I know this to be certain and guaranteed. Jerry Lee Lewis will be the big name (and poster boy) for 2007 Jazzfest.

"The Killer" returns to Jazz Fest. I love it...

Cool he's playing. Not certain he'd be my pick for the poster though.

Not mine either...and I'll believe it when i see it. (No offense NYC gal!) There are just so many NOLA icons who haven't been featured yet; people who's spirit and artistic contributions have been indelibly stamped on the city in the past couple of years. Toussaint, Kermit, Irma, Dave Bartholomew, Bo Dollis...I think they all deserve the honour much more than the Killer.

Agreed Ross. Can't see him adorning a wall in my house on a JazzFest poster. There are many others that would be more appropriate.

I completely agree....if it is JLL then I'll be going with another Congo Square poster this year. Hoping for Allan T., Dave B., or Kermit. Any of those would be wonderful. Wonder who the artist is going to be this year?

Excuse me, but what does The Killer have to do with New Orleans heritage? He was born in LA., but his contributions to the music world began in Memphis...

Looks like I'll be procuring an extra congo square poster for this year's raffle . . .

Given Bo's health problems over the past year or two, he's definitely got my vote for poster boy this year. I would love to have some wild Injun colours to add to my living room...

man, wouldn't that be gorgeous? That would get my vote too Ross. The congo square poster from last year with the Injuns were cool but I'd love to see them done more colorful and with Chief Bo Dollis up front. Man, I hope they considered the maggies for the poster.

Since Monk Boudreaux was the subject of the congo square poster last year, i'd be surprised but happy to see the wild maggies on the jazzfest poster. And monk looks great in my living room.

The festival is named "The New Orleans Jazz and Louisiana Heritage Festival". There is nothing exclusive about New Orleans, never has been.
If you could name the top three most recognized music names worldwide from Louisiana they would probably be Satchmo (New Orleans), Jerry Lee (Ferriday) and Van Cliburn (Shreveport).
Jerry Lee is an icon of rock and roll, he stands with the all-time greats. I'm looking forward to his performance and poster if they happen (as long as the poster isn't another one of Warren Beatty ;) )

Yes, but that's what it says on the tickets every year:

To be fair I got it a little wrong, but the Louisiana Heritage thang has always been a part of the Fest, I think... From the History link above, about 1970:

"Wein’s concept of the Louisiana Heritage Fair—a large daytime fair with multiple stages featuring a wide variety of indigenous music styles, food booths of Louisiana cuisine, and arts and crafts booths, along with an evening concert series—formed a construct that would prove vastly appealing and enduring."

I'd go see the "Killer". He is one of the people everyone should see before they go to the great gig in the sky. And it won't cost you a bizillion dollars like McCartney or Stevie. And his new CD got good reviews;)

Was it marketed that way at point? At least that how I remember it and although I've come only since 1994 it seemed to be emphasized even back then....

But now...the mission statement on this site's foundation link (up top) makes little mention of the rest of the state

"The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Foundation, Inc. is a Louisiana non-profit corporation organized in 1970 to promote, preserve, perpetuate and encourage the music, arts, culture and heritage indigenous to the New Orleans area"

It's interesting, I can't find the "LHFair" thing anywhere, on this site, on the Foundation site, or in the program from last year. Only in the History link and on the tickets (it's always been on the tickets). If I had to guess there's probably a state tax break in there somewhere for getting "Louisiana" in the name somehow.

Count me in the number that will check out the Killer's show at Jazz Fest. I've had multiple opportunities but have never seen him live.

Interesting side note - when my parents were on their honeymoon in 1957, they were driving (in a borrowed '57 Chevy, no less) through Louisiana and Mississippi, and happened to stop in at a little roadhouse somewhere in rural Mississippi where a 21-year old named Jerry Lee Lewis was singing and banging away on the piano. They had never heard anything like it, but I guess nobody had at that point...

Tuba Phil aka Phil Frazier - hell of a great guy and very deserving!

From: www.rebirthbrassband.com:

Philip Frazier is the unequivocal leader of the band. He founded ReBirth Brass Band in 1983 while attending the legendary musical incubator of Joseph S. Cark Sr. High School, located in the heart of New Orleans. Philip attributes his interest in forming a brass band to his upbringing in the Treme area of New Orleans where, as a kid, he was surrounded by the rich tradition of Mardis Gras Indians and the annual parades of Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs. Philip’s sousa-funk sound on the tuba is the life force of ReBirth.

Wow, rosetree, insider advance info, how cool, thanks.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say Tuba Phil CO-founded ReBirth with Kermit Ruffins? Or do I have my history mixed up?

The artist who did the JLL poster this year is a beloved Louisiana artist and an extremely talented one as well...PLUS he's a super-cool cat.
I think y'all will be WAY more pleased with this artwork for the poster this year than you have been in the past few years...I know I am.

My dad called to say turn on aetn-PBS, it's your kind of music. What kind, daddy? Blues. So I do and it's Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis himself, with many guests. I'd heard some folks talk about seeing this show and I knew who it was as soon as the tv kicked on. But man, Jerry Lee done got old, just like all the rest of us. So if you wanna see the man, now would be the time. He's not jumping up and playing but he's stroking the keys alright. Go Little queenie!
