Pretend you're shopping for someone who has no CD's. And you're going to get them ONE CD from each of the following artists. Which CD would you buy for each artist?
Professor Longhair:
Eddie Bo:
Meters:
Jon Cleary:
Rebirth Brass Band:
Trombone Shorty:
BONUS: What CDs from other artists do you consider NOLA essentials?

Different Crazy Alice. That Crazy Alice you allude to is clearly an imposter.

I third that. I bought it a couple of years ago for the person who first introduced me to New Orleans culture and Jazz Fest. He still thanks me, especially on those cold winter nights when you need a lil NOLA.
It's also easier to wrap!

I whole-heartingly agree, too. I love that box set. The problem is I already gave that as a gift, and now I'm looking for specfic albums, ya see? Thanks though.

A choice for some of them:
Professor Longhair - New Orleans Piano
Jon Cleary - Cleary and the AMG from 2002 (although I may switch to Pin Your Spin, but I've only listened to it once.)
As a bonus:
New Orleans Social Club - Sing Me Back Home

Here are my votes:
Professor Longhair: Crawfish Fiesta
Eddie Bo: Check Mr. Popeye
Meters: Rejuvenation
Jon Cleary: JC and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen
Rebirth Brass Band: The Main Event: Live at the Maple Leaf
Trombone Shorty: Orleans and Claiborne
The hardest for me was The Meters pick. Their first three albums are CLASSICS. Run, don't walk, to get these if you don't have them already:
The Meters
Look Ka Py Py
Struttin'
Whew!
But I chose Rejuvenation because it represents a more mature, "full" sound than their earlier work. Horns, vocals, etc. Mmm Mmm Mmm. Tasty!

I'll go with Freebo's picks. Shorty only has the one album but I do love 12 and Shorty with James and Troy. I'd probably add an early Galactic: Crazyhorse Mongoose and the Neville's latest: Walkin in the Shadow of Life.

Just got that from LMF in the mail yesterday, incredible amount of early rock classics!
I got one for my music loving brother along with a J&M shirt, and a book about the classic studios 'Temples of Sound' with a chapter devoted to J&M.
A Cosimo theme gift...

I'm doing a cossimo gift for juana, too, bry.
I was thinking about this thread today as I listened to my jazzfest05 compilation cd. That would be a great way to go-one of the fest compilations.
cool. they are both the kind of music fanatics who will appreciate it!

thanks for all the suggestions here, especially the cosimo stuff. i may go that route.
someone mentioned the jazzfest compilation cds. but doesn't the quality sort of suck? i haven't heard many of them, but i downloaded some trombone shorty songs from his performance on itunes, and it was really poor sound quality.
is there one year that the compilation is particularly good, as far as sound quality and content?

I've got the Fest06 compilation cd and its terrific. The sound is good. It's strange in a way because it's like walking from stage to stage at Fest but you keep wanting to hear crowd noise! Very cool cd. (But I can't say enough about John Boutte's Jambalaya! All of my friends who've heard it loved it.)

Was 05 the Meters reunion? That's the one I was listening to today. It's the first song from their set and the first song on the 3 cd set. They do Welcome to New Orleans and it takes me right back to that moment.:D
