OK, this is a thread to review and discuss the various portable chairs on the market these days. If you want to discuss the use of chairs at Fest, please start your own thread.

I am prompted to create this thread by some of you who have asked about my experiences with the various chairs that I have tried. I have a bad lower back and have always been in search of the 'perfect' chair for festing. I cannot use the standard camping chairs that most folks use because the 'sling' style of construction puts my spine in exactly the wrong position...

The Roll-A-Chair (http://www.camptime.net/roll-a-chair.htm)

http://www.camptime.net/images/PhotoDraw7514.jpg http://www.camptime.net/images/PhotoDraw7512.jpg http://www.camptime.net/images/PhotoDraw7511.jpg
Weighing in at only 2.5 lbs, this was the first chair I tried. The seat height is 19" and it sports it's own carrying strap, which you can put over your shoulder. It offers surprisingly good back support. My only gripe is the diamond shaped seat, which creates sensitive pressure points on the butt after a day or two of use. I figured there had to be something better...

So the next chair I tried was:

The Quik-E-Seat Tall (http://www.gcioutdoor.com/products_quikeseat_tall.htm)

http://www.gcioutdoor.com/pix/g_quikeseat_tall_features.gif http://www.gcioutdoor.com/pix/g_quikeseat_ani.gif

Weighing in at 5 lbs, this chair also offers good back support, and it folds itself with just a pull on the strap. Two major problems I found with it though. First, the way the strap is designed causes the chair to bang on your leg while carrying it by putting the strap over your shoulder. In fact it also tends to slip off your shoulder frequently. Secondly, the front post of the triangular seat tends to become very uncomfortable for men, if you know what I mean....

ohio

The next chair after that:

The Highlander (http://www.gcioutdoor.com/products_highlander.htm)

http://www.gcioutdoor.com/pix/b_highlander_features.gif http://www.gcioutdoor.com/pix/g_highlander_folded_small.gif

A super comfortable chair, wheighing in at 8 lbs. However, as you can see from the second pic, it is ungainly to carry. Extremely pleasant to sit in though...

The chair I am trying out for this Fest:

The Pico (http://www.gcioutdoor.com/products_pico.htm)

http://www.gcioutdoor.com/pix/PC-with-labels.jpg http://www.gcioutdoor.com/pix/PC-Bag-with-labels.jpg http://www.gcioutdoor.com/pix/PC-CBSC-with-labels.jpg

Basically this is the Highlander with telescoping legs, allowing the chair to fit in the nifty little carrying bag. I have tested it at a couple of local fests this past summer, and I love it. The bag has enough net pockets to carry anything I would usually need a back pack for, like r**n gear. At 20" x 12", the bag is easy to toss over your shoulder.

Thanks, Chris. I was worried it was me.
I've been having "picture insertion" issues lately, myself, but usually it shows a link?
Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to the chair pics, Bry. I'm still using the rolla-chair. I find it fits into small spaces nicely which comes in handy late in the day!

Hey Azeater, how portable is that model you've posted? ;)

Is it inflatable? :D

And, does it come in different colors?

I imagine that black would get pretty hot after a few minutes in the NOLA sun...

I can't find the link to it any more, but there should be others out there if you google. It's nice to be deep in the crowd at a stage and be able to pull out a cold cold beer...or five!

And Ohio, you know I ain't crappin' on ya... Just having fun.

What about these new fangled Coleman folding chairs:

The problem I have is that my wife is afraid someone will walk off with it if left unattended...

Have used this one the last 2 fests. Like ohio's new one, it has the air-cooled mesh, which I really like. Downside is it's pretty heavy, can't remember if it's 8 lbs or even more. It's from REI.

Like how your new chair is also a tote, ohio. How heavy is it?

I've sat in 'em and they are comfy. But no easy way to carry 'em.
I've never had a problem with theft, I always park mine with T-heads who are camping at a certain stage. It gets good use that way, even if I'm out & about.

My favorite is the BNA chair for those days when one waxes claustrophobic about getting stuck in the middle of the crowd at Acura.

I think it's 9. A little heavy, but worth it overall to my back. btw- the names of each chair I mention are also links to the manufacturer's sites. Check around for better prices though.

9 pounds is pretty heavy to be lugging around the FG. If you camp in one spot all day, not as bad.

I got a fairly heavy Coleman model. That and my Kelty fanny pack come in at about 12 lbs. Actually kinda light for what I see some folks toting in.
Once in, I glom onto my friends for ice, beer and other supplies.

ozzie, I'm thinking back when you visited me at Acura, I think it was Dylan set. My chair was about 30 feet from the stage. I was about 300 feet back with no way to get back in. I was tired, so I just sat down. You and grisgris found me though, that was so nice...

We have the Coleman chairs. We would buy a new chair every year, trying to find the one we liked best but stopped when we got to this chair. With the higher seat height and stable seat, it's much easier to get out of on my old broke-back knees.

Yeah, those are WAY cool, BB! :D

I've seen one at Burning Man (allowed there as they're not cars and they can't go much over 5 mph) and one just last weekend downtown at the LSU/Ohio State tailgating.

So the next chair I tried was:

The Quik-E-Seat Tall (http://www.gcioutdoor.com/products_quikeseat_tall.htm)

http://www.gcioutdoor.com/pix/g_quikeseat_tall_features.gif http://www.gcioutdoor.com/pix/g_quikeseat_ani.gif

Weighing in at 5 lbs, this chair also offers good back support, and it folds itself with just a pull on the strap. Two major problems I found with it though. First, the way the strap is designed causes the chair to bang on your leg while carrying it by putting the strap over your shoulder. In fact it also tends to slip off your shoulder frequently. Secondly, the front post of the triangular seat tends to become very uncomfortable for men, if you know what I mean....This is the chair I got for JF08 after seeing and trying out a friend's. I really like the fact that it's lightweight. But I agree that the freaking thing bangs into your knees when you're carrying it. I think I figured out that if you hold it close, it doesn't do that. "The front post of the triangular seat" -- you mean that which my funny friend refers to as the "pubic pedestal?" (That was only after I refused to let him call it my pussy pole!!) Not a problem for the female anatomy.:p

Hmmmmmm . . . maybe I should be looking into gettin' me one of these chairs . . . ;)One of the female gender could probably rock back and forth on the "pedestal" with interesting results (not that I've tried it, or anything).:D Seriously, I never sit for long at festivals, so these 3 legged stools have worked well for me, and they're easy to travel with. I have wished for back support, and with this one, I'll now have it. (You must, however, be careful to perfectly plant your pubes every time you sit down in order to avoid tipping over and looking/feeling like an idiot.)

(You must, however, be careful to perfectly plant your pubes every time you sit down in order to avoid tipping over and looking/feeling like an idiot.)Wait 'til they come out with the battery powered model :D

HeeHee. She said "Plum Sock." I love it when you talk dirty.

Even though you changed it, I got a severe earworm for that album now. Only one thing to do, fish it out and crank it up ;)

I didn't find much use for a chair. Shaken the booty is restricted. We just found some ground and sat down when we wanted to eat or rest. But then again it just me.

One of the best tips I got from last year was to go to the dollar store and buy a felt backed picnic table cover. It worked great and folded up to fit in the back pack and you could hold over your head in case of r@*n
