View Full Version : Who Really Should Be On This Year's Poster?

On another thread, Jerry Lee Lewis has been mentioned. But I think Irma (who did appear on the 1994 poster as part of a crowd) , Allan T and Kermit are all great choices...and each better than Jerry Lee. Of course, Uncle Lionel would make an nice tribute to Economy Hall. But then again one of the best only found in New Orleans sounds are the Brass Bands. One of these might be due for a poster. For example, the Dirty Dozen have been funkifying New Orleans and Jazz fest for a good 25 years, Rebirth would also be great choice...How long do we have to wait for that spectacular Bonerama poster that I'm suddenly imagining?

Check here for the photos. Some are still available for sale from Art4Now; others can be found on Ebay.

Here's a good place to start (http://www.art4now.com/jpovalue.shtml) You will find links to most of the posters in the series , original and currently estimated prices.

The 2007 posters, of which we have been speculating about, should be available for ordering prior to the festival. But when they go on sale and if you like what see, buy one early, although it may takes months before the poster is shipped. Last year, many people who arrived at the festival expecting to buy this poster

went home empty handed..

My 2006 fest & congo square posters are still in the tube. :( Maybe after I get a few paychecks from this new job, and pay off a few bills, and get the car fixed, I can get my posters framed. :)

I may be wrong but my thoughts are that Harry Connick Jr. will be on the poster this year.

This morning on WWOZ (the best radio station for all things New Orleans), Bob French stated that Harry would be playing the closing show at the 2007 Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans. That would be on Sunday, May 6th

He hasn't played jazzfest in a long time and in 2004 he was rained out so who knows.
Especially with everything he has been doing for Nola and Katrina.

Harry Connick, Jr. will donate all proceeds from his single All These People, out Aug. 29, to New Orleans Habitat Musicians' Village. The New Orleans native was inspired to write the song after seeing the suffering and devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. The song, a duet he recorded with gospel singer Kim Burrell, is the first from Connick's forthcoming New Orleans big-band album, Oh My Nola, out this fall.

Harry was on the poster in 2004. I doubt that they would feature him again so soon.

Ok , Here's my take on Kermit....surely someone here can do better

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i193/Michelino/Misc/KermitPoster2007.jpg

We've framed the 2001 Louis Armstrong, which really dominates our small dining room but have not put up 2002 or 2004. I like both of them but just not enough room yet....and problem is ...last years Congo Square really gets better every time I look at it. Not that our house was lacking for New Orleans art and knicknacks before I decided to get into the posters...

I wouldn't be disappointed to see Jerry Lee on there, but it would be great to see someone like Kermit on there for sure.

Maybe they, quite rightly, think they could do a better job of a Harry poster!

I'd vote for Kermit though.

Also, Jerry Lee Lewis was born in Louisiana....and one of the three great rock pioneer/legends still alive. Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee. There are so many wonderful musicians that deserve to be on the poster, but Jerry Lee Lewis is a wonderful choice.

Has Allen Toussaint ever been on a poster? I don't think so. He's certainly in the legendary status, I'd like to see a Toussaint poster. Michaelangelo-Michelino???

Mich,... that's a damn fine poster you put together there... if you were a local artist they'd probably make that the official choice right here and now.....

What the hell were they smokin' when they gave the greenlight to that h.c. jr. thing???..

That's a pretty cool poster indeed Mich. I think Kermie or Allen or Irma would be great this year. Hmm, I think I'd lean towards Irma, when was the last time the fest poster featured a woman?

Thanks Paul, here's the same Kermit poster at a little better resolution. (http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i193/Michelino/Misc/Kermitposter1500.jpg)...

You know, I usually agree with most of your opinions but when it comes to the 2004 Harry, I really think that Paul Rogers created a great poster. I like it because I've really come to appreciate Matisse in the last few decades as the poster is inspired by the style
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i193/Michelino/Misc/matisse106.jpg
he used right around the Jazz Age era. But I also know that a lot of people didn't care for it.

Toussaint is long overdue.

I also would be thrilled to see a modern brass band on a poster, but as much as I like Rebirth, the honor has to go firstto the Dirty Dozen, who pretty much reinvented the genre.

Lotta good choices here, Jazz Fest may have to start issuing trading cards to catch up. Given their history with the fest, Sherman Washington and the Zion Harmonizers might be the most "inspired" pick. Perhaps Aaron can join them one more time (for the 40th Fest?) at least on a poster.

Jerry Lee & Randy Newman have never been featured anywhere on a Jazz Fest poster. Irma, James Booker, Ernie K Doe, Allen Toussaint & Frogman Henry have been featured either on alternate (non-Fest sponsored) or Offbeat's annual cover poster. Why no mention of New Orleans own...Radiators?

Instead of Baseball Teams we might have the Brass Band Series...Gospel Tent Favorites...Historic Jazz Fest Moments...The Economy Hall Second Line Collection...
perhaps we need a new thread just for posting prototypes...(you can count on me doing a few but later tonight)

How about Dr. Michael White?

In a completely different vein, how about Buddy Guy -- now associated mostly with Chicago, but born and raised, and started his musical career, in Louisiana.

And I agree that Toussaint is overdue.

Call me crazy, but I have this vision of helicopters, flatboats and dragonflies! It would be a departure from the usual fare, but who/what better than the Jazzfest poster to honor the heroes of the Katrina disaster, the helicopters and the flat boats that saved so many people from the floods!

If we're not feeling so adventerous, I vote for Dave Bartholemew with or without Cosimo. Dave was the leader of the hottest band in New Orleans, a great trumpet player, a geat talent scout and an incredible producer. If anyone represents the New Orleans sound, it's Dave.

Richard Thomas' 2006 Congo Square and 1989 Fats Fest posters certainly prove he deserves another shot at the Fest Poster. Personally, I would like to see Bruce Brice get a chance to do one. His colorful, primitive style would lend itself to the Fest poster and he did the original Fest poster, more of a flyer, really. Neither of these guys are going to be around forever and they both personify art at the Fest!

Howz' about some kind of panoramic compilation of the Boss and his incredibly impressive band of merry makers that so moved us last year...

I think the many of us who were fortunate enough to witness that scene,.. agree it ranks about as high as high gets...... an epic that deserves a memorial honor me thinks...

Turn that sucker sideways for once,.. and include that whole wonderous band,.. with as big a piece of that raptuous crowd that can be fit into the mix...

After all,.. we too,............... are the fest....
