View Full Version : Brad Pitt rebuilding Lower 9th

Am watching Brad Pitt on the Larry King Show, being interviewed right there outdoors in the Lower 9th Ward. This guy is a saint! I can't believe what great stuff he is doing to restore homes and help people return to this neighborhood. His enthusiasm and love for the city is exactly what is needed now. He is personally donatin $5 million or more, and says that everyone can get involved and help even rebuild part of a house. It is work and dedication like this that I was hoping the government would do when the liar Bush promised to do everything he could to help rebuild the city. It's really starting to seem like there is hope for that ravaged area. The pink structures where the homes will be erected reflect hope and a new beginning. He's talking about bringing family, friends and the neighborhood back. Brad Pitt has my highest respect for his work. He's really making it happen! As busy as he and Angelina are, for them to make this a priority is very touching. The website for this project is:
makeitrightnola.org:)

I love how you can do something tangible even by donating a very small amount... like $5 for a light bulb. Ken and I are going to give each other a bathroom in the project for Christmas.

By the way, Larry was once an all-night talk host on Shreveport LA radio and color commentator for the former Shreveport Steamers (World Football League).

Finally, here is a better photo of Brad Pitt. He is on the right.

Watching the show last night, I felt like I needed to make an I <heart> Brad t-shirt to wear during the Fest this year. Physically, he's not my thing, but I love the kind of guy that he is. :D Make it right, indeed!

Jennifer Anniston must have been smokin' serious amounts of crack to lose him! I hope she donates! ;)

I consider myself to be willing to push the envelope when it comes to architecture but most the designs are just the giant suck.

A couple of the them pick up cues from the arch styles of the area but mostly these are terrible.

Man, those are awful. I think that most people wanting to return HOME are going to want something similar to what they lost, not some type of California aesthetic that seems foreign to them. It's not that some of them aren't "cool"; it just that most of them don't come close to reflecting the lifestyles and spirit of the rustic, homey shotgun houses and cottages they lost. I just can't imagine any of those places with a pot of gumbo and red beans and rice on the stove, some folk art on the walls and people running through the hallways.

Even if they replaced the old-style shotguns and creole cottage with similar designs using 2007 technology, they would have automatically been 20 times more efficient and eco-friendly than the ones they lost. It is going to be interesting to see how the homeowners respond to the designs...

Well, they're designed to be very environmentally friendly, low eco impact, and green. That should keep energy costs way down, among other things. I think those designs are pretty cool, and I'd be nothing but grateful if someone built one of those for me when all I otherwise had was an empty plot of land.

http://katrinacottagehousing.org/images/home2.jpghttp://katrinacottagehousing.org/images/KC612.jpghttp://katrinacottagehousing.org/images/location8.jpg

Brad Pitt is to be praised for stepping up to the task that President Bush promised would be the government's responsibility, and sure, if you have no shelter at all, any sort of housing would make you thankful, but I don't think the folks in the Lower Ninth deserve to be guinea pigs for some "mad eco-tect" just because the Corps of Engineers caused the destruction of their neighborhood by their failure to properly construct the levees and creating the fool hardy Mr.Go!
There are plenty of compatible designs for replacement housing in New Orleans that have been created through design competitions since Katrina. They are inexpensive, often modular and green friendly and could, no doubt, be made super green if that were called for (given the climate, I don't know if it is.) They can be found under the generic name of "Katrina cottages" and like the ones pictured above are much more appropriate for the historic and culturally rich neighborhoods of the Crescent City.

More info can be found here http://katrinacottagehousing.org/ (http://katrinacottagehousing.org/) or by searching "Katrina Cottage" on Google.

Absolutely, I think those designs are intriguing. They certainly demolish any stereotype of "what the poor ought to like" with a positive and exciting vision. To be fair, there are designs that are less startling to conventional eyes, for example.

The first one looks like a mailbox. The second one looks like it would be suitable for a windy location. The third one would look nice tucked into a mountain side. The posts look pretty flimsy to me, though.

I would lean more toward a more trad New Orleans design, like the ones Mich posted. I have nothing against modern designs as long as some function
is contained within the form. Any design can incorporate green ethics.

Anyone catch this on the Today Show this morning?

they were talking about the neighborhood in the ninth ward that Mr. Pitt is working on creating, it's a major undertaking with big architects, planning to start with 150 houses and they're asking for donations to help build them. at the end of the segment ann curry says that a few people have donated an entire house, including...."designer donna karan, singer Jimmy Buffett, and the band WIDESPREAD PANIC!"

Very nice!

They may be intriguing, but instead of "what the poor ought to like" they are giving them "what we think the poor ought to have." You picked the two designs out of a dozen that reference the shotgun esthetic, if vaguely. Those designs might not look so jarring in Lakeview or one of the more recently built areas lakeside, but for $150,000 a pop building something compatible with its environs make a lot more sense.

The riverside areas of the Lower Ninth have historic houses that are increasing in value as preservation spreads through those neighborhoods. It's hard to imagine that the more avant garde designs will hold their value in a city known for its large stock of historic properties.

I posted three designs but there were others (including alternative views of some of the more radical ones) such as this one:
http://makeitrightnola.org/images/arch/d_morphosis_01.jpg

These are new homes - meant as the beginning of a new history. Their value would be tied to how historic this project is viewed in retrospect. And I'm betting that like many a concept, the process of construction will tone down the avant-garde aspects a notch a two. Also it often happens in design and architecture (just as it does in music and painting) that the public taste changes over time to embrace the artist's vision. Designs of what have become treasured icons (including most of Frank Loyd Wright's catalog) were met by contemporary shrieks of derision.

Given that "The Mission of Make It Right is clear: It is to be a catalyst for redevelopment of the Lower 9th Ward, by building a neighborhood comprised of safe and healthy homes that are inspired by Cradle to Cradle thinking, with an emphasis on a high quality of design, while preserving the spirit of the community's culture. The goal is to accomplish this quickly, so that the first residents can begin returning to their homes as soon as possible.", I think that the current designs serve this mission well. And this development comes about it looks to be a wonderful altenative compared to whatever FEMA and the bushnuts have "planned" for the area.

Bushnuts? It would appear that Bush and Fema have bowed out completely. Still, leaving the field to the Eco-nuts and Archi-nuts only seems to compound the problem. Looking at the MIR9 site, you see that except for right by the levee failure there are still many houses standing so these houses are not going to stand in a vacuum. And while FLW's designs are revered, they are really not houses people want to live in. I'm just suggesting that providing housing that is more in the vernacular of their neighborhood and their experience, as the Katrina cottages are, seems like a more positive sort of assistance to those really in need. Why not give folks a choice?

Right. And try to avoid a cookie-cutter approach at the same time.

FLW houses are very cool and there is a move under way in the U.S. toward contemporary architecture, so this may mean that some of the new homes that are to be rebuilt in New Orleans may reflect this trend.

I bought a contemporary house one time from the architect who had designed it, built it and lived in it for 10 years. It was a work of art and very functional at the same time because key elements of the design incorporated heating/cooling/ lighting needs into the house.

For example, the great room had a 35' high cathedral ceiling with clerestory windows at the top. The clerestory could be opened and closed as needed to allow warmer air to escape and reduce the use of the central AC system. The clerestory also had motor driven shades that could be operated with a switch.
There were many other design features that were "smart" like this. One thing I wonder about, though, is what building material will be used in place of the cypress wood that was perfect for the climate in New Orleans.

That's the first time I've ever seen the word 'clerestory' used three times in an article in my life! Good work! (Uh, what's a clerestory?)

I don't know about y'all but if it was a choice of a funky looking (and very functional by all early accounts) house or a FEMA trailer or not moving back to, or even worse moving out of, the City that I lived my entire life in I would prolly choose the funky house. I certainly am not advocating a beggars can't be choosers (as I consider the people of the lower 9th an important part of the vitality of NOLA) mentality but those houses are not that bad looking enough to make me turn my nose up at one if given the chance to remain in my home city.

Good thing those aren't the only two options. If they were, it would be akin to saying, "ok, you either go naked or wear the clown suit we give you". But, I'm sure when all is said and done, these people will have more flexibility to choose the housing they want.

I don't think you have anything to worry about PC. I'm sure a lot us have unusual phobias. For example, Walmart and most suburban malls sincerely give me the creeps. In fact, the only way I can go into Target is by whispering "The enemy of my enemy is OK to shop at" even as I shudder my way down the aisles.

One person's clown suit is another's tuxedo lol I guess what I mean to say is that the efforts are appreciated by someone like myself who doesn't need a place to live there (not just yet anyway and btw if they are buying I will live in one to test it out for habitability). I do not expect someone to take up residence as a sort of "you will take it and you will like it" mentality. I just think they are not that bad for a very bold initiative and agree, Frosty, that there will be more flexibility to choose for sure.

And today's tuxedo is tomorrow's leisure suit!

The important thing here is to empower these people to rebuild their home in their own vision. Speaking with some people who spent as much money to jack up there homes as it would cost to rebuild them, the reason they gave was that they would have the same home. Familiarity in a time of uncertainty.
