute so many tickets to the community," said Don Marshall, the Foundation's executive director. "It's so important that we preserve our culture by making sure that everyone in our community has the chance to experience and enjoy Jazz Fest."
As it has for many years, the Foundation's Community Outreach Ticket program makes free Jazz Fest tickets available to local groups, which in turn distribute the tickets to people who otherwise might not be able to attend.
Community Outreach tickets are distributed according to strict guidelines. They may not be sold, used for fund- raising or given as gifts or incentives to employees, business clients and the like. Commercial enterprises and individuals are not eligible to apply.
Applications and guidelines for Community Outreach Tickets are available online at www.jazzandheritage.org. The number to call for information is (504) 558-6100.
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc. is the nonprofit organization that owns the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell, and uses the proceeds to fund year-round community development activities in the areas of education, economic development and cultural programming. Programs and assets of the foundation include: radio station WWOZ 90.7-FM; the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archive; the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music; the Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series; the Jazz Journey concert series; the Community Partnership Grants program; the Raisin' the Roof housing initiative; and the S.E.E.D. micro-loan program for entrepreneurs. The foundation also produces community events such as the Crescent City Blues Festival, Fiesta Latina, the Congo Square Rhythms Festival, the Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival, the Down By the Riverside Thanksgiving concert and others.

In a city with such aching poverty you gotta wonder if all 8500 ticket holders attend the fest or some scalp them outside the gates ??

Sell all your worldly goods and become a resident. Eat in the French Quarter three meals a day until you run out of money. Get free tickets.
