Well, this is just about the coolest Sunday ever!

I'm sitting here in my living room on a Sunday afternoon in Toronto watching "The Earth versus the Radiators" broadcast in high definition on HDNet! It's a live concert recorded at Tipitina's to honour their 25th anniversary as a band, and right now, Mark Mullins of Bonerama and Karl Denson are sitting in. Unreal. There's Fess looking down on the band, and the Fish heads are out in full force. Wow!

Hey Now Ross..... Enjoy the free trip to Tips!!! Those were some fine times. Rads with George Porter, Mark Mullins, Gregg Allman, Theresa Andersson, Karl Denson. The stage at Tips was loaded with musical talent paying homage to the Radiators. It was certainly well deserved, and much appreiciated by all of us who love the music that the Rads have been crafting for all these many years!!! Take Care in Toronto, Matthew

Seems to me that you appear on my DVD, Matthew. Am I right?

Get the DVD, Ross. Twice as long and even mo betta.
My favorite parts are from the real early years, great then and great now.
It is remarkable that NO musicians (for the most part), endure. The Rads sho nuf have.

Well, it's kind of interesting that they started in 78, and that's when i lived in NOLA. I think i might have seen them once back in the day, but other than one date in Winnipeg a couple of years back, I don't think they've EVER played up here in Canada.

The long and short of it is that I have virtually no emotional connection to the Rads at all. It's not that I don't like them (I do!), it's just that its so strange to see so many people indoctrinated into the Fish Head Nation when you have no connection to it whatsoever. I bought one of their albums a few years back, and I found that Dave Malone's vocals really didn't do much for me, but to see them live...well, that's something different entirely.

This vid was a great experience, and I definitely plan to dip my toes into the Rads waters a lot more in the years ahead!

Hey Now Stax! If you look, you can spot me a time or two on the DVD, enjoying a cold cold beverage, and a happy lil' jig, but thankfully, most of the crowd shots are spent on enticing young women who are much more pleasing to the eye than myself...... As to the Radiators music, and the level of devotion that we Fishheads enjoy, The Rads are a band that seem to either engender rabid devotion OR extreme indifference. Much like the Grateful Dead, most seem (in my experience) to really, really "get it" OR to be bored to tears with the band and thier music.... Different Strokes, I guess, but some of the most enjoyable moments of musical bliss I have ever had have come courtsey of the Radiators!!! Have a wonderful holiday season, and keep it funky, Matthew

I agree MM. As the Rads garner much love just like Jerry and the boys, they do receive an indifferent look from many people. I am just grateful that I did get on the bus for both rides. Happy Holidays to you.

i caught the rads for the umpteenth time in ardmore, pa. last week...

i have found there is a big difference in seeing the rads at a "typical" one set show where they are usually very straight foward in their playing and where they play almost exclusively their own tunes for an hour and a half without their trademark crazy, psychotic jams and killer cover versions. (which may be the cause a lot of the indifference for 1st timers) as opposed to the more "private" two setters where they do a ton of great covers and get a lot more greasy and really funk up their own stuff with extended jams at shows that can go on all night. (ardmore was and always is the latter for sho'!)

that being said, i have to nominate the rads once agian for consideration for this years poster on their 30th year as a new orleans funk icon!

LET"S RADIATE!!!

I've been a fishhead since the mid-eighties, although I admit I've calmed down considerably as I just love too many bands. Funny you should mention about people getting it, because as I was doing my show Friday I was playing "Hardcore". I was walking outside the studio, and the station manager made a comment on how good that was and asked "who is that". When I said the Radiators, she just said "oh", and let it drop.

I've been a pretty big Rads fan since the eighties and used to love when they played NO music hall (where Howlin Wolf is now) and they'd open the big side doors so you could see and hear the band out on the neutral ground.. We'd sit out there with coolers and just have the best time. Sometimes they don't do it for me (saw them this weekend at the Leaf and was underwhelmed). I went to 2 of the 25th shows though and they where absolutely incredible! These days I like them most at MOM's Ball at Mardi Gras.. something to do with the whole vibe and the costumes (and lack thereof), borderline exhaustion after 8 days of work-parade-party-repeat!, random insinuation into other peoples lil freakshows with the backdrop of funky, sultry, FUNKY Rads music.

Is it Jan 6th yet??

As a Tulane student from '83-'87, I got introduced to the Rads on the Quad for free at TGIF parties. Sirius plays them a fair amount, in comparison to terrestrial radio. Still crank "Like Dreamers Do". While in med school in Chicago, I called a radio station at 3 am during an all nighter and requested, "Doctor, Doctor". They played it and it helped stay me stay up. I've seen them in Chicago, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and at JazzFest. Tips shows are the ones that stick out as my favourite.
