Together we can stop the racism at the Army Corps of Engineers that leaves African American and Vietnamese American neighborhoods without effective flood protection.
On December 11, 2007, the Army Corps of Engineers will convene a public meeting on environmental justice to address concerns about the impact of its activities on people of color and the poor. This public meeting will take place at the St. Maria Goretti Church, 7300 Crowder Blvd.
We hope that you will join us at this meeting to speak out for fairness and justice in all activities undertaken at the Army Corps of Engineers that must include the following:
· Eliminating the racial discrimination in the Corps' post-Katrina levee upgrade and repair work that will reduce flooding in the predominantly white neighborhoods of Lakeview and Old Metairie by 5.5 feet, but only provide African American and Vietnamese American neighborhoods with flood reduction that ranges from zero to two feet.
· Aligning levees and restoring wetlands to provide flood and hurricane protection for rural communities that are currently left out of such protection, such as Oakville in Plaquemine Parish.
· Ensuring that public information about all Corps' projects is clear, complete, accurate, and accessible to all New Orleans residents, including those who are non-English speakers/readers and those who have print disabilities.
· Restoring wetlands and coastal areas as part of the Corps' hurricane and flood protection activities, such as including in the Corps' plan to close the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet ("MR-GO") the planting of native Cypress trees in the waterway.
· Establishing a technical assistance program in which citizens can apply for funds to hire independent experts, who can advise them on the Corps' projects.For more information, contact: Monique Harden or Nathalie Walker with the Advocates for Environmental Human Rights at 504-799-3060.
