I used to love to hit that hood on a good night. Back in the early to mid 90's you had Jimmy's, Muddy Waters, and the Maple Leaf all within a two block radius. I'd go early and get stamped at all three places and just wander between them.

The friend I used to stay with lived on Dublin. We loved staying there within walking distance of Maple Leaf and Carrollton Station... not to mention all the restaurants, including Jacques Imo's and the Daquiri place down at the bend. :D

In the fifties and into the sixties, you didn't need to go downtown or out to Barkers in Jefferson. You had all the clothes stores and hardware stores, groceries at the HG Hill store, Arnaud's soda fountain, Stoutz Sporting Goods, a Royal Castle & Toddle House and everything else you needed right there ... and a K&B on the corner. During the '75 gas shortage the station on Oak at the RR tracks was the first place I ever paid over 50 cents a gallon, and I vowed I'd never pay that much again!!

====

And from at least the early 60's, Williams Plum Street Snowballs, which is one of two or three such stands that ought to be declared national treasures.

businesses now, and plenty of new ones....altho im not sure of the
gas prices at the station there.......frenchy the artists has his gallery there..
zotz is open 24 hours....oak st. cafe has charles farmer playing jazz piano for breakfast everyday.....theres a full service barber, several ladies salons,
hardware.....a new gelato/panini place....so many restaurants, and other stores...etc...i love that the levee bike/jogging trail is right there...
the 1st annual Po Boy fest is there this sunday.....noon-6....2 stages,
plenty of music, food,etc....a kids area, po boy juding ,etc..

Another nice thing:

If'n ya needs to get to Jefferson Parish, you can sneak right down Oak to get to River Road (Southport Hall is just off River Rd.)

It gets a little busy there during rush hour, but it's a great 'back door' into or out of New Orleans.

Yeah, it's still one of my favorite parts of town; but the street itself really needs attention, especially down by the River Road. I almost broke an axle last time I drove down there.

Which reminds me of a night I don't remember well in 1985. Coworker was leaving town the next day to go to a 3 month school in Houston. So we started the night out at Cooter Brown's. Mike parked his truck across the tracks next to the levee. When we left he said he could 4-wheel over the tracks. Got hung up on the second one. Called a wrecker; he was blocking half of Tchoupitoulas and pulling on the winch so hard Mike's truck was lifting a wheel off the ground, yet not moving. I figured out what was up, had the tow truck stop pulling, and reached under the truck to pull half the driveshaft out (and toss it in the back). Oh, and a train was coming.

Had the tow truck drop it that Shell? station at Carollton and St. Charles. Since we were cabbing it now it was time to really start drinking. Mike had a huge King Cake in the truck to take to Houston; since it wouldn't do well in the truck for a few weeks we brought it along in the cab. Munched as much as we could on the way to the Quarter, left the rest for the cabby. Then a long time at the Dungeon, breakfast at Molly's next door, Mike paused from his jambalya omellete to projectile vomit in the men's room, then came back to the table and finished it. Taxi back to the West Bank (daylight now), I was so wasted I couldn't get the door unlocked. Was content to sleep on the front porch, but Mike grabbed the keys--"dumbass, that's a Ford key!"

Poor guy still had to drive to Houston later that day.

Yeah u rite me too... Riverbend area has some good music joints.

Jimmys, Carrollton Station, Muddy Waters and Maple Leaf were a few weeks worth of great music in one night. Oh man I forgot some fond memories hanging off the railing upstairs at Muddy's during the Blacktop Blues-a-rama. Is Muddy Waters still sitting vacant? Last time I drove by some display racks were in there but didn't see plans to open anything up.

Don't tell anyone about Madigan's a few blocks over. First place I saw John Mooney play too many years ago. It is a nice neighborhood bar, don't tell dem tourists about it ;) also frequented the Louisiana Pizza Kitchen across the street. Sometimes you just need pizza, no matter where you are.

I have great memories of that area. In the 80s I lived above the fabric store on Oak. Like Moon, I'd get stamped at Jimmy's, Maple Leaf, but also Jed's on Oak and go between four bars (including Carrolton Station) all night. Anyone remember Jed Palmer who owned Jed's & F&M Pation bar on Tchoupitoulas? He was a nut and a half.

I think Jed's son may own that bar now, did it re-open after the thing? I don't remember the mid-summer thing, I think that's a fairly new thing. But, yeah, F&M & POC have to be the 2 best juke boxes in town.

I saw many a sunrise from the F&M. It seemed most good nights ended up with a breakfast/bloody Mary stop there before heading home. Caught a ride back to our hotel from there one morning with the bread man. It seems the Bayou Plaza was his next stop.

I remember being in F&M and it was just going off, standing room only, music blasting, 8 or 10 people dancing on top of a pool table with the ceiling tiles pushed out of the way to make room for their heads. Then I stepped outside and it was a Twilight Zone moment--bright sun, birds chirping, people going to church in their Sunday best.

I've got a strip of photos from that morning of 5 of us crammed in the photo booth.

Jimmy's was on Willow(I think)right across from Carollton Station and the streetcar barn. It had a huge presence during JF with great shows every night. Mostly rock and blues. I saw Michael Keaton in there one night and kept calling him Mr.Mom. Muddy Waters was around the corner up the block from the Leaf. It mostly featured locals and blues artists during JF. It got flooded and never re-opened. I don't know what lead to Jimmy's closing. perhaps locals can fill us in.

Gawd, how I loved Jimmy's! Jimmy Anselmo sold the club in 2000, but even for a few years before that, they had only occasional shows or special events, a mere shadow of it's former self. The last I heard of Jimmy, was Thanksgiving 2005, he hosted a show at Southport to remember all the clubs he had owned over the years as a benefit for Children's Hosp. (Coed's & Quasimodos are 2 other of his old clubs.)

If memory serves it was 8200 Willow. The phone number for the concert schedule message was (something)-8200. The voice (Jimmy?) is as stuck-in-my head as the guy in the cooler at the Fest gates.

Gotta love a bar that had a vending machine in the men's room with only two items--rubbers and rolling papers.
