About the Po-Boy Preservation Festival

Hosted by the Oak Street Association, the New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival was founded as a celebration of the storied sandwich and the role it has played in New Orleans' culinary culture.

"There's a whole generation of young people out there who have grown up thinking Jared is the expert when it comes to making sandwiches" said Brad Wilkins, President of the Oak Street Main St. Association "But a po-boy is more than just a sandwich, it's a part of our collective past."

The collective past of which he speaks is the historic streetcar driver strike that crippled New Orleans in 1929.

History has it that a local shop owner who was formerly a streetcar driver began feeding the striking the workers for free. When a hungry worker would come in off of the picket line the call would go out: "here comes another poor boy!"

From those humble beginnings spring the many varieties of the po-boy sandwich; a New Orleans original of which there is no sub-stitute!

The Po-Boy Preservation Festival will also highlight the ongoing revitalization of the Oak Street corridor.

In 2006, Oak Street was designated a National Main StreetTM by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and a Louisiana Main StreetTM by the Department of Historic Preservation which authorizes the program. The Main StreetTM program, that has been in existence since 1985 has been successfully revitalizing local neighborhood commercial corridors that have suffered from large scale malls and big box stores in the suburbs.

As a not for profit 501 C 3 organization the program has been raising funds through events, grants and corporate sponsorships. As a result new businesses have been popping back up on Oak Street and longtime shops have been given the chance to revitalize their existing businesses as well as freshen up and revamp their store fronts. The Main Street initiative has been steadily gaining steam, and Oak Street has seen a slew of activity as a result of the programs success.

Proceeds from the New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival will go towards the Oak Street Association's work to promote, preserve, and revitalize Carrollton's historic Oak Street neighborhood and commercial corridor.

A portion of proceeds from the festival will go to support the Abeona House Child Discovery Center. Abeona's purpose is to support families through high quality childcare for their young children by fostering a sense of community, and respect for the capactiy of children, their teachers and parents.Located in the Riverbend area on Oak Street, Abeona House is a full time, year-round, not for-profit child care center. They serve children ranging in age from 6 weeks to 5 years.

I have to start out by saying that I love my wife and children very much, but it is events like these that make me sometimes miss my previous life where I would jump on a plane and go without thinking about it. Oh, yeah, Sha would probably go too.

Lived in Westchester my whole life (except for a brief 2 year stint in Hoboken). Briarcliff Manor for the last 4 and 7 years in Millwood before that, so I am very familiar with the area.

PGF was solid. Not the best I've seen them, but fun and funky. I think they were in a hurry (understandable) to get out and hit the road - it was an 11pm start (very late for Dallas), they stopped at 12:30, no encore, lights on and house music playing before they'd even gotten backstage.

I was there for the Iguanas and PGF. Iguanas were solid, but PGF rocked. John and June were definitely into the hometown gig. Bigger crowds than the organizers expected, I'm sure, with blocks-long lines for food. Actually, the beer lines were way shorter than the food lines. They have some logistical things to fix next year, but all-in-all, a great little festival that hopefully will become an annual fixture on Oak Street.

Look at the 2008 calendar before you make the changes. Halloween is on a Friday night next year. Look at the dates for VooDoo, etc. I know that a couple of the festivals that I do are moving back a week because the first Friday is not until the 7th. ;)

I'm not against it, I just want to let you look at different options!;)
The PoBoy Fest does sound good! They need to have it at a different venue or extend it. From what I saw and heard, if they double next year, they are going to have big congestion/circulation problems. They have to keep it on Oak Street because it is a Main Street event, but they are going to have to lengthen it or use side streets. There's nothing worse than not being able to move in a crowd and waiting an hour for a po-boy!

good point R.....
they are definitely planning to extend it next year...oak is a fairly long
street, so its easy to to extend it as many blocks as necessary...
it was the first year, so they had no way of knowing how many
people will attend....for the first year the attendance was amazing,
especially considering the forecast was for rain all day...
and a Carrolton st. neighbor won the best po boy contest...sweet...
Ye Olde College Inn....member with a dinner at Ye Olde you get
admission to rock n bowl...at least they were doing it last year...

This first po-boy fest did not happen to be very useful for actually eating po-boys or getting around from one end of the Oak business district to the other. The layout coupled with the big crowds didn't work. However, there is an old rule of thumb, always call a first meeting of a new group in a room that's too small. They followed that rule well, so now they probably can figure out rule two ... whatever it is! Mrs. AtP and I would go back en duo, but wouldn't expect a larger group or people with baby carriers, wheelchairs, etc., to be able to enjoy it until they were assured that there was a workable redesign.

It was a lot of fun and the music was kickass (Woo hoo, Iguanas and PGF!!!) . . . but ironically I didn't actually get to eat any Po-Boys at their Preservation Festival, due to the over-crowding and LOOOOOOOONG lines, I also wasn't able to buy a t-shirt (they ran out early). But, as stated here above - it was their inaugural event and I'm sure there were a lot of lessons learned to make next year's better (and easier for the attendees to enjoy).

At the least, I would indeed hope that they expand their geography next year to allow more room to walk and see things - maybe putting one group of vendors on the side streets and having the food/drink a bit closer to the stages could be helpful . . .

I did enjoy some yummy eats at Cooter Brown's afterwards though! :D

The layout was too tight, but the vibe on Oak St. was great. It would be nice if it could be expanded into the neighborhood or possibly on the neutral ground on Carrollton Ave. The food really needed to be spread out and the lines were slow and crowded on top of each other. It was almost as bad as MG for that one block. We ended up at Mother's to get our fix and it was fun. I did manage to get one of those t-shirts before they sold out and it will be donated to the threadhead Musician's Clinic raffle. I did get a poster to keep.

The Po-boy fest has potential for greatness!!

I did manage to get one of those t-shirts before they sold out and it will be donated to the threadhead Musician's Clinic raffle. I did get a poster to keep.

The Po-boy fest has potential for greatness!!

FYI, Voodoo is October 24-26, 2008.

ey Wynn....hope you and the family had a great thanksgiving....
I spoke to a few of the Okies, and they said they were definitely going to
expand the layout for PoBoy next year....food vendors will be increased,
and placed on the side streets....and an additional few blocks will
be added....i doubt the carrolton st. neutral ground will be used since
by next year plans are the street car will be running...

We did have a tasty turkey day, PF. It was even tastier than usual thanks to Funkk's pecan pie secrets which made ms windowman's pies even better than before!! Thanks, Vicky. BTW, that "insider info" came in an email from Voodoo on 10/31 thanking attendees. Anyone who signed up on their e-list got the same. Ya'll will just have to move here to not miss all of the festing in these parts:)

Hadn't noticed...Oh well, now I won't have to have the "am I going to Crawfish Fest?" debate with myself. ;)

We have a similar problem, a good friends son is being Bar Mitzvah that Saturday. We're thinking ceremony and book to CFF after. Kid doesn't need or want us there at the party.
At least thats what we're hoping to do.

Unfortunately for us, the wedding is in Hilton Head - that makes booking it over to CFF a little more difficult!!!

from this week's Gambit:

Rich in Po-Boys

Planning for the second annual New Orleans Po-Boy Festival (www.poboyfest.com) is already underway, and one of the festival's organizers also is distributing a guide to po-boy shops complete with a $1 discount coupon at participating vendors. Rather than attempt to list the hundreds of local po-boy purveyors, the Idea Village Po-Boy Initiative uses a flyer to showcase a diverse mix of nine restaurants spread out across the city: Banh Mi Sao Mai (a Vietnamese shop), Jazzy's Po-Boys , Johnny's Po-Boys , Liuzza's by the Track , Magazine Po-Boys , Mike Serio's , Parasol's Restaurant , Poppa's Seafood and Stewart's Diner . The initiative is the work of two nonprofits, the Idea Village (www.ideavillage.org) and Stay Local (www.staylocal.org) , which both see the po-boy as a vehicle for local economic development. Flyers are available at participating shops or online at www.staylocal.org/biz/guides.
