NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Regional Transit Authority officials say in 19 days motorists should look out for streetcar traffic on Saint Charles Avenue from Canal Street to Napoleon Avenue.
RTA officials will throw a party to usher in the reopening of the line.
Pre-Katrina, the line popular with Uptown residents and tourists operated 24 hours a day. Its post-Katrina hours will be 5:27 a.m. until 11:55 p.m.
RTA spokeswoman Rosalind Blanco Cook says after the entire line is up and running, perhaps in the spring of 2008, the operating hours may be adjusted.
Of the seven RTA buses that have been operating on the St. Charles line, Cooke says only four will continue rolling. Other buses may be removed from the avenue as more improvements are made.
The return of service to about 3 miles of the 6.5-mile streetcar line means an end to paying parking fees for some Uptown residents who work in the Central Business District.

The further uptown and Carrollton parts of the St. Charles line, as I understand it, still have more electrical work to do. Napoleon may be the best available turnaround until they can get back to adding Carrollton. Streetcars are 1.25, and I think a transfer is still 25 cents.

Yeah! I'm temping on St. Charles and they've been test-running a lot of streetcars (and new drivers) on the line up to Napolean . . . and today (now that the St. Charles River waters have dissapated from yesterday - sheesh), they mowed and weed-wacked all of the neutral ground and tracks along that part of the line! :D

One of my favorite midday NOLA rituals is to ride the St. Charles streetcar from Canal Street down to the Riverbend for beers at Cooter Brown's and back. See the sights, feel the breeze blowing through the open car, and on the return, randomly jump on and off visiting other watering holes.
This is good news!

If an aggressive plan being pursued by the Regional Transit Authority succeeds -- and the odds are it will -- tourists and residents may get an unexpected Christmas gift. They'll be able to ride the streetcar the entire length of St. Charles Avenue.
Fred Basha, the RTA's director of infrastructure, said Thursday that he's convinced the streetcar line's Calliope Street substation can generate enough power to move historic, green Perley Thomas cars all the way from downtown to South Carrollton Avenue. At the moment, service ends at Napoleon Avenue, about half way along the St. Charles route.
If the RTA can overcome three other obstacles, and he believes the agency can, street service along the length of the avenue could resume before Christmas Eve, Basha said.
The obstacles: The RTA has to have workers paint the poles that support the electrified system of overhead wires, which rainy weather could delay. Operators who were laid off after Hurricane Katrina shut down the system have to be re-hired. And the state has to certify that the portion of the line between Napoleon and Carrollton is safe to use.
