Final Sunday last year was great, except . . .

. . . something very important was missing.

Any rumors about the Bros returning for '07?

Care to elaborate? Yes I listened to what Cyril had to say post-K, but do we know they still feel that way?

Sorry, Fest, I apologize for being so flip. I believe that Aaron is still afraid his asthma will act up, plus, the last we heard, his wife was suffering from cancer. I don't expect to ever see cyril back here, though, Lord knows, I've been wrong before. Charles lives in New England and the word on the street is that the Never Neville Brothers are winding down and Mean Willie Green is looking for fresher talent to hook his star to.

The last article I read said they were all going their seperate ways, doing more solo oriented projects. Left me with the impression that they were done as a band, at least for now.

Gotta go along with ibj & ohio on this... everything I've read seems to indicate we won't see them again, esp not in New Orleans. Sad.

As I mentioned previously, I spoke with Poppa Funk in Calgary last year and he basically told me exactly what Ohio just said. I don't want to believe it, but... :>(

Despite any issues that locals might have with the band (or specific members thereof!), seeing the Nevilles at Tipitina's in 1978 was THE defining moment of my torrid love affair with the city. For my money, there just isn't ANY act that can suitably fill their shoes for the closing slot, and I sincerely hope that one day I will again hear the strains of "One Love" pumping through that PA system on Sunday as the tears stream down my face...

I for one, would LOVE to see the Neville Brothers back. But, we forget how old these guys really are and the fact that they are moving on musically. While we may miss their collective fire, we must remember that it is far better to have 4 working Neville's bringing that fire to 4 different projects than to have them continue together where that fire has burned out. We don't need them joining the ranks of Sting, Stevie Wonder, and others who are shadows of what they once were and we cringe to think of them joining the ranks of the Beach Boys and Moody Blues touring bands. These guys can spread their wings and bring their fire to a new generation of musicians and bands and keep the NO sound alive. Finally, I think considering their age, their health issues, and their evolving musical directions, that we should be thanking the Nevilles for all they have given us instead of criticizing them for not living up to what we have wanted them to do. They continue to be out there as a voice for the city no matter what emotional, physical, financial, or political forces prevent them from returning.

Well put, frosty. Closing of JazzFest is just a moment - there are many who can make it wonderful.

Hear hear, Frosty! Though I think most of the criticism is rooted in sadness & denial that the Neville Bros. reign is over. If you think about it, "Walking In The Shadow Of Life' (an album I love dearly), was at least as much about Ivan and his brand of funk, as it was a Neville Bros. album. Always comes a time for the juniors to take over....

Excellent post Frosty. Wonder who is going to be closing fest 20 years from now? Everything changes . . .

I had also heard the Nevilles were done as a group but think I read that in Ross's post awhile back so no new insights to add . .

I loved closing fest with Ivan last year but wish it were at one of the bigger stages. Congo was cool but crowded....I'm so glad I got to see the Neville's with so many of my Threadhead brothers and sisters. What a beautiful, beautiful set that was :)

If Art and Ivan are the only "Bros" representing ..... I could live with that.

I was privileged to see them play in Oz just 3 months before the thing. It was a great show, with Ivan filling in for Art on keyboards. And Charles' sax was just sublime. Anyway, I'm not entirely pessimistic about this year's fest - didn't they play at Bonnaroo four months ago?

I got to close MY Jazz Fest experience with CJ Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band (I typed the full name because, it is just so cool). The crowd of college kids at the Acura tent thought we were crazy for getting up and leaving just when Dave Matthews was going to come on, but, I wouldn't change a thing. It was an awesome way to end the fest, dancing to some true South Louisiana music instead of an arena act I could see at Alpine Valley if I was interested in the first place. In addition, I got my Neville fix a few months later at Ravinia when the played with Dr. John and PHJB.
