One of the many e-lists I'm on posted this message today. Primarily Afro-centric they are supporting this guy for Governor. I haven't seen anything on this board in months about that race, so I thought I'd throw it out and see what flies? What are the locals on the board thinking?

Dear Fellow Louisianans,
As we near the primary election I am both heartened by the momentum of support our positive campaign is gaining and saddened that one of my opponents has decided to make this race negative.
Last week, Bobby Jindal unveiled attack ads, making blatantly false statements about my record, and revealing himself to be a hypocrite - a word I never thought I'd have to apply to him. In the TV commercial Bobby is using to attack me, he says that I made the bulk of my wealth in gambling. That is not true. I have worked very hard to build my family grocery business from 60 employees to 600, and have expanded my business holdings to tugboats, concrete and real estate. For several years I owned a company that distributed video poker machines, but according to my own tax returns and as reported in The Baton Rouge Advocate last weekend, this business accounted for less than 9 percent of my income!
In the meantime, just a brief glance at Bobby's campaign finance reports show he has accepted tens of thousands of dollars from video poker interests and from lobbyists who represent casinos. The Advocate also reported last week that Bobby took $50,000 in one day from executives of a Colorado company trying to put a toxic landfill in our state!
Only today, the Advocate reported that Bobby may not appear at Thursday night's debate, which will be televised statewide, because he is needed in Washington to vote on an important issue. My question to Bobby is, why start now? His attendance record in Congress has been horrible and he has missed key votes on a number of important issues -- in fact, in Congress he is ranked 7th overall in missed votes and 432 out of 435 in effectiveness. There are only two statewide televised debates planned, and now Bobby is trying to duck the last one. In business, if an applicant doesn't show up for the interview, the applicant doesn't get a job. In public service, no elected official should run and hide from his or her constituents or opponents. If necessary, I'll fly to Washington to debate Bobby. The citizens deserve to hear from their candidates. Besides, I'm anxious to ask him in person why he is lying about me.
While listening to these lies told about me around the state, my campaign has continued to grow stronger. In the last few weeks we've picked up a number of important endorsements from clergy, educators, law enforcement and legislative leaders from around the state, which are listed below. On Monday, the New Orleans Tribune, a 141-year-old newspaper, gave me their endorsement, too. I've barely been able to keep up with the travel demands to meet the officials and community leaders who are stepping up and embracing our message of change - and our message that we need a truly independent governor without obligations to big-money interests or political party bosses. It is astonishing the amount of support we're receiving as we surge in this final week.
The primary campaign is almost over and I am increasingly confident of a place in the runoff. I'm looking forward to comparing our records - mine in public service, church leadership, education, volunteerism, and business, and his "career" in government service. (I'm still wondering how he has managed to become a multimillionaire while never holding the same job for more than three years and working for only one year outside of the public sphere.) To restore national confidence in Louisiana, we must do everything possible to rid our state of the "pay to play" mentality that has haunted us for so long. As Governor, I will stand up for the truth just as I have done this week.
If you have any questions about any ads that are running this week, please go to my website, www.georgesforgovernor.com (http://www.georgesforgovernor.com) or email me at askjohn@georgesforgovernor.com. As I say in one of my latest ads, a real leader doesn't hide, and I will not hide from answering the toughest questions.
Let's elect an independent leader who can unite this state. Vote for me, John Georges No. 7, on October 20.
Thank you,
John D. Georges

Apparently, C. Ray supports John Georges (who was a business associate of his) for Gov . . . and that's enough for me as a newly minted resident down here to NOT also support him.

But, I am a newbie - what do the other, more experienced NOLA locals think??

Bobby had me at "hello"
After Katrina, he hit the ground running. His was the only voice of reason that I heard. I said then that if/when he ran, I would back him.

I don't believe Mark is right about Jindal. I think he played careful politics with a goal of straddling the line between his national Republican loyalties and his constituents. He let Mary Landrieu and Richard Baker take the lead on recovery issues, happy to claim credit for their occasional successes and avoid blame for their failures.

As far as issues like medical ethics, stem cell research, etc., Jindal is perfectly willing to take options away from doctors, patients, families, and researchers. And I'm afraid we're stuck with that.

Idiots In Louisiana would not know a good candidate if he walked up and bit them. Understandable since they have little experience with having any of them. Bend over for another round y'all.

Oh we have good candidates all the time. Great, in fact. They just never turn into good incumbents.

I have to agree somewhat with atpontchartrain. I feel like Jindal skates over everything. He says things that should be done, which always sounds good, but he never says if or how he plans to do it. He did maybe do some good after Katrina, but frankly, he gives me the creeps big time. For example, in one of his current tv ads he goes on and on about how being a father made him think differently about healthcare and how everyone should have access to quality healthcare. Wow!!! There's a freakin' no-brainer! Now how exactly he plans to do that is a mystery because he never says anything & he doesn't show up for debates.

Also, I have heard through the grapevine that John Georges is radically religious - even more so than Bobby Jindal, who doesn't hide the fact. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, it's just odd that nothing about that has come out at all. Whether or not it's true, I'm not really sure. Just an interesting aside.

I normally stay out of these political debates and everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions. I wouldn't pass judgment on anyone based on who they decide to vote for. Everyone needs to vote for who they think will be the best leader, which is usually picking the lesser of the evils, in my opinion. At this point, I personally haven't decided.

This made me laugh out loud last night -- anyone else watching Kid Nation? It's actually a pretty good show. Anyway, they had elections, and one little 11 year old girlfriend of the incumbent "town council" person remarked of her friends' opponent "yeah, he's smart and could put all the presidents in order, but you don't have to be smart to be a leader -- George Bush is not smart at all and he's been our president twice!"

I missed it this week, but have seen it twice and both times been reduced to tears. :o Last week, the lone Jewish kid singing his prayer at their multi-faith church service put me over the edge. Originally, the ads for this show had me thinking that it would worthless, but it can be moving (for me apparently). :)

I'm really impressed with those kids. It's cold, they've had snow, they're sleeping without heat in sleeping bags, doing everything for themselves, cooking, cleaning, and mostly getting along and helping each other. They're behaving so much better than adults in reality shows!

Yeah ! Go on Mitch. He's doing a great job and we like the job he's doing. I don't think he will have any problems, prolly re-elected on Saturday.

From the T-P jast week:

EDITORIAL: Lieutenant governor: Landrieu
Monday, October 08, 2007
The lieutenant governor would have to step in if the governor becomes unable to serve. But on an ordinary basis, the office's most important job is to oversee the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism.

That has become an essential function since the 2005 hurricanes dealt a major setback to the state's tourism industry. Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu responded with energy and creativity to help bring the industry back.

Mr. Landrieu has a keen understanding of the vital nexus between tourism and economic development in our state. He convinced legislators to invest in nationwide efforts to promote Louisiana after the storms and was instrumental in securing emergency state funding for some of New Orleans' top events, including Carnival, Jazzfest and Essence Festival.

He also demonstrated grace under pressure after the storms, overseeeing efforts to transform state museums into temporary emergency shelters and quickly tapping national expertise to forge a strategy to recover the state's tourism sector.

Mr. Landrieu will remain a tireless ambassador for Louisiana. He pledges to keep up efforts to bring back conventions, expand the cruise ship industry's presence in New Orleans, continue the tourism industry's recovery and enhance the state's cultural offerings.

Louisiana's recovery will continue to present the lieutenant governor with many challenges. But Mr. Landrieu has distinguished himself as an enterprising and capable leader. He has an innate political sense and a firm, reassuring manner. He will continue to serve our state well in another term as lieutenant governor.

//

Maybe, one day, the citizens of New Orleans will get another chance to vote for him as Mayor. I doubt it though, he will move beyond these things, I think.

And how now, the Guv race. But not now, I need a dinks and Thursday night attitude adjustment :)

And Zkit, have you got your LA driver license yet? Automatic voter registration. Well, hell, vote anyway. And vote often. It's the Louisiana way ;)

Yes, that, or he could just be representing the voters that elected him. And these and other voters will most likely elect him Governor. Not sure how I'll vote Saturday, I'm in the big 1/3 that has not decided yet. But my vote won't be anything that has to do with Bush or national politics. We're looking out for our own because that's all we got...

I am a big defender of voting as your constituents expect. I just don't have much faith that it happens. Unless, of course, your constituents are big donors.

Welcome to our somewhat unique "open primary" system here in LA - all the candidates from all parties (and the independents too) run in the same primary - and if nobody gets 50% plus 1 vote, the top two go to a runoff - regardless of party affiliation. So you could theoretically get 2 dems or 2 repubs in a runoff for the same office. But if Bobby J. (for example) gets more than 50% in the primary, he's in without a runoff.

The system takes a little getting used to.

We had that system out here in Cali and them it went away. It really is a better system if you don't believe in a 2 party country.

As far as I can tell, it is the only way to vote for who you think is the best candidate not just the best candidate of your party.

LMAO. I've always wondered how Cali could elect a governor born in Austria, or NY could elect a senator born in Illinois. I can promise that ain't gonna happen here.

Tonight, analyists say it will be Jindal, no runoff. Undecided is down to 20%, none of the challengers combinded look good enough to get above 50%.

I'll say a thang about Jindal. He's done more in state service than all the other candidates combined. He turned state health care upside down and inside out (at age 24), and when he left it, it was out of the red and into black numbers. He has spent all his life here, except for his time at Harvard and Oxford. And D.C. too, if you consider that time spent...

The big political question is how he will confront the Good Ole Boy networks. It will be worth watching ;)

Boasso recently picked up an African American endorsement from the mayor of Shreveport - Alexandria's mayor also endorses him

Campbell's idea of eliminating the state income tax is fabulous - however his means of replacing that revenue by taxing oil and gas probably won't come to fruition

Georges has no political experience but has business experience - rumor has it he is a very difficult man to work for

those are the anybody-but-Jindal candidates - Jindal is too ultra conservative, always co-mingling God and politics, and supports the Louisiana Family Forum http://lafamilyforum.org/ an ultraconservative faction trying to incoporate its policy (creationism in schools for example) into state government - Vitter was just called on the carpet for earmarking $100,000 towards this organization for incorporating "alternatives" to science education in state schools.

http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/frontpage/index.ssf?/base/news-9/1192776477212740.xml&coll=1

Plus there are alot of questions about who is bankrolling Jindal's campaign chest, with a recent $50,000 contribution from a Clorado company looking to open a toxic waste dump site near Baton Rouge

http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/10518102.html

I fear that if Jindal wins, and if a Democrat is elected for president next year, Louisiana will have a very tough road ahead in Louisiana

from a Louisiana blog, here are 37 reasons NOT to vote for Jindal

1. Bobby Jindal has accepted thousands of dollars in donations from Rep. Tom DeLay and Rep. Jerry Lewis. Jindal accepted $5,000 from DeLay’s ARMPAC and $12,000 from PACs associated with Lewis.

2. Bobby Jindal has accepted $6,000 from Tony Rudy and the Chitimancha Tribe of Louisiana, both of whom were clients of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

3. In 2005, Bobby Jindal voted with President Bush 90% of the time and with the Republican Party 97% of the time, according to Congressional Quarterly.

4. Rep. Roy Blunt, considered by C.R.E.W. to be one of the “most corrupt members of Congress,” gave Bobby Jindal nearly $6,000 through his political action committees (opensecrets.org).

5. In 2005, Bobby Jindal voted against the creation of a bipartisan ethics taskforce. (HR 213, Vote 106, April 14, 2005).

6. Bobby Jindal voted against HRS 5, Vote 5 on January 5, 2005, which would have closed the “revolving door” between lobbyists and lawmakers seeking private sector job deals based on their committee assignments.

7. Bobby Jindal refused to call for the resignation of disgraced Attorney General (and Rice graduate!) Alberto Gonzales.

8. Bobby Jindal voted to make 14 of the 16 “key provisions” of the USA Patriot Act “permanent.” (HR 3199, Vote 414, July 21, 2005).

9. Bobby Jindal voted against re-establishing FEMA as separate from the Department of Homeland Security (HR 2360, Vote 497, September 28, 2005), and Jindal skipped a crucial committee hearing on FEMA Hurricane Preparations in 2007.

10. On August 29, 2005, Bobby Jindal called FEMA’s coordination with the State “tremendous” during an interview on CNN.

11. Bobby Jindal skipped a critical vote that would have established an independent probe to investigate the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina (HRES 437, Vote 471, September 15, 2005).

12. Bobby Jindal voted against a $3 billion hurricane aid package for Louisiana (HR 1591, Vote 265, April 25, 2007).

13. Bobby Jindal opposed Emergency Appropriations for Louisiana hurricane recovery (HR 1591, Vote 186, March 23, 2007).

14. Bobby Jindal introduced legislation that would have allowed private insurers to create tax-free funds for claims related to a natural disaster (H.R. 164, March 27, 2007).

15. Bobby Jindal attempted to ban “certain people” from returning to public housing in New Orleans, even though his motion was simply a recapitulation of preexisting law.

16. Bobby Jindal quoted Martin Luther King, Jr in order to justify his opposition to affirmative action. In 2003, Jindal told The Times-Picayune, “I oppose set-asides and quotas. An insightful man got it right 40 years ago: people should not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Jindal also misused a Martin Luther King quotation in order to claim that those protesting in support of the Jena Six were “outside agitators.”

17. Bobby Jindal believes in teaching creationism and/or “intelligent design” in the classroom.

18. In September 2003, Bobby Jindal told The Times-Picayune that he was “100 percent pro-life with no exceptions.”

19. Bobby Jindal has attempted to take credit for Mary Landrieu’s bill that opened up 8 million square miles for exploration, giving Louisiana 37.5% of the tax revenue, despite the fact that Jindal had actually worked to defeat this bill.

20. Bobby Jindal voted against appropriating $14 billion for the research and development of alternative energy (HR 6, Vote 40, January 18, 2007).

21. Bobby Jindal supports Social Security privatization.

22. Bobby Jindal voted against allowing Medicare to negotiate on prescription drug prices (HR 4, Vote 23, January 12, 2007).

Voting seemed light in my precinct, but that is usual in my neighborhood for primaries. Took me about 3 minutes in line, I was in and out in about 10 minutes.

I voted for Boasso, even though he's a DINO. He did a respectable job in the debates Thursday night, and I loved his hairdo. I wish we had more Demos running, but that LA politics now, I guess, red and getting redder. Just an aside, I wouldn't vote for Campbell for dog catcher. He's everything that's wrong with our state, wrapped into one fat package. But that's just my opinion. I guess I'm tired of seeing his face on TV and his name on on every damn ballot, for many years now.
Can't believe the number of repubs I voted for today, had to have been a record for me, but the choices were limited.

As for those 37 reasons, swampwoman. About 25 of those are reasons are reasons the folks will be electing Jindal. For good or ill, it's the will.

and we shall see what the will of the people will be tonight - 29% undecideds should make for interesting election returns for sure...

It was a no-brainer for me! Anything to help police and firemen. We don't pay those folks near enough to do work that is so important to us.
