He's 67 today. Hope he enjoys it, and I can get to see him before he is 68!

Happy B-Day Mac!
Here's my Dr. John encounter from a few years back. I get a call from Rocky Mountain Recorders here in Denver. They ask what I've got going on tomorrow - would I like to do a Jingle session w/ Dr. John? HELL YEAH!
The Client is Nissan Japan. They send over 2 producers from Japan who speak very little english. Have You seen Lost in Translation? They both look and act just like the "Santori Time" photographer.
Aparently, in Japan when they roll out a new model car they make a 5 minuite infomercial which they subsequently cut up into 30 and 60 second spots. For this one Mac will sing and play keys on Like a Rolling Stone. REALLY....
The band arrives early to set up and Mac shows up w/ his road manager Sparky. Mac is just the way he always is - a sweet but crusty character - making us all laugh by rolling his eyes at the Japaneese producers.
We listen to the Japaneese demo and are amazed by the quality - the singer sounds almost EXACTLY like Mac! We find out that after we are done recording the basics they will add a japaneese childrens choir. That cracks Mac up.....
So we proceede to record a 5 min version of Rolling Stone complete w/ piano & guitar solos - a rarity on a jingle. Afterwards, the producers listen back to the take. While they are doing so Mac says "Them sons a bitches is gonna come in here and make us cut this thang fo nother 2 hours and then decide to use this foist take." Sure enough, the come out of the control room and offers sugguestions like "Missa John, Missa John, please make it more....funky please". The one guy points out certain phrases and says "Rike Keef" (Like Keith Richards) and "Rittle Ling" (Hendrix - Little Wing) but we get it worked out. Sure enough, Mac was right, about an hour and a half later they call a break. We go into the kitchen to get some coffee and they rush out to tell us they are going to use the first take! Mac just smiles that cheshire grin, waves his cane in the air and says "Les git the F**K outta here"!
One footnote, the session paid $350 cash. We later found out that this song was on the Japanese Top 50 for 4 weeks. We didn't make another dime. But for me, the experience of playing w/ the good doctor was priceless....
