I know nothing about pump capacites, just wondering if this seems like
an adequate system?

"We had everything operating at full capacity," said Robert Jackson, spokesman for the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board.

But in some areas, more than two inches of rain fell in an hour, while the city's pumps can handle only a maximum 1 inch in the first hour of a rainfall and 1/2 inch every hour thereafter, he said.

Interesting. My oldest wrote a 5 page paper for his Government class last week on the cause and effect of the damage from the storm. I was very glad he chose to write on this, MRGO and the seemingly absence of natural mitigation efforts. He was taken aback by this as well.

MAAAAAAN--that was some rough driving! I'm not used to them Looeeeziana downpours. NYC GAL got a serious lesson yestiddy in NOLA. It was certainly a little creepy glancing down sidestreets and seeing them totally flooded...

Pumping capacity is probably still impeded by the narrowing of the canals due to breech repairs and the need to relocate and modernize some of the pump stations, as well.
I recently re-read "The Storm," Ivor Van Heerden's expose of the levee failures and the floods related to K******. Got a lot more out of it this time now that a bit of time has passed and the anger has cooled. Lots of good information in there about MR GO, the loss of wetlands and its effects on all of south Louisianna. This book is definitely worth another look as time passes and the Corps tries to go back to its old way of doing things. Probably something to put the new governor on the spot for, too, since K****** wasn't the big one, or even close to it.

Yeah, I find it hard to read that book (and other excellent ones about Katrina and the aftermath) because I just get so upset!

It took me quite some time to get through my first read of Brinkley's book The Great Deluge because of all the missed signs and opportunities that he showed were ignored.

Yup, that's another one I haven't been able to read yet . . . it'll just take a bit more time and distance I think.
