I usually stay home but on saturday juana and i will head to clarksdale, MS for music. We'll hear some instores on the porch of cathead-terry harmonica bean, willie king-acoustic and tmodel ford. Nighttime to morgan freeman's club, ground zero, for little jimmy reed and willie king. Then across the road to red's juke joint for big jack johnson. Home on sunday, hopefully avoiding the drunken masses. For more on the delta, music and fests, see the thread in general music discussion. Happy New Year, yall!

A quiet one this year after the big party at my place last weekend. Gonna have 2 other couples over for a nice dinner, drinks and poker. No being on the streets for us either. Have fun everyone and Happy New Year!

Eileen and I will be spending our NYE like we have almost all of ours together. I'll be spinning discs for the Memphis Bop Club at a local hotel ballroom. We'll have a room, so she'll spend part of the time at the dance and part of the time exercising, swimming, and watching football. It actually works out pretty well for us. We spend the evening with nice people, I split the night with two other DJs but get a full check, and we manage to stay out of trouble.

We're going to a house party/jam session. One of the most memorable New Years Eve was 2 yrs ago we were part of the crew who throws the confetti off the buildings in Times Square.

Since Joe is usually playing on NY Eve, I go wherever he goes. We've made it a point to be together the first moment of every year, even if he is on stage and I'm in the audience.

For the first time in a long time, Joe isn't working this year. So we plan to set off some of those indoor fireworks at home (maybe we can time it for midnight!) after having a big ol' platter of cold shrimp and crab claws along with the champagne.

Happy New Years to you & Mr Joe. Look forward to seeing you at fest sweetie.

Thanks GG! I'm really hoping Joe can come with me to Fest this year and meet all of you great new Threadhead friends. It's been about 3 years, so he is way overdue!

Actually, I'm glad when he works NYE too. It gets me out on the town, often dolled up for one night of the year. There's always band wives/girlfriends to hang with.

Either way is great for me.

Yes, can't wait!!!
First, we're having dinnner @ a place called the Dee Felice Cafe. I know what my first course will be....Escargot! What about you, Ohio?

What's Threadhead Pattri gonna be wearing? I'm gonna go sorta "Dressy/messy".:)

The "Magic Bus" should be rolling up to your doorstep around 6 P.M. EST. Make sure you two get a nap after the Bengals/ Steelers game. I hope the Bengals stomp them, but the Steelers sure are a cheap and dirty team.

The Madison will be serving appetizers and providing us with "Party Favors". And a midnight-ish toast on the house.

Tasty blues by Delbert & Co... Can't wait!!!:D

I will be starting the day by coordinating our tailgate as we watch the Jets beat the Raiders to go into the playoffs. Game is at 1, so we will be setting up about 9 am. We start the tailgate up again after the game to celebrate and let the traffic dissipate. So, that means starting about 9 am and leaving there about 7 pm.....home, shower, regroup? I've been invited to a house party nearby...we shall see if I make it to midnight to welcome in the New Year!

I'll be spinning some 2006 favorites ( Ike Turner, Otis Rush, Allen & Elvis) on the BCBC, then slipping off to subvert the local First Night Jubilee (alcohol & drug free) where some of my favorite world class locals are playing by hitting the flask while walking between the churches that serve as venues!
Some magical music showcased in some beautiful classical churches, boogie-woogie and jazz under the stained glass embellished by a bit of smoke and cognac!

I think I'm staying in this year. They don't sell alcohol on Sundays here so the bars won't be open Sunday night so most of them are having their celebration tonight which I won't be going to cuz it's bad weather out. Think I'll just buy some fireworks and bring in the New Year with my chicklet tomorrow night. :)

That's what I said. Tuscaloosa County doesn't sell alcohol on Sundays. So no bar. A few are talking about opening at 12:01 Monday morning. They don't even have bars open on Superbowl Sunday. Imagine that.

I'm hoping that I can be in New Orleans on Superbowl Sunday, God willing. ;)

hey poker...don't they have "private club" licenses in Tideland? Here in Shelby, you can pay $1 and "join" a private club...same old bar any other day of the week, except on Sundays, they become "private clubs". That dollar gets you a membership, and that means dinking privilages. Biggest damn joke in the state to get around the laws.

Anyway, after this long holiday season, with all the travel and company...I think I'm going to the gym for 4 hours then zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz till Tuesday!

Hope all you TH's have a safe and wonderful New Years!

Don't know that there is a 'traditional' thing to do... 'cept eat, drink and be merry! Fireworks are illegal... All the cities put them on, but you can't do at home. In the good old days everyone in the street would bring out their Christmas trees and we'd have a big ol' bonfire, but you can't do that anymore either.

For now I'm a fan of tying sparklers to helium filled balloons and releasing them off our deck (which is on the side of a hill) but please don't tell my fireman brother or Chicagomike. I also have a klaxon (sp?) horn that I've held on to since my teens and bring out once a year at midnight. Oh, the neighbours love me!

grisgris
12-30-2006, 10:29 PM
Ok, sparklers tied to helium balloons sounds like a big no no here. We cook black eyed peas with hog jowls for good luck, greens, usually cabbage for foldin money, cornbread for gold coins & white rice for love for our our New Years food.

Same thing here, gris. I just bought my black-eyed peas, cabbage and hot wings today. I'm putting a hambone in the peas and I'm thinking about making some homemade buttermilk cornbread to go with it.

You don't have to contact anyone. Any regular food place that has a bar and normally sells booze during the week can get a private license. All you have to do is ask the server...they'll let you know. Again, though, I don't know if Tuscaloosa has that ability like Jefferson and Shelby.

This year I'll be in Vegas for the superbowl...the single busiest weekend of the year for Las Vegas every year. Bet I can buy a dink there on Sunday!

Here in Key West the town is as packed as it ever gets (Christmas to New Year's week), and they close off Duval St., the main drag. Downtown by Sloppy Joe's Bar at the busiest corner, there is a big pink conch shell that comes down at midnight, and the street is so jammed that it's not fun anymore. It's a task maneuvering a few yards. Further down Duval, in front of one of the gay bars (Bourbon St. Pub!), there is another New Year's Eve institution in Key West, which is getting more popular each year. A big red shoe comes down at the stroke of midnight, and inside it is one of the popular drag queen entertainers working the crowd into a frenzy. It's really a lot of fun. Like Bourbon Street, the straight crowd makes their way down Duval, and really gets an eyeful with this event, and most seem to like it....that's Key West! Like New Orleans, it has long had a mix of all kinds that get along pretty nicely. Always had a party atmosphere. The dropping of the shoe drew national attention when Anderson Cooper covered it for CNN two years ago. There's even another event in town which I haven't been to....a pirate wench (?) comes down at the waterfront in front of one of the other popular bars. Fireworks follows at midnight over the water on the Atlantic side of the island. Lots happening on this crazy little island tonight. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!

Stayin home and having people over -- made lamb pops (a trimmed rack marinated in white wine and grainy mustard) with turmeric new potatoes and spinach. It's the signature dish of the very famous (in Canada) Vij's in Vancouver. Got a nice white on the go....oh so yummy.
