My personal, absolute, #1 favorite release in 2007 is IT'S LIFE, by GEORGE PORTER, JR.

As for live shows this year, I'm still thinking that one over. It'd be hard to narrow it down to 5! Does Jazz Fest count as one choice?

First, I was out of town at a family reunion this week with no Internet access. Just came to check the threads and am excited to see that my orginal post generated so much info on live music and cds I need to check out!

Second, you reminded me about a great Papa Mali set I saw in Arizona the week before the Fest this year.

Third, I was at Vegoose and agree on RRFB and Rage. That day also saw great sets by Michael Franti & Spearhead and Umphrey's McGee. On Rage, may not be everyone's thing, but man they bring it and Tom Morrello is an amazing guitarist - possibly the only Harvard educated musician I have seen play live :-) Their set was also one of the best I have seen this year if my list went to a top ten.

I have seen lots of shows in lots of places, but wen to see String Cheese Incident at Red Rocks this summer. It is, bar none, the best music venue I have been to. Just an amazing and beautiful setting. Anyone who loves music should try to see a show by a band or performer they like there.

Maybe my next thread will be favorite venues. Fillmore in SF or a sweaty show at the Maple Leaf anyone?

Solo? Did you ever hear his band the Bears? Really good stuff.Scoop, I'm a Bears fanatic! They had a 10 day tour with there latest release last spring. Guess which days....yep, the 10 days of Jazz Fest :(

The Bears are mostly a Cincy group that was the Raisins, Belew produced their album, then joined them to form the Bears. Actually Belew grew up just across the river in KY. His first band was a Beatles cover band. The rest is rock history, including stints w/Zappa & Bowie & of course King Crimson. Also has produced for the likes of Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails, Talking Heads etc.

This tour is a continuation of his power trio tour from early last winter/summer (hence the short Bears tour). The rythm section is brother/sister drummer/bass, Eric & Julie (something) who are School of Rock graduates that he met while playing with SOR a couple of years ago. Very intense, they play some of his solo work, King Crimson, and Bears. Adrian's latest solo work is out, Side Four, and includes newer versions of many of the songs he wrote for King Crimson.

I never knew he or the Bears were from your neck of the woods. I thought Chicago for some reason. Haven't heard the latest of his but Twang Bar King is my favorite. Killer version of The Beatles 'I'm Down' and 'The Rail Song' is one of the best "train" songs I've ever heard.

We've been discussing Sly and his come back, Jordan. How was he???

I heard the early show was a disaster -- he was only on stage for 3 songs. Thankfully I bought tickets for the second show. He was on stage for most of the show 70-90 minutes. His band was pretty solid -- including his niece, Lisa Stone, who did all the hesavy lifting on the vocal front -- she can sing!

They played about 10 songs -- all classics -- ranging from "Family Affair" to "Simple Song" to "Don't Call Me Whitey", to "Thank You". It wasn't very crowded which was great. He high fived many people in the crowd and we all sang along to every song.

One classic moment was when he was talking to us just after the BB King security people had just come around telling people that they couldn't take photos. He said, "and one more thing, that whole thing about not taking pictures -- take all the f-ing pictures you want."

He was far from completely coherent, but he was into it -- It was well worth the show (although every review I saw trashed the show -- no reviewers I saw were at the second set). Paul Schaeffer also sat in for the last song -- he can play too!

Thanks. Sounds better than I would have guessed. I recently edited down a ton of old Sly video footage. It was sad to watch him slowly lose it; but still came away lovin' the guy! He didn't just sing about love your brother, he lived it.

Another great show in 2007:
Joe Bonamassa

Yeah, he's great. He played with Walter Trout as an unannounced guest/performer at a Blues festival in Winter Park, CO in June of this year. Then Joe came out after sitting in with Walter and played a 45-min solo acoustic set. It was a real treat.

At the end, he threw the acoustic guitar to an audience member! I said to myself, "No, you did not just see him throw out the guitar. It had to be the guitar pick!"
I could barely believe my eyes. I thought I was hallucinating for a minute. :)

Morello is unreal. The sound that comes out of that 3 man band is insane. Never been anything close to unsatisfied with one of their shows.

As crazy as we all are about all things Jazzfest, I noticed a lack of fest shows on everybody's top show list. Is it because the sets are shorter and more crowded ,or just that our senses are overloaded by everything going on and we forget all the amazing music we/ve seen by the end of the day?

For me, yeah, the sets are generally short and just when the artist is in full swing, their time is up. I mean, say, Steely Dan's set was great, but not as great as a full show on their tour. It's only natural.

nope for me they're in their own special list....favorite fest shows....
Last year would have been (only at the fest itself)

The Allmans
Monk Boudreaux
The Stooges after the monsoon (favorite fest moment of all)

Those stand out the most for me right now....

If you include fest shows the Madison Bumblebees with Elder Baab or whatever their name was, Bobby Lounge, and Bingo! are near the top of my list, but I usually use fest shows to do one of three things:

See bands that aren't playing night shows,
Check out new bands that I might want to see at a night show,
Or see babds that I like, but don't like enough to give them a prescious night slot.

The Franti show at Hard Rock the night before was also great. I was checking out the insanity that was Infected Mushroom during the franti set at vegoose.

Thanks for the link. Robert Randolph always brings it. Totally agree on Morello and Rage.

Let me add this late addition to my shows, the wonderful and ageless Ian Hunter at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in the wilds of Brooklyn. Mott faves (All The Way To Memphis, All The Young Dudes, Sweet Angeline, Hymn For The Dudes, Saturday Gigs, Roll Away The Stone) solo hits (Once Bitten Twice Shy, Cleveland Rocks (with We Wish You A Merry Christmas thrown in) and his new stuff is wonderful.

The most amazing thing.....he is 68 years young.

And even better, he gets it. He donated a song off his new CD Shrunken Heads to the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund benefit CD that you can download here http://www.nomrf.org/Redefine829Download.html

It looks like a damn good record.

Wow...please tell me that Ian Hunter is not 68 years old! I feel old enough already.

I saw Mott the Hoople in 1974, as the headliner, at the King's College gym in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Nobody had heard of the opening band because they had just put out their first record...Queen.

Quite a show.

Scoop;
Saw Ian Hunter at Starland last July and couldn't agree more. Was a bit worried when he sat down for the first few songs but then it got into gear. But did not realize he was 68! He's earned the right to sit...for a bit!

Downloaded those nomrf songs a few weeks back; excellent collection of songs. Some of them kind hit me in the gut.

Memorable shows:
Souls of Nola mardi Gras Soiree at One Eyed Jacks (Anders, Papa Mali, CC Adcock, Kevin O'Day, Robert Mercurio, Rich Vogel, Monk)

Johnny Sketch & The Rainmakers during the monsoon at Fest.

Kirk Joseph at Fest

Blue Turtle Seduction @ Rodeo Bar

Crossroads Festival (seeing Mofro & Dirty Dozen in Wicker Park and then Bustle in the Hedgerow made for a great weekend in Chicago)

Kenny Wayne Shepard @ Gramercy w/ Hubert Sumlin & Bryan Lee

Union County Music Fest - 1st time I ever saw Chuck Berry; plus Smithereens, The Alarm, English Beat, Fountains of Wayne.

Soul Rebels in Central Park

Levon Helm @ Beacon with guest spots by Allen Toussaint and Dr John

Bonerama @ Ortliebs JazzHaus - tiny tiny place where Bert Cotton was relegated to the kids table. Even a fight in the audience; bartender yelled for everyone to raise their drink as he escorted them out the door.

Blind Boys/Dirty Dozen @ Kimmel Center. Hearing the Dozen in a venue with such impressive acoustics was a treat.
