I had heard about this, saw the headlines in the local Vineland newspaper, but still can't believe they are going to have a big festival within miles of my house! I'm just glad it's not on the same weekend as Crawfish Fest up in Augusta, or the Blues Fest in Wilmington... and I wonder if Bubba Mac is putting on another MidAtlantic Blues fest this summer... Bob Rose had a few good small fests going in the area... one year we had Marcia Ball, Brian Lee, Rockin' Dopsey and Charmaine Neville and lots of Louisiana food besides the usual Bridgeton Folk Fest, but that, I'm sad to say, was a one year only thing... but the Folk Fest has been going strong for 20+years and he usually ends it with a few nice headliners from Louisiana, this past year that became the Southern Shore Music Fest and was held at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds in the middle of June... but this new fest looks like it's going to be big!

EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN FESTIVAL PRODUCERS JOIN FORCES TO CREATE VINELAND MUSIC FESTIVAL IN 2008
Festival Republic (Reading, Leeds, Glastonbury) and C3 Presents (Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits) have partnered to create the Vineland Music Festival, a brand new US destination event August 8th- 10th in Vineland, New Jersey. The Vineland Music Festival will be a weekend of pure unadulterated rock’n’roll pleasure; the signature stamp of Reading and Leeds, Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. Complete with a heady mix of the greatest bands in the world, energy charged sets; new rising stars and the freshest acts hitting the stages before the press have had a sniff of them. Three days of amazing music combined with acres of lush, green campgrounds. Formerly trading as Mean Fiddler, Festival Republic’s Managing Director Melvin Benn took control of the Reading Festival in 1989. Today it is the greatest rock festival in the world and has grown into the sell out 80,000 capacity event it is today. In 1999 Melvin added a sister festival; The Leeds Festival (capacity 70,000) to the Reading weekend, with a combined footfall of over 200,000 people.
In 2006 Festival Republic created the award winning and sell out Latitude Festival: a 30,000 capacity Arts and Music festival embracing all of the best from music, film, theatre, literature and poetry in the beautiful Henham Park in Suffolk. Melvin also took on the producing, licensing and organization side of Glastonbury Festival as well as part ownership in 2002. Due to the smooth running of the festival since, Festival Republic were this year granted a rise in capacity to 177,500 making it the worlds largest Performing Arts Festival. In addition, Festival Republic runs Rise: London United, an anti-racist festival in London’s Finsbury Park and the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square.
C3 Presents produces the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Texas and Lollapalooza in Chicago with Janes Addiction front man Perry Farrell. Along with these multi-day, multistage festivals, C3 books and promotes more than 1,000 concerts in arenas, theaters, casinos, and clubs across the US. Its 2007 ticket sales placed C3 at number 9 in the world. C3 also manages a wide range of artists.

i was talking to someone from vineland and was told that they are going after some pretty big name acts... rumors are possible chili peppers, matellica, springsteen... plus a ton of smaller acts... don't know how true the above names are, but if they throw a party that close to my back yard, I AM IN! :D

the locals are freaking a bit about it... worried about security and the like, had a big town hall meeting about it. i believe the $$$ to the city won out and it looks like it is a go... should be interesting!

Yeah, to weird, but I think it has to do with that new NASCAR raceway opening up the same weekend actually or something like that. One of PapaRoux's dear friends in the City of Vineland's head engineer, so we get to hear bits and pieces of things... plus we live only a couple of blocks out of the city limits into Gloucester County, so where they are holding this is only a few miles from us... much closer than where we met last summer, for us anyway. I guess I better get the kids stuff out of the extra bedrooms... I have a feeling I'll be hearing from Charlie and Juls needing a place to stay. LOL

Hey, did you hear if Bubba is going to do another blues fest or not? I might see him tomorrow night when I go to see Carm and Nance in Somers Point... if you don't know and I see him, I'll ask!

haven't heard anything about bubba doing 2008, but the report after the weekend last summer had the flavor of them expecting bigger crowds in the future as word gets out, so it sounds like they intend to do it again. :)

I've been meaning to post about this for a a couple of weeks now, and didn't get to it. I'm glad you did it, Mama Roux!

We've been to Austin City Limits festival twice, and it is a really well-run festival. It will be great having something comparable within driving distance! Can't wait to see the lineup.

Unfortunately, I think it will be the same weekend as the Riverfront Blues festival in Wilmington, DE. We always enjoy that one, and it looks like Lil Ed is playing in 2008. Does anyone know the Wilmington dates for sure? (Maybe we can do one day at each festival. August FOMS already!)

Sounds like a plan! Hey, did you see the question about when the Wilmington Blues Fest would be? You're the one we count on for all that Blues fest info, Kel... I've attended it, but think it was the weekend the baby was born or just after last year... so was it the 11th and 12th or the 18th and 19th?

Mmmmm Mr. Benoit... everytime I say that I think of his little "how to say my name" routine and crack up.

Dueling rock festivals

New Jersey's summer rock-festival schedule is getting crowded. From Aug. 8-10, a festival produced by the same company that presents the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., will take place at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. The festival's name hasn't been finalized, though it reportedly will not be Coachella East or something along those lines.

The same weekend, the new Vineland Music Festival will debut on a 550-acre tract of farmland in the Cumberland County city of Vineland, which is about halfway between Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Eighty to 100 bands are expected to participate. Rumored Liberty State Park performers include Radiohead and Jack Johnson.

An official announcement is expected to be made early next week. No artists have been confirmed for Vineland yet. Over the last decade, the annual Coachella festival has built a reputation as one of the biggest and hippest rock festivals. Among the more than 100 acts on last year's bill were the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine and Bjork.

The residents have been fighting it tooth and nail. That's in the local paper almost every day.

I think the folks in TN fought The 'Roo too...but it turned out to be such a boost to the slow summer economy that the supporters drown out the detractors now.

Well, i don't think they realize just how good something like this could be for the area... but we'll see.

The location of this fest, btw, is going to be at Sherman Ave and Hance Bridge Road, in Vineland, NJ if anyone wants to google map it. It's 550 acres of farmland, almost into Millville, off Rt. 55 (a major hwy off Rt 42 from Philadelphia to get folks to Wildwood). It's about 10 miles from my house.

Funny, but the neighbor group that is against the concert is called NARCS.. NeighborsAgainstRockConcertSite ... how'd ya like that?

Vineland Festival To Relaunch in 2009

The proposed Vineland Festival originally scheduled for August 8-10 in Vineland, NJ will indeed take place, however a bit later than scheduled. Festival Republic and C3 Presents have announced that "Due to the overall festival traffic in the northeast and big bands touring through this area at the same time, co-producers Festival Republic and C3 Presents have decided to step back and launch Vineland in 2009."

The promoters of Coachella recently announced their own festival to take place in the same area that weekend, while the Virgin Festival also is slated to overlap. As a result, the Vineland promoters explain that they "did not want to force music fans to choose between three events on the same weekend. While disappointed with the delay, they believe the overall health of the festival business and the music industry takes precedent over any of their singular objectives. Both the city of Vineland and the co-producers are committed to working diligently to bring a world class music event to Vineland, one that enhances the community and is a success for years to come."
