From the article it seems that he carried a NOLA personality of enjoying life.

He was our kind of guy. He thought he had NO chance of playing in the game, so he went out and got totally wrecked the night before. Of course, Boyd Dowler got hurt, and Max had to borrow a helmet to go in.
