I was there...believe I was there with Amy and Jeff and some other folks...just special. I saw Warren play with the Mule after Garcia's death as well and he just is able to verbalize such emotional issues....He had played at the CAC with the Mule and Galactic (was that it?) very late the prior evening. I have the JF recording of the set and it gives me chills every time I hear it.

I had to buy the cd of that. It was one of the best JF sets I have ever seen and still amazing today. The end with And it Stoned Me, One, and Soulshine was magical.

Hey, I can't believe that nobody mentioned Warren Haynes JF set in '06. He played so beautifully and you knew that he chose every song from his heart..directed at post-K New Orleans. It was mesmorizing and I totally fell in love with that dude from that moment on. Was anyone else there?
That was an incredible set. One of my highlights that year for sure!!

 No way, they're selling tix for SEPTEMBER? Man, girl..I take it that it's sold out huh? That's going to be incredible! It's at someone's house?? Can you bring a guest? ;) wow!

Yes, I think the announcement was made in late August, believe it or not. And , yes, it is now sold out.

It's at a location called The Fur Peace Ranch in S.E. Ohio. It's a small (cap. 200), acoustically perfect performing space on the ranch, which is owned by former Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna guitarist, Jorma Kaukonen.

Warren is also heading a 4-day workshop there . The workshop sold out in less than 3 days.

Maybe I can sneak you in in my backpack?!?:D

I really like Delbert. In looking for some information, I came across the following documentary. Anyone ever seen it?

Rocking the Boat: A Musical Conversation and Journey

For nearly 50 years, 3-time Grammy® award-winning, Roadhouse/Roots/Rock legend, Delbert McClinton has been playing to everything from packed honky tonks to opera houses. He is a revered figure among his musical colleagues.

He is said to have taught John Lennon licks on the harp as well as being the inspiration for the Blues Brothers, who honed their act on stage with him at the Lone Star Cafe in NYC in the 70's.

Since 1995, he has leased a cruise ship and filled it full of his musical friends and fans and thrown a floating music festival and retreat. From 11a.m. 'til 3 a.m., every day for 7 days, they rock the boat in the Caribbean. If you ask many cruisers where the ship is going they don't know. Most don't even care.

Rocking the Boat combines interviews with Delbert's fellow road warriors, as well as 21 live shipboard performances from the likes of Delbert, Rodney Crowell, Marcia Ball, Stephen Bruton, Jeffrey Steele and many others. The cast represents some of the best and most successful singer/songwriters working today. These artist are fiercely independent and have made many choices in favor of artistic integrity over commerce.

RTB was shot with 5 cameras in HD (this release is standard def). Two designated 24-track audio packages were used to capture live shows that will rock your world.

In 2007, RTB opened the 37th Annual USA Film Festival, won best documentary at the 16th Woods Hole Film Festival, and was also selected by the Breckenridge, Lone Star International, and Dixie Film festivals.

Apparently the rumor is true. When he was a teenager he went to England with Bruce Channel who had a big hit at the time. The Beatles were on the bill with them, and Delbert taught John the harp. Shortly thereafter, John played it on "Love Me Do".

Now there is a legitimate and welcome snowflake for first weekend! Thanks Chris. Delbert is one who I actually checked on while looking for snowflakes myself. Seen him at fest before and he was great. I figured he might be likely to return for first weekend this time, because it appears to have a bit of a country theme going so far. I don't really like the Tim McGraw style of country music (and I was hoping it wouldn't veer too much in that direction, because that's not my thing) but I love Delbert, who is more country/blues/roots rock/Americana. It seems that the second weekend, as per the recent trend, is more jamband oriented. I do like a lot of that music too, but I don't like the dynamic that develops when bands like WSP, DMB, Phish, etc. who have their own mass following play the fest, because it seems like it's adding an entire additional crowd to the crowd that is already there for the fest. Same thing happens when Buffet plays and all the Parrot Heads come just because he's there. At that point, usually mid-day on second Saturday, the crowd just seems to become overwhelming almost everywhere on the fairgrounds. But I digress...great news about Delbert, and keep those first weekend snowflakes coming. More acts in the "good" country vein, including alt-country, would be The Gourds, Drive By Truckers, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle and James McMurtry.

I know I am a bit late to the snowflake party here, but I have become so fixated on the disparity between first weekend and second weekend rumors that you have motivated me to spend hours and hours surfing the websites and myspace pages of literally more than a hundred acts that have come to mind, and those who have been offshoots of them. In that time I have found nothing except the curious trend that most artists' current schedules either end in March or have convenient gaps in late April through early May. But I have managed to pi$$ off my wife by having my laptop open constantly while sitting around the house and refusing to give a straight answer to her inquires about what the hell I'm doing spending all this time transfixed by the computer like I'm on a mission or something. It is to the point now that I am re-checking all the artists again to see if there is anything new since the last time I checked--kind of like I check this thread, oh, every ten minutes or so...

Mary Weiss's appearance at the Ponderosa Stomp will be Tuesday (according to an e-mail just sent out by Richard X. Heyman, her guitar player). It lists 5pm as the time, but I'm assuming that is just the start time of the Stomp that day.

For those of you who don't know, Mary was the lead singer of the Shangrilas and she hasn't toured in 40 years.

Nope, not the first fest for me. Seventh or eighth, I think (started in '95 and have been to most but not all since). And Mrs. Lit definitely gets it--all too well, from having attended four or five--as do young children of Lit, who have been to two fests (and counting...) themselves. But for various reasons it is not to be for the rest of the family this year, so Mr. Lit going solo again knows well enough to keep his mouth shut and count his blessings that he has such a wonderful wife that she is willing to allow this, while staying home with young children who are very, very upset to not be returning themselves this year. Simply put, it would not be wise for me pour salt in the wound by saying "Oh, I'm just ignoring the rest of you while checking hundreds of websites to see if I can find out who I might be able to see at the fest (which you will be missing) three months from now."

We are getting in that day, and the plan was to take some down-time after the plane ride, enjoy the energy from all the festival-goers when they got back into town, have a great night, and be well-rested for Piano Night the next day.
Cassandra Wilson is blowing a hole in that plan.
I realize first weekenders don't have a lot on the table right now, but Wilson is surely a treasure. I'm assuming she will be on later in the day -- and I'm also assuming we will be tossing our luggage to anyone gracious enough to take it at the hotel and bolting toward the grounds...

Ah yes, I believe the time has come to once again raise the battle cry, perhaps in its own dedicated thread, to
LET US DANCE IN THE BLUES TENT, GODDAMNIT!!!
ROFLMAO!!!! I love it :)

Bump! Sorry, I know "The Dailies'' are the cool, happening thread right now. And tomorrow apparently will bring even hipper threads filled with joyous material. But I just couldn't let this one go yet, having watched it grow from a baby to the promise of another great festival.
Goodbye, "For the Grids,'' soon to be relegated to the back pages of the jazz forums -- unless, of course, people keep it going for the night performances?
You have been a fun, uplifting thread, mysterious in ways that the official announcement could never be... I will miss you:)

After looking at the lineup for this year, it seems clear that one band has been left out who is more appropriately named to play the opening slot on first Friday. You can catch them next Thursday, 1/31 at Republic Nola as their tour with Super Furry Animals comes to town. I am speaking of none other than the band who calls themselves Holyfuck:eek:

We can keep this alive for the inevitable "additions"!

Always torn - pumped for my weekend (1st) and jealous of 2nd!

Great lineup all the way through though (assuming its legit)!

For the Grids will now return to it's previously held purpose: To explore strange new websites, to seek out new gigs and new musicians, to boldly grid what no man could possibly experience in it's entirely.

I have to say that in my short history as a Threadhead (5 years), this run up to the Dailies was the most phunnest of all. Chris, you tease -- thanks for the fun! :D

What is the story with the night time grids? Is Dan doing it? Nothing over there on Jazzfestgrids.com

I didn't want to bother him with emails of announced shows if he was not running it this year.

Dank, don't forget St. Claude Ave. music clubs. The Hi-Ho lounge and Saturn Bar have been hosting live music on a consistant basis as of late and should be hoppin at Fest time.
