Tuesday, October 16, 7pm:
Tommy Sancton's New Orleans Allstars and
Dr. Michael White's Liberty Brass Band

Wednesday, October 17, 7pm:
Soul Rebels Brass Band
and the Professors of Pleasure

The Newcomb Department of Music at Tulane University will host two
nights of live jazz at Dixon Hall on October 16th and 17th, featuring
Tommy Sancton, Michael White, the Soul Rebels Brass Band, and Tulane's
own group the Professors of Pleasure. The performances underscore the
University's role in nurturing jazz and local culture, which includes
a burgeoning Jazz Studies program in the Music Department.

The mini-concert series will highlight connections between the
traditional and modern sounds of jazz and brass band music, as
presented by local musicians who are committed to higher education.
Clarinetist Tommy Sancton is the visiting Mellon Professor at Tulane
and author of several books, including Song for My Fathers, a memoir
of his mentorship by jazz masters at Preservation Hall. Sancton's
group, the New Orleans Allstars, will perform traditional jazz. Dr.
Michael White, a professor at Xavier University, has updated and
experimented with the tradition as the clarinetist and bandleader of
the Liberty Brass Band. Members of the Soul Rebels Brass Band came up
through the city's proud marching band tradition and continued their
music studies at Xavier, Southern University, and elsewhere. Soul
Rebels extend the boundaries of brass band music by integrating funk,
hip-hop, and Caribbean styles.

The Professors of Pleasure is made-up of Music Tutors at Tulane: John
Doheny (sax), Jesse McBride (piano), Kevin O'Day (drums), Jim Markway
(bass), and John Dobry (guitar). Together, these instructors form the
centerpiece of the Department of Music's strengthened Jazz Studies
program, which includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Studies and a
Masters of Musicology with an emphasis on New Orleans music.

Assistant Professor Matt Sakakeeny, who teaches the social history of
New Orleans music, will emcee the concerts. Bruce Raeburn, the Curator
of the Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane, will provide commentary.
