View Full Version : J & M Music shirts to support NOMC
The Krewe of Chew

A new charitable project from the Krewe of Chew! We are selling J & M Music shirts to benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic.
Here's how it started:
It was the Wednesday in between (the day of the Ponderosa Stomp) and we were walking down Rampart Street on the way to Rosetree's. Dave was wearing his Memphis Recording Service t-shirt, and Cindy was wearing her Norman Petty Recording studio t-shirt. We passed the former location of J & M Music (Cosimo Matassa's studio). We discussed the fact that you can buy Sun, Stax, Motown, Chess t-shirts, etc. but that you can't buy a J & M shirt. Too bad, we'd love to have one. At Rosetree's, StaxSun commented on our shirts, and we thought other people might like to have one too. We were so impressed by the charitable work that Threadhead nation did this year. Could we make the shirts ourselves to raise some money for our favorite city?
It's taken some months, but we are finally ready to go. We spoke to Cosimo Matassa, and he gave us permission, and he chose the New Orleans Musicians Clinic as the charity. All profits from the shirts will go to NOMC!
We don't have the finished screen yet, and will post a picture when it is ready, but the design will look something like this: The "J & M Music Shop" logo from Rampart Street, surrounded by the words "Cosimo Matassa's Recording Studio". Underneath that it will say "New Orleans' home of R & B" and "Birthplace of rock & roll". We hope to have a back print listing many of the artists who recorded there.
If all costs are what we think, men's shirts will be $16, or 2 for $30. Women's fitted t-shirts will probably be $18.
So, we are taking a poll of the Threadheads before we place the order for the first run of shirts:
Who's intersted in buying a shirt? (we're not taking orders yet!)
What size would you want? (men's small, medium, large, XL? XXL will cost more. Women's small, medium, large, XL?)
Would you prefer a black shirt or a white shirt (because we haven't decided on that yet)
Let us know!
Red Beans & Ricely Yours,
Cindy & Dave

I think it's a great idea. Like everyone else, I favor a dark color. The only place I ever seem to wear a white shirt is at fest on the really hot days. I can wear XL, but often I buy XXL for the roominess factor. I'm sure I'll take a couple, and maybe I can drum up more business among my music geek buddies.

We're glad you all are interested! Can you please give us your size preference? Since we've never made t-shirts before, we don't know what percentage to do of each size!
Thanks,

And a large women's should do me...bound to be others in my nexk of the woods who may be interested as well. Will there be a separate website or email address for others to inquire or place orders?

I don't know how big you want to go with this but you could inquire about the chances that LMF might carry 'em. I would think it would be right up their alley.

Please. Two requests. Make them in 100% cotton, and have them available in XXXL as I'm a fa...I mean "calorie enhanced" person

Men's medium or large for me. I like dark colors but it would depend on the colors in the logo, lettering etc.
Since i'm always a raffle minded type guy, perhaps since you are in contact with Cosimo, you could propose and maybe get his help in having one autographed by the man and as many of the artists who recorded there as possible and then donating it to the raffle, since those proceeds go to NOMC as well.

I agree with the pre-shrunk, 100% cotton, preferably a Hanes "Beefy T" or other heavy weight shirt. Conventional wisdom when ordering t-shirts for resale is 1-2-2-1 as in 1 doz. XX, 2 doz. XL, 2 doz. L and 1 doz. medium or 2-2-1-1 depending on the target demo. Things like smalls and XXX are best ordered in half doz. lots or by the piece if the vendor will do that. Personally, I've never found the "women's," "fitted," and tank tops to be big sellers, but it may be different down south. You might want to consider a long sleeve or a 3/4 sleeve as they are popular with the "age enhanced" crowd.

I vote for black and the women's in med/large (if it's a "babydoll" cut). :D

Thanks for all your responses!
In answer to some of your questions:
We will have the shirt available on the website for Cindy's store, and orders can be e-mailed through there. We will have more information on this when the shirts are ready to be ordered.
The J & M logo that we're using is a kind of brick color, and we'll be trying to use lettering that matches it. We will post the design when it is done.
We already thought about the raffle and LMF! We have lots of ideas to promote this and people to contact, but your suggestions are welcome!

Thanks to everyone who answered our poll! If you weren't keeping track, black or white shirt preferences ended up tied, so we will try to do both if we can. We also now have a better idea of what sizes to order (a lot of requests for xl and xxl!).
We will post a new thread and picture in a few weeks when the shirts are ready to be ordered.

I'll be needing one of the larger sizes myself. Either XXL or XXXL depending, not on my girth of course, but the cut of the shirt.

They will definitely be ready before Jazzfest! We are hoping to have them by the end of November. At latest, by the beginning of December (just in time for your holiday shopping!)
We will try to get some XXXL. They will probably cost a bit more per shirt. We will know more in a couple of weeks, once we meet with the t-shirt printer.

T-shirt update:
The shirts have been ordered. There will be both black and white available. Men's regular sizes will cost $16 or 2 for $30, with XXL and XXXL costing $18. Women's shirts will be $18; we are trying to get XXL which should be $20. We think the design looks great: white design on black shirt, black and red on a white shirt. We should have the shirts around Thanksgiving, and a link to the pictures and ordering info then.

Just in time for a x-mas gift for myself. The black in a XXL will be ordered when you are ready.
There must be a way to get the word out about this good cause. I was thinking when you are ready, I could contact a local radio station (wluw) that host the NEW ORLEANS MUSIC HOUR with order info.
If you are a fan of NO and familiar with the history, who wouldn't want a shirt like that.
