This is part of the Christmas New Orleans Style put on by FQFI and referenced in Jenn's original post, but I thought the Cathedral Concert details deserved a separate post:

Cathedral Christmas Concerts

Local choirs and New Orleans artists herald in the season with nightly concerts of Christmas carols and gospel favorites in one of the country's most historic churches. The ecumenical celebration includes gospel choirs, jazz vocalists and ensembles, and more. It will make Christmas New Orleans Style one of your treasured holiday memories. All concerts are free, begin at 6pm, and take place in Jackson Square at St. Louis Cathedral- a New Orleans icon as well as the oldest continuously operating Roman Catholic cathedral in the country.

We went down to Fulton St. tonight for Marva Wright. They have the street blocked off with white Christmas trees, a canopy of twinking lights, white fleur fe Lis and random snowfalls. There is also a 12 ft. high gingerbread St. Louis cathedral in the lobby of Harrah's Hotel. It's really pretty. Anyway, here's a couple of pics:

So who's up for the City Park on Saturday night, Dec 1st? Maybe a bite to eat before hand? Suggestions... who else will be in town?

We'll be in NJ next weekend, mamaroux. The carousel looks better than it ever has, check it out.
Cute pics of y'all jamns and seefood!

If anyone is coming to town for Christmas and is looking for something special and unique, I would suggest the cruise to the bonfires on Christmas eve. In St. James Parish (about forty miles upriver from N.O.) the locals have a tradition of building fairly elaborate structures on the river levees and setting them afire on Christmas Eve to send a signal to Papa Noel not to pass over them in his sleigh. The fires are quite a sight on both banks from the river and there are some fireworks as well. The cruise is long and is mostly attended by tourists, but I had a wonderful time doing it. There is an open bar (had Abita Amber when we went!) and a buffet. You just hang out and check out the river and the fires, meet peeps from everywhere, eat, drink, carol and when it's all over and you get off of the boat, it's dark and quiet on Christmas Eve. If we were going to be in town this year, I'd go again, but we won't.

OMG, Winn!!! This sounds awesome!! I went to Gramercy for the bonfires ONCE (years ago). It was miserable; tons and tons of traffic, no place to park, nothing to eat or drink, no place to pee....I was sincerely pissed off at Papa Noel by the time I left.
We usually go to either Michigan (my aunt) or New Hampshire (David's parents) for Christmas. I just informed David that NEXT year, we are spending Christmas at home and we will definately do that cruise. Thanks for the link!!

Maybe we'll join you, Jenn. I went once to Gramercy by car on Christmas Eve, I think in '89. It was not user-friendly to me, either. I think that this is something the community does for itself, not really in an effort to draw attention from the outside world. Since then they have established a Bonfire Festival about two weeks before Christmas, but I have never gone as it seems we are too busy with holiday preparations, parties, Hanukkah, etc. The only info I could find on the festival is linked below:

Jenn, great pics! Loved the cathedral in gingerbread! I just got back from a weekend in Lake Louise volunteering for a World Cup race. Real snow....we got it! Come up and visit....

And a Calgary and Canadian skier won the downhill! Not easy to beat Austrians, but we're getting there, just in time for the 2010 Games in Vancouver.
